Hong Kong's South China Morning Post wins 9 photo, video awards
Post photographers picked up eight prizes across four categories in the Focus at the Frontline 2024 contest.
Sam Tsang's shot of a construction worker's clothing catching fire after an accident in Kwun Tong won the Breaking News category, while Elson Li's image of swimmers in the Triathlon World Cup diving into Victoria Harbour was awarded the top prize in Sports. Post photographers Eugene Lee and Dickson Lee were also honoured in the Nature and Environment, and Portrait categories.
The results of the association's Video at the Frontline annual news and documentary video competition were also announced on Monday, with the Post picking up the top prize.
The judges said the winning entry by senior video producer Bryan Wood, titled 'Domestic 'helpers' battle two-week rule to stay in Hong Kong', showed 'good journalist sense'.
They added: 'With the unique characters, strong visuals, and an effective use of animation, it tells the story of Hong Kong's neglected voices in a very complete manner.'

Hong Kong Cross Harbour Race returns after 2024 cancellation, registration open

Hong Kong fans give Arsenal's US$74 million Gyokeres ‘good first impression'
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday that the rapturous reception for his team at the Hong Kong Football Festival had given their new striker Viktor Gyokeres a 'very good first impression' of the club. The Swede joined for an estimated US$74.2 million (HK$582 million) from Sporting Lisbon this week, as Arteta continued a spending spree aimed at upgrading on three successive English Premier League runners-up finishes. The 27-year-old Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, trained with his new teammates in front of 18,563 people at a boisterous Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday night. Arteta was planning to discuss with medical staff whether Gyokeres would make his debut in the sold-out Kai Tak match against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. 'When the news broke [of Gyokeres signing], he realised the magnitude of this club he was going to be representing, how fast everything goes viral,' Arteta said. 'His immediate reaction was 'wow'.
