PCMC cancer hospital in final stage of approval
The PCMC, for the past two years, has been working to set up a dedicated cancer hospital in Thergaon. A tender was issued to set up the hospital on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. However, the tender received a poor response.
Furthermore, even after three extensions, only one contractor came forward. Following this, the PCMC decided to award the project to this contractor. The PCMC will provide a land parcel to the contractor for 30 years.
Approvals have been completed, and the proposal is in the final stage and has been submitted to the Standing Committee for approval, said officials.
Dr Laxman Gophane, health officer of PCMC, said, the treatment charges at the hospital will be covered under the Mahatma Jyotiba Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY).
'The patients not eligible for any scheme will be treated as per the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates, which makes it accessible to all income groups. The proposal is in the end stage, and the work will start soon,' he said.
The hospital will also offer auxiliary services like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgeries, and counselling. It will be equipped to treat various types of cancers, including breast, lung, prostate, and cervical cancer. Facilities like linear accelerators, brachytherapy units, and PET-CT scans will also be available, informed Dr Gophane.

State Government approves BSc Nursing College at YCM Hospital with 60 seats
In a boost to medical education and public healthcare in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the State government has granted final approval to establish a BSc Nursing College at the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital, run by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The new college, named the 'Institute of Nursing Sciences', will commence its operations with an intake of 60 students from the academic year 2025–26, officials announced on Saturday. (HT) According to officials, the nursing college will be housed in the newly constructed 11-storey building on the YCM Hospital campus. Additionally, the classes and training sessions will be conducted on the third, fourth, and sixth floors of the said building. According to officials, the idea to establish a nursing college was first proposed in January 2022. Administrative and elected body approvals were granted through the Standing Committee on March 10, 2022, and the General Body on April 6, 2022. This Nursing college marks a significant addition to PCMC's medical education infrastructure. Since the inception of the Postgraduate Institute at YCM Hospital in 2018, over 240 postgraduate students have supported the hospital's critical operations — especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the launch of the nursing college, a new generation of trained nursing professionals will emerge to strengthen the city's public healthcare system, said the YCM Hospital officials. This initiative is a strategic investment in both public health and women's empowerment. The Institute of Nursing Sciences will further enhance Pimpri Chinchwad's growing stature as a hub for quality medical education and services, the officials said. Dr Rajendra Wabale, dean, postgraduate institute, YCM Hospital, said, 'The admissions for the BSc Nursing course will be carried out by the Maharashtra State CET cell and Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai. The move not only addresses the rising demand for qualified nursing professionals but also ensures affordable and accessible nursing education for eligible candidates from the PCMC region.'

An application for affiliation was submitted to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, on November 5, 2024. Haemophilia patients in a fix as shots run short at govt hosps
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: For around 492 registered haemophilia patients in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, doses of Emicizumab are unavailable at the state-run hospitals. Even though the vital injection of Emicizumab is hailed as a paradigm shift in haemophilia care, it is available at the state-run hospitals only at Latur and Parbhani from Marathwada, along with Kolhapur and Chandrapur, said Kalpana Mankar, president of Haemophilia Society, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar chapter. "Emicizumab is a breakthrough treatment which needs to be administered only once weekly or monthly instead of traditional therapy requiring injections at least two to three times per week. The traditional method not only imposes a considerable physical and emotional burden on patients and caregivers but also results in high healthcare costs," she said. According to Haemophilia Society, many Indian states have already made Emicizumab available in their public healthcare systems, reducing the financial burden on families by nearly 50% compared to traditional therapies. Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder where the blood doesn't clot properly due to a deficiency or absence of clotting factors. Patients, particularly children, suffer from frequent bleeding into their joints, leading to chronic pain and haemophilic arthropathy — a debilitating condition that destroys joints. According to the Haemophilia Society, Maharashtra has around 5,000 haemophilia patients at present.
