Disturbing footage shows the moment the off-duty cop chased the suspect down the street then slammed him to the ground and held him in a chokehold.
In a desperate attempt to stop him from killing the alleged thief, locals are heard calling: "please let him breathe".
"You're going to suffocate the guy, man. Let go of his neck," one shouts.
Another can be heard saying: "He's not going to run away. Just let him go."
Ignoring their pleas, the officer continues to press down on the man's neck before police and paramedics arrived at the scene.
But despite medics' attempt at saving him, he was soon pronounced dead after suffering from cardia arrest.
Emergency services confirmed in a statement that a 36-year-old man had died of asphyxiation after 30 minutes of attempted resuscitation.
Officers arrested the unnamed cop who appeared in court today.
The devastating incident has sparked outrage in Spain, with some drawing comparisons to the killing of George Floyd in 2020 who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes.
Sharing their horror online, one person posted: ''I can't breathe.' These were the words George Floyd uttered minutes before his death when a New York police officer killed him by asphyxiation."

Another wrote: "Murdering a person for a simple phone. An off-duty municipal police officer suffocates a person.
"This is how the capitalist world is, a telephone is worth more than a person's life. What a disgusting society!"
Spain's progressive party Más Madrid also weighed in, calling the assault a reflection of how "institutional racism" and "abuse of power" are normalized.
A spokesperson said: "Two police officers, who were apparently under the influence of alcohol, have murdered a person in Torrejón. T
"This reflects how institutional racism and abuse of power are normalized, even outside of working hours.
"We demand an immediate investigation into this alleged murder due to asphyxiation caused by a police officer in Torrejón."
This isn't the first time a case like this has taken place in Madrid.
In 2018, protests erupted in the city after a Senegalese vendor was shot dead in the Italian city of Florence.
Some 19 protesters and 10 police officers were injured as clashes spread across the city.

Earlier this month, a small group of protesters started gathering at the iconic stainless steel artwork. Demonstrators were heard chanting: 'There is a man in the Bean' and 'What do we want? The man to get out.' Enthusiastic demonstrators even handed out leaflets claiming the man's existence was a cover-up - kept secret from locals for more than two decades. Unbelievable footage showed the movement congregate in front of the landmark, holding up pieces of cardboard with messages like: "GET HIM OUT NOW!" The conspiracy, which also has an Instagram page dedicated to it, claims that bystanders can see a faint outline of the trapped man when the angle of the sun is "just right". The social media account uploaded a poster which says: WE CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE MAN INSIDE THE BEAN. "However, when the sun hits the Bean just right, YOU CAN SEE A FAINT OUTLINE OF THE MAN." The poster ends with a prompt to citizens that they should contact Reilly's office - with his name spelled incorrectly - to demand that he take "immediate action" to free the man. The official said: 'I am happy to confirm that a man has not been trapped inside Cloud Gate (aka 'the Bean') for the past 21 years." He continued: 'I appreciate light-hearted parody as much as the next guy, and I've always welcomed public engagement. 'However, this online hoax has led to a heavy uptick in calls to my office. 'Unfortunately, answering the heavy volume of calls regarding this hoax is ultimately a distraction for my office from the real work we do for the 42nd Ward and City of Chicago each day." 7 The sculpture was created by Brit Artist Anish Kapoor Credit: Getty 7 Protesters seen travelling on public transport headed to the Bean Credit: Instagram The silver sculpture was created in the mid-2000s by Indian-born Brit artist Anish Kapoor. The aforementioned poster which calls for the councillor to release the imprisoned man claims that he was put in there when he was a baby after Kapoor kidnapped him. The poster reads: "When construction began on the Bean in 2004, Anish Kapoor, the artist and chief architect behind The Bean (Cloud Gate) STOLE A BABY and put that baby inside of The Bean. "THE MAN has been held captive there ever since - LIVING IN COMPLETE ISOLATION." Baffled social media users flooded the comments section with questions. One said: "How does he eat?" While another joked: "Is he okay with bean in there?" 7 A city councillor had to assure the public there was no man trapped inside the Bean Credit: Getty

Iceland boss dishing out FREE cash to customers for snitching on shoplifters
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ICELAND customers will be paid to snitch on shoplifters, the supermarket's boss has pledged. Richard Walker said the chain would give shoppers £1 on their bonus cards if they point out thieves to store workers. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Iceland's boss has said customers will be paid £1 to point out shoplifters to staff Credit: Alamy He said this would help the chain to lower its prices, as shoplifting currently costs Iceland over £20million a year. Iceland is believed to be the first major UK supermarket to bring in incentives for shoppers who snitch on the criminals. "I'd actually like to announce that we will give a pound to any customer who points out a shoplifter," He told Channel 5 News on Wednesday. "We will put it on their bonus card if they see any customer in our stores who are undertaking that offence." Asked if he thought the policy would deter thieves, he said: "Well, yeah, because some people see it as a victimless crime. It is not. "It also keeps prices from being lowered because it's a cost to the business, it's a cost to the hours that we pay our colleagues, as well as it obviously being about intimidation and violence." Mr Walker also revealed that shoplifting costs the supermarket chain more than £20million a year. "That's not £20 million of profit. That's just £20 million that we could pay in more hours to our colleagues or in lowering prices," he said. "So we'd like our customers to help us lower our prices even more by pointing out shoplifters and then we'll give them a quid back." It comes after The Sun revealed that Britain's shoplifting epidemic is costing households almost £147 a year, as stores hike prices to recoup their losses and pay for extra security measures. McDonald's Sauce Restriction Sparks Outrage: Fan Reactions & Fast Food Changes Many major high street chains have added alarm tags and stickers, each costing around £50, to protect their goods. Some are even going a step further to deter thieves. A Tesco Express in Brighton, for example, recently locked all of its beer and wine behind tills with spirits and cigarettes. Some retailers, including Ann Summers, are even arming staff with body cameras to combat theft. There were 516,971 shoplifting crimes last year, according to the Office for National Statistics - a 20 per cent increase on 2023 when 429,873 offences were recorded. Mr Walker's comments come just days after Iceland announced it would have to hike food prices following the Rachel Reeves' tax raid on businesses. In recently published accounts, the retailer said National Insurance and minimum wage hikes had led to increased supplier costs. It was a significant U-turn to comments made by Mr Walker in January, when he told The Telegraph that companies should stop "wallowing" and complaining about the measures announced in Labour's Autumn Budget.
