The arrival of Shubman Gill in India's T20I scheme of things is not good news for Sanju Samson. Contrary to the initial expectations, Gill was believed to wait for his return to India's T20I squad, but when the BCCI chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, announced his name as the vice-captain, Samson's fate was sealed. The opening pair of Samson and Abhishek Sharma was the one constant India was supposed to stick with for their Asia Cup campaign, but since there's no way the vice-captain will be benched, Samson, unfortunately, through no fault of his own, will have to make way. The man made his India debut in 2015; how come, even after 10 years of being around in the international set-up, he hasn't been able to cement his place? The T20 is his favourite hunting ground, given the success he has enjoyed in the IPL, but with Gill returning to the opening position along with Abhishek, Samson's relegation becomes a well-known fact. He sure is part of the Asia Cup squad, but chances of Samson playing in the XI look dim, especially with Jitesh Sharma set to be the designated wicketkeeper in the absence of Rishabh Pant. Just recently, Samson, during his chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter's YouTube channel, revealed how India's head coach Gautam Gambhir assured him he won't be dropped, not even after he scores 21 ducks in a row. So how did things go downhill so quickly? Former BCCI selector Devang Gandhi has the answer. "You can't ignore the talent Samson has. But he is already close to 31. If he couldn't seal his place, it's because he could never be consistent, even in the IPL. There are obvious issues with him playing the heavy ball,' he told The Times of India. Gandhi makes somewhat of a valid point. Samson was troubled by the short ball earlier this year when England played 5 T20Is against them in January-February. To the extent that Samson's impressive figures across last year don't stand much of a chance. And boy, those are some numbers. In 2024, Samson smashed three T20I centuries for India, and as an opener has better numbers – 522 runs from 17 innings – than in the middle order – 339 runs from 21. Samson also became just the sixth player to score back-to-back T20I centuries. Gandhi, however, reaffirms that the door hasn't shut entirely on Samson. If he does well, given a chance, Samson can prolong his T20I career for India. But the question remains: What is the definition of doing well if scoring all those runs isn't? "He probably fell behind because he struggled to play the pace of England's bowling attack at home. But if he can show he is flexible enough, he can finally seal his spot," Gandhi, who played 4 Tests and 3 ODIs for India, added.

Will KL Rahul, Siraj play Duleep Trophy? BCCI tells state associations to pick India players after top Test cricketers were ignored by South Zone
Irked by the non-selection of top players like KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj for the Duleep Trophy squad by South Zone, the BCCI has sent a letter to all state associations to select centrally contracted cricketers for the domestic season opener. The BCCI sent an email last week after a few associations didn't pick international players for the premier domestic tournament scheduled to start on August 28 in Bengaluru. The move was primarily triggered by South Zone's decision not to select Rahul, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan, and Siraj. The Indian players are currently getting a month-long break after the England tour. The BCCI's general manager cricket operations Abey Kuruvilla emailed the associations about the need to honour the premier domestic tournament. 'To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it's imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked,' Kuruvilla wrote in an email accessed by The Indian Express. Last year, in February, the BCCI had laid down the rule that it's 'mandatory' for international players to make themselves available for all domestic cricket, after they had noticed a trend of some players 'prioritising IPL over domestic cricket'. This year, again, after the series in Australia concluded in January, the board had yet again reiterated that it was mandatory for players to play domestic cricket. However, many state associations feel that international stars should play for India A or Board president XI teams instead of Duleep or Deodhar Trophy. Their reason is that because of this influx of national players, the Ranji players who had worked hard through a season are forced to make way for international stars in Duleep Trophy. They argue that their players who had done well in past seasons don't get rewarded for their performance once these Indian players walk into the side. South Zone was the first team to pick their Duleep Trophy squad on July 27 and they named Tilak Varma as the captain. The BCCI hadn't issued their diktat at that point. However, there is no clarity whether South Zone will change their squad now, post the email from Kuruvilla. Top players like Shubman Gill (Test captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Shreyas Iyer will be playing for their respective zones in the upcoming Duleep Trophy. Additionally, in his mail, Kuruvilla had written that all the contracted players have to adhere to the guidelines sent to them. 'Participation in domestic matches: All players contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI. In case, any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament form the National coach and the chairman of selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case of any leave is granted the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason,' Kuruvilla added. For the 2025 Duleep Trophy, the teams are selected by zonal selectors, not the national selectors, as the tournament has returned to a zonal format. Last season, it was a national selector-picked, team-based tournament. The Indian board this year decided to return to the traditional zonal-based format.
