Deaf football manager shares heartfelt message to younger self

Glasgow Times12-05-2025
George McGowan, who is also the assistant manager of Great Britain Deaf Women and chairman of Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club, recorded the message as part of the National Deaf Children's Society's Deaf Awareness Week campaign.
He said: "When you have dreams, please don't let other people stop you because you are deaf.
"On your journey through life, there will be times where you face barriers and obstacles.
"The best way to overcome these barriers is to let people know that you are deaf.
"The first time you tell people you're deaf can be nerve-wracking, but you will get more confident."
George, who has severe to profound hearing loss and wears hearing aids, was not diagnosed until he was four years old.
The 49-year-old, who was brought up in Glasgow but now lives in Paisley, delivered advice he would like to have heard when he was younger.
He said: "Always remember if you're feeling less confident...ask for support.
"Many people out there are not very deaf aware.
"Don't let that make you feel embarrassed or let it affect your confidence.
"Be confident.

"Sometimes being nervous isn't a bad thing.
"You might be going to an interview or doing a talk at school.
"If you're feeling nervous, that's normal.
"That really means that you really, really want to do it.'
George's message is one of a series of videos from deaf people to their younger selves, shared by the National Deaf Children's Society on social media during Deaf Awareness Week.
Arran Masterman, from the National Deaf Children's Society, said: "We want deaf children and their families to be inspired by these stories and messages of empowerment.
"We're encouraging deaf children to embrace their deaf identity and see their uniqueness as a strength.
"It's also about raising awareness of deaf experiences.
"Whether it's overcoming barriers, finding confidence, or embracing sign language, every story is a celebration of deaf pride and resilience, for deaf children, young people and the wider deaf community.
'The National Deaf Children's Society wants deaf children and young people to keep believing in themselves, keep aiming high, and achieving whatever they want to do.'
Anyone looking for advice, support, or information about deafness is invited to visit the National Deaf Children's Society's website or call the society's helpline on 0808 800 8880.

EastEnders' George Knight's 'death sealed' as disturbing storyline 'begins'

George Knight may have landed himself in trouble on the Square during tonight's EastEnders, as dealer Okie said he could make the boxer 'disappear' if he needed to George Knight was left reeling in tonight's EastEnders, as he tried to find out who had given his younger brother Kojo drugs - but he may have landed himself in big trouble, as Okie made it clear that he wanted him gone. ‌ Last night, George found his brother lying on a bench, after Okie had given him a pill to 'calm down'. During tonight's episode, the former Queen Vic landlord enlisted the help of Albert Square police officer Jack, who said he'd have to arrest Kojo. ‌ George tried to convince Jack not to take things further, but whether he will do, is still unknown. Although Kojo may be safe, it doesn't look like the same thing can be said for George. The worrying storyline comes after Colin Salmon teased he'd be part of a 'disturbing storyline' during an interview on Good Morning Britain last week. ‌ With Kojo not revealing who he got the pill from, George was certain Harry was the culprit, as he marched over to Harry's Barn to confront him. The confrontation turned violent, with the boxer strangling Nicola's son, as he could barely breathe. Nicola and Teddy convinced George to let go of their son, but George wasn't letting things go. "I know you were involved in this somehow," he said. "I can see it on your face. Don't try and deny it. Know that I will find out the truth, yeah?" he said, before storming out of the establishment. A fuming Harry later confronted Okie, scolding him for giving the pills to Kojo, but it was Okie who lost his temper in later scenes - as he asked Harry where George lived. Of course, Harry didn't let slip. ‌ "So we're just going to let him mouth off to the public?", Okie exclaimed. "What do you think Ravi's going to do when he finds out the feds are on us again?" "All I'm saying is you don't know him and what he's capable of," Harry responded. "You don't know what I'm capable off!" Okie exclaimed. "So if this Kojo's brother's going to become a problem, we're going to have to make him disappear," he said, as he showed off a gun under his belt. But could this be the end for George? Some fans think so. ‌ Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one wrote: "They've hinted a potential death or prison exit tonight for George - He's already on a suspended sentence so he wouldn't want to take the risk of attacking Okie in case he ends up in prison or worse case scenario dead." "Depending on how nebulous this Kojo/Harry/George/Ravi story is will Phil get involved later down the line? Julies taking over with Nigel and if something happens to George, Phil could come into it?", questioned another. Another tweet read: "They've hinted tonight that George could end up dead - or seriously hurt but I hope this doesn't happen. Although once the police get hold of Harry it won't be long until the feds close in on Okie and Ravi again. I'm intrigued by Ravi's next move here." Last week, during his GMB interview, George teased: "We've got another storyline you haven't seen before. I did the farming storyline, we have another storyline that is perfect for this time, it's real, it's really disturbing and it's coming. I can't tell you what it is." Could this be the beginning of the end?

EastEnders gun shocker in early BBC iPlayer release as legend faces death

This article contains spoilers for tonight's EastEnders, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. Tonight's episode of EastEnders made clear that if George Knight (Colin Salmon) continues to seek answers over who supplied Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho) with MDMA, he could find himself in grave danger. Or an actual grave. Viewers have seen Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) bolster his drug operation, although the base of the enterprise has moved uncomfortably close to home. Upon Okie's (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu) suggestion to essentially cuckoo Kojo, Okie has occupied his flat and set up show from there. With Kojo visibly panicking at the fact that Okie had turned his flat into a trap house, Okie gave him an MDMA pill, hoping it would calm him. When George found Kojo in a bad way, he set out to find the source of the drugs and make them pay. Managing to keep copper Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) at bay following his threats to arrest Kojo for being in possession of class A drugs, George had Kojo's best friend, Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) firmly in his sights in tonight's episode. Confronting him in Harry's Barn, George grips up a guilty Harry, who firmly denied being behind the incident. Though Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) manages to use some of George's own words regarding daughter Gina Knight (Francesca Henry) and her own drug use to break things up. George leaves a shaken Harry with a violent squeeze of his injured hand and a threat. Returning to Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden), George tells Jack that Harry is the source of the drugs, but, without proof, Jack is unable to take action. More Trending Meanwhile, at Kojo's, Harry laments to Okie about what's happened with George. Clearly rattled and scared of retribution from Ravi, Okie lifts his shirt to reveal a concealed gun and makes it clear to Harry: if George becomes a problem, they'll have to remove him. Permanently.
