OTSM's RM2 bil investment boosts Sarawak's tech hub ambition
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the joint venture between South Korea's OCI Company Ltd and Japan's Tokuyama Corporation highlights international trust in the state's stability, infrastructure, and long-term vision.
'This is a major milestone for high-tech industrial growth in Sarawak. It reflects our dedication to sustainable partnerships that will shape the future,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
The facility, the first of its kind outside Japan and South Korea, will produce high-purity polysilicon, a key material for semiconductors used in smartphones, electric vehicles, data centres, and AI.
Abang Johari emphasised that the project aligns with Sarawak's Semiconductor Strategic Framework, which aims to position the state as a regional hub for advanced tech manufacturing.
'This investment solidifies Sarawak's place in the global semiconductor supply chain and brings us closer to becoming a regional tech leader,' he added.
Sarawak's green energy advantage was also highlighted, with 70 per cent of its electricity sourced from hydropower and solar energy. 'Sustainability drives our Post COVID-19 Development Strategy. Our green energy makes Sarawak ideal for eco-friendly investments,' he said.
The Premier also shared plans to develop an AI-powered semiconductor chip in collaboration with UK academic institutions, with international intellectual property registration targeted by year-end.
To support industry growth, the state government offers free tertiary education at local universities, ensuring a skilled workforce for future tech demands.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), the PSN Beladin project is a joint initiative involving the Sarawak government, its Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), LKIM, and the Sarawak State Economic Planning Unit, with a total allocation of RM21.25 million. 'The first phase saw the completion of 68 housing units at a cost of RM6.8 million, of which 59 have been handed over to recipients who have signed home ownership agreements,' said the authority. The PSN Beladin initiative reflects the government's commitment to providing well-planned, comfortable, and strategically located housing for fishing communities – essential contributors to the state's fisheries sector. LKIM added that the initiative is also in line with the Sarawak government's aspirations to improve the quality of life for its people, particularly for fishermen who are key contributors to the state's fisheries sector. LKIM stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration between federal and state governments in ensuring the sustained well-being of fishing communities, including through infrastructure upgrades, economic empowerment, and climate resilience. 'This synergy is crucial in planning, implementing, and monitoring various development initiatives, including the provision of better housing, improvements to basic infrastructure, and the creation of new economic opportunities. 'Continued cooperation is also expected to strengthen the resilience of fishing communities in facing current and future challenges, in line with the goal of making the national fisheries sector more sustainable and competitive,' added the authority. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the 1.55-kilometre bridge not only connects key coastal areas such as Pusa and Beladin, but also provides direct access to nearby longhouses and villages — opening new opportunities for modern agriculture and economic development. 'This bridge is a crucial connector for the entire coastal road project and directly benefits rural communities by opening up access and creating opportunities for modern agriculture,' he said at the launch, which also marked the inauguration of the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA). Abang Johari said the bridge eliminates the need for ferry services, significantly improving transport efficiency. 'Sarawak must adopt modern approaches in connecting urban and rural areas. Traditional methods like boats and ferries are no longer viable. 'In the past, for example, residents in Sebuyau had to wait for high tide just to reach Kuching. During the monsoon season, movement was completely cut off. These were real barriers to connectivity,' he said. He reaffirmed the Sarawak government's commitment under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to resolve rural development challenges through strategic investments in infrastructure. 'Our goal is to complete a comprehensive infrastructure network by 2030, not only to improve access and public amenities but also to support education and the advancement of modern agriculture in rural areas,' he said. On the naming of the bridge, the Premier said a formal name would be proposed later, based on the area's historical significance and with input from local leaders and historians. 'We don't want to retain the name 'Saribas 1 Bridge'. I leave it to the local leaders and historians to propose a name that reflects the area's heritage,' he said. He also revealed that more projects are in the pipeline, with the Lingga Bridge set to be launched soon, while the massive Batang Lupar Bridge is expected to be completed by late 2026 or early 2027. 'We're not just building roads – we want to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to benefit from this development,' he said, stressing the link between physical connectivity and Sarawak's education aspirations. Earlier, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas praised the Premier's vision of a continuous land route from Kuching to Miri – one that eliminates the need for ferry crossings – as becoming a reality thanks to substantial state investment. He said a total of RM5.9 billion has been allocated for the construction of 16 major bridges across Sarawak to ease congestion and ensure seamless travel. 'To date, five bridges have been completed – Marudi, Muara Lassa, Batang Rajang, Batang Saribas, and Jepak – while the remaining 11 are at various stages of construction. 'Our ministry is working hard to ensure these projects are completed on schedule. By June 2026, we hope drivers will no longer need to queue for hours to board ferries,' Uggah said. Attempts to stir conflict within PBB driven by envy of Sarawak's success, says Abang Johari

Speaking at the launch of the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge and the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) today, he said misleading narratives had been circulated online to suggest a falling-out between him and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. 'Recently, there were attempts to stir conflict within PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), suggesting that Awang Tengah and I are at odds. 'These things happen when people are jealous of our success, because our economy is doing well,' he said. Abang Johari stressed that such attempts would not derail the unity within the party or Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as a whole. He also highlighted Sarawak's rising global profile in the green energy sector, particularly its leadership in hydrogen development. He said he had recently been invited to speak in Japan and will be addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos this coming January on the global economy, adding that the forum had recognised Sarawak as an emerging industrial cluster powered by renewable energy. 'Sarawak is being noticed. No other state is producing green energy like we are. With the electricity we generate, we can meet our own needs and sell the surplus to earn income. 'That income can help fund university tuition. Who benefits? The people do,' he said. Abang Johari reaffirmed his administration's commitment to unity and people-centric development. 'That is why when we are doing well, some people will try to cause division. But don't worry – as long as I'm in GPS, we will not be divided. 'We will continue to prioritise the people of Sarawak.
