Jessi Alexander(Warner Chappell Music)Alexander came out of the gate strong with a terrific 2005 debut album, 'Honeysuckle Sweet,' and then got dropped from her label the following year. Ironically, it's been all uphill from there in her second act as a hit songwriter. In 2009, she landed her first top 10 hit as a co-writer with the Miley Cyrus smash 'The Climb,' and by 2012, she had her first country No. 1 with Blake Shelton's 'Drink on It' — launching her on a path that led to her first nomination for the Grammys' prestigious songwriter of the year, non-classical award, for hits by Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Dustin Lynch and Megan Moroney. It's all added up to a happy ending: 'I usually like to be the girl in the background,' she says.
Jessie Jo Dillon(Big Machine Music)One of the most successful tunesmiths of this era, Dillon has received six Grammy nominations, including one for the 2025 songwriter of the year, non-classical, for her work with Brandy Clark, Megan Moroney, Jelly Roll, Catie Offerman, Dan + Shay, Old Dominion, Hardy and Lori McKenna (and you can add Post Malone, Morgan Wallen, Kelsea Ballerini, Megan Maroney and loads more to the list of her recent work). The daughter of Nashville royalty — Dean Dillon, who wrote hits for George Strait, Kenny Chesney and Toby Keith — her first song was not only a hit but a Grammy nominee: Strait's 'The Breath You Take,' co-written with her dad.
Natalie Hemby(Jody Williams Songs)On a single Friday in March, Hemby had songs she co-wrote come out on albums by Mumford & Sons, Jessica Simpson and Lola Kirke. 'That's very, very broad, which honestly is very me,' she says. 'When I was in high school, I was pretty much friends with everybody, and I floated in between groups, and I feel like I still do that with music. I have a mainstream country single out now with Parker McCollum, and this year I've been writing with Jon Batiste. I'm like a kid in a candy store: I want the chocolate, the jelly beans, the Twizzlers — everything.' She's had eight No. 1 country singles, including hot streaks with Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town. 'But my most popular songs are not always the smash ones.
Ink(Big Loud)A multi-hyphenate and multi-genre artist-songwriter-producer, Atia 'Ink' Boggs has worked with Beyonce ('Cowboy Carter' and 'Renaissance'), Kendrick Lamar, Jennifer Lopez, Leon Bridges and more, but it may not be long before the Georgia-raised honoree breaks out as a solo artist, inking (sorry) an artist deal with Big Loud earlier this week. 'Country music, to me, is more of a feeling,' she says. 'Sometimes it feels like a big-ass hug at the family reunion. It's all about the storytelling and for me it's not time to fit in a box — it's time to break the mold.'
Steph Jones(Reservoir Media)Looking at the upper echelons of pop charts of the past 24 months, there's almost a larger percentage of artists who have worked with veteran songwriter Jones than those who haven't: a 10-year collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter ('Espresso'), along with Jelly Roll, Teddy Swims, Kelsea Ballerini, Selena Gomez, Myles Smith, Pharrell, Tucker Wetmore, Renee Rapp, Jade — we could go on. The Missouri native came up in the church and, after stints in Austin and Los Angeles, recently returned to the place where she got her start: Music City.

Party on, Jon Jamón: Jon Hamm spotted at Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico
When Jon Hamm touches down in PR, he's far from a "Turista." The Emmy-winning actor, who's made it no secret that he's a Bad Bunny superfan, was spotted attending the reggaeton superstar's concert residency in Puerto Rico over the weekend. Bad Bunny kicked off the hotly anticipated string of shows, titled No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí, on July 11 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, the island's largest indoor arena. Hamm, also known by his fan alias "Jon Jamón," was seen dancing to the Grammy-winning singer's energetic set throughout the concert. The "Mad Men" alum, 54, also channeled the tropical inspiration of the Puerto Rican landscape with his show attire, which included a short-sleeved, island-style shirt with matching bottoms and a bucket hat. As seen in concert footage, Hamm had one of the best seats in the house. The actor was spotted in Bad Bunny's "La Casita," a VIP section modeled after a traditional Puerto Rican home. Hamm waved and blew kisses to nearby fans, and he gyrated to the music as Bad Bunny made his way through the crowd. Hamm isn't the only celebrity who's partied it up at Bad Bunny's casita. Actor Austin Butler, who went viral for his dance moves at the singer's residency, raved about the concert experience during an Aug. 12 interview on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." "I'm just like, so proud of him," Butler recalled. "I'm watching him going, 'Oh my God, look how much you mean to everyone here.' I'm like, falling in love with Puerto Rican culture and the dancing, and everybody is so sexy and amazing." Bad Bunny is expected to continue his residency performances every weekend through Sept. 14, followed by a world tour that commences in November. Hamm and Bad Bunny performed together for the 50th anniversary special of "Saturday Night Live," during which Hamm received the nickname "Jon Jamón" from "SNL" alum Amy Poehler as a play on his surname (Jamón translates to "ham" in Spanish). Dakota Johnson and ‘Splitsville' Co-Stars on Playing ‘Unhappy' Characters, Open Relationships and a Possibly Fake Penis
'Splitsville' may be a rom-com, but Dakota Johnson's character Julie doesn't take part in much of the movie's comedy. 'I liked playing a really sort of unhappy woman,' Johnson told me Tuesday at the film's premiere at AMC the Grove in Los Angeles. Their lives begin to unravel when Ashley and Carey breakup and it's revealed that Julie and Paul have an open relationship. 'I just love this tone of film,' Johnson said. 'I love Mike and Kyle's comedy, the way they write, the way they work together. I think the subject matter [open relationships] is really interesting and controversial, and I think people are very curious about it.' The cast also includes Nicholas Braun, David Castañeda, Charlie Gillespie, Simon Webster, Stephen Adekolu, Tyrone Benskin and O-T Fagbenle. Marvin and Covino penned the script, and Johnson served as a producer with her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly. 'Succession' star Braun makes a cameo in 'Splitsville' as a mentalist performing at a children's birthday party. He said the movie had him thinking about open relationships. 'I can't do an open marriage or open relationship,' Braun said. 'I'm too sensitive for that, too jealous. I mean, it's brutal what happens to them in this movie and they're cool about it sort of — but also not. But I couldn't tolerate that. It would be torture. And it feels mean…It's complicated.' The Covino-directed ensemble received a six-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Ahead of its debut in Cannes' Premiere section, 'Splitsville' was acquired by Neon. In one much buzzed about scene, Paul and Carey get into a hilarious and what seems like never-ending fight which results in destroyed walls, furniture and more in Paul and Julie's gorgeous modern lakefront home. The first half of the brawl, on the first floor of the house, was done in one take seven times. 'It was an actual house and we destroyed it,' Marvin told me. 'Everyone was just patching up and trying to figure it [out]…and then we went right away and just beat each other up.' Covino added, 'We destroyed one house multiple times, so technically two or three houses. It was heavily choreographed and heavily rehearsed. After a long day of scouting and prepping, we would go to a bouldering gym where they had deep mats that we could fall on and just throw each other around.' Carey's penis is also seen a couple of times in the movie, most notably during an incident in the opening sequence. Marvin and Covino playfully declined to say if they used a prosthetic. 'No comment,' Marvin said, laughing. 'I think people are going to have to go look and see for themselves and make a choice.' Johnson's starring role in 'Splitsville' follows the recent success of 'Materialists,' her Celine Song rom-com with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans that has earned more $75 million worldwide at the box office. Johnson said, 'I think rom-coms are an incredible genre, so I'm glad that we are having some success.' 'Splitsville' is in select theaters Aug. 22 and everywhere Sept. 5. Michael Franti dropped by management amid 'troubling' allegations
Musician Michael Franti has reportedly been dropped by his management company, amid a string of cancellations connected to claims of misconduct. Activist Artists Management dropped Franti, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, as the pop-reggae artist attempts to weather a scandal seemingly brought on by a series of social media posts from singer-songwriter Victoria Canal. Activist Artists Management did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier this week, Soulshine at Sea 3, an aquatic music festival headlined by Franti, was canceled after an exodus of slated artists. The cruise was intended to sail in November from Miami to Mexico—until artists like Dispatch, Maggie Rose, Hirie, and Liz Vice pulled their performances. "We've decided we will no longer be performing at Soulshine at Sea. We have been made aware of deeply concerning public allegations involving another artist on the lineup and have chosen to withdraw from the event," Dispatch said in an Aug. 16 post on Facebook. "We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding." Hirie and Vice also referenced "concerning" and "troubling allegations" in their respective social media posts. In a post to Soulshine at Sea's website Aug. 17, event promoter Sixthman referenced "recent events" when confirming the cancellation and promised to unveil a replacement cruise soon. Franti took to social media shortly after to acknowledge he had "a romantic relationship outside my marriage" with an unnamed artist, an admission seemingly connected to the cancellation. While neither Franti nor any of the Soulshine performers named the artist, their posts directly followed allegations made on Instagram earlier this month by Canal, who said she had been groomed by a "very powerful, decades older man." The abuse, the Spanish singer-songwriter alleged, began when she was 19, after she was "plucked" from the internet during her college years, and promised professional opportunities. Canal, 27, went on to allege that this man now enjoys a family-man image and active career, but "has a history of incredibly damaging behavior" behind the scenes and is protected by "a team of enablers." "This experience, which lasted a little over a year, has had a years-lasting effect on my intimate life," she wrote. "The truth is, I just couldn't carry on hiding this part of me. Hiding from the young women who follow me has felt so painful, and I finally feel so ready to speak on it openly." Reps for Franti have not responded to USA TODAY's request for comment, including questions on a nonconsensual relationship with Canal. Canal went on to promise the release of a new song that would address the trauma and explained that she was omitting the name of her alleged accuser for fear of financial and professional harm. When reached for comment, a rep for Canal said: "It feels very liberating for Victoria to speak on her experience as she continues to heal. She hopes sharing can help young women entering the world of music to keep their eyes open and protect themselves." Following Canal's posts, Tank and the Bangas, a group slated to tour alongside Franti for the remainder of the summer, also canceled their joint shows, writing on Instagram: "While we are not aware of any specific details related to the matter, in light of the recent post made by the artist, we have made the difficult decision to not participate, until we have a better understanding of the facts." Franti, in his own lengthy statement posted to Instagram, wrote that while he had had an extramarital affair seven years prior with a fellow musician on his tour, it was entirely "consensual." He did not name Canal. The pair collaborated on 2019's "The Flower" and Canal served as the opener on Franti's tour that same year. "I'm aware of the recent posts this artist made about our relationship, and while I support her need to express herself publicly, the relationship was completely consensual, based on mutual feelings and attraction. I vehemently dispute any version of the story that says otherwise," Franti wrote. "I will, however, take full accountability for not better recognizing the power imbalance as she was younger than me, and I was the headliner on tour."
