Crawley given sobering re-introduction to League Two with defeat at Grimsby
A debut penalty strike from Jaze Kabia, a header from Cameron McJannet and a piledriver from Evan Khouri gave Grimsby a convincing opening-day victory.
Kabia stepped up on debut after Kieran Green was fouled by Crawley goalkeeper Harvey Davies in the box just nine minutes in, and the former converted for the dream start to his Grimsby career.
The Mariners deserved their second goal 30 minutes in, this time provided by their centre-back McJannet, who powered in a header from a Charles Vernam cross.
Kabia hit the crossbar in first-half stoppage time, which might have put the game out of sight at that moment, but the result was wrapped up soon after the break.
Khouri was in on the act for the hosts in the 64th minute, firing low and hard into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the box after a few blocked shots.

Salford win is Crewe's blueprint for season
Crewe boss Lee Bell says his side's impressive win at Salford City on League Two's opening day has given them a "blueprint" for how to play this goals from Conor Thomas late in the first half, to add to an early own goal, put the Alex on their way to a 3-1 victory to get their campaign off to an ideal had 22 shots in the game, with nearly half of those attempts on target, 29 touches inside Salford's box and forced 10 says it was "really pleasing" to see that a lot of the work done on playing positively during pre-season was evident against the Ammies."It's a credit to the players - the energy and aggression we showed, the willingness to run forward and most importantly the willingness to get shots away," Bell told BBC Radio Stoke."We did a lot of work during pre-season with players about getting those shots away, creating the opportunities and being in the right positions."It was there to see - confidence to get the ball under pressure, confidence to play forward, confidence to get the shots away."It's a good start - but that's all it is, a start. Let's see if we can replicate it on Saturday."We've set ourselves a high benchmark - I don't think we got anywhere near that during the whole of last season." The Alex face Accrington in their first home game of the campaign on Saturday with Bell keen to maintain their early momentum and decent home record over the past few won 11 times at the Mornflake Stadium in 2022-23, then 11 again the following season and nine times last term - although only once in their final seven home games of 2024-25 as their play-off challenge Bell is confident they will still be a force on their own patch this time around."It is something we've been able to do - there have been some poor runs of form over the last two seasons which have deflected away from how well we've done at home," he said."But it's up to us and the players to make it a difficult place to come - the blueprint was there on Saturday. "We've got to emulate that at home and make it a difficult place for teams to come and impose themselves"Accrington will be different in how they set up but we don't want to take away that 'oomph' - of people running in behind, picking up second balls."It will be a different game and we'll have to adjust."

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RAITH ROVERS have revealed how fans have cast their votes after supporters were canvassed on whether they wanted to enter into a co-operation agreement with Rangers. The SFA have relaxed rules on strategic partnerships between clubs in an attempt to get more minutes for young players coming through youth academies. 3 Josh Gentles is one player who could come into the mix Credit: Willie Vass 3 Raith Rovers fans Credit: Michael Schofield Clubs are allowed to establish link-ups with clubs at various levels with Aberdeen joining up with Kelty Hearts in League One and Elgin City in League Two. Celtic have a deal with Ayr United, where former star Scott Brown is the manager, and have done loan deals for Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar. Hearts have a tie-in with Spartans (League Two) while Hibs have a deal in place with their League Two rivals East Kilbride. Kilmarnock have three partnerships in place, one with League One Queen of the South, one with Annan in League Two and one with Albion Rovers in the Lowland League. Then there's St Mirren, who have partnerships with Dumbarton in League One and Lowland League outfit Clydebank. Ayr Utd are the only Championship side who have taken advantage of the scheme to develop THEIR players, having established a tie-in with East Stirlingshire in the Lowland League. And Rangers are in talks with Raith Rovers - with their plans for a tie-in with Barry Robson's Championship side bolstered by getting the support of the fans in a poll. The likes of Josh Gentles, Leon King and even Bailey Rice or Findlay Curtis could come into the mix for loan deals as part of the arrangement - which allows stars to be recalled by their parent clubs with a minimum of fuss. A spokesman for the Fife club said: 'Thank you to everyone who responded to our recent survey on the proposed co-operation agreement. 'We received 988 responses from the 1,456 supporters contacted. Of those, 85.4% voted in favour of entering into the co-operation agreement. Rangers boss Russell Martin's big Tavernier and Raskin calls vs Plzen as he opens up on John Souttar contract 'We will now engage with Rangers to finalise the next steps of the agreement. 'We believe this is a positive step for Raith Rovers. "Other clubs in our division have already established similar partnerships with premiership sides and we see no reason why this would be any different." 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
