Rachel Brosnahan to Star in Season 2 of Apple's PRESUMED INNOCENT — GeekTyrant

Rachel Brosnahan is heading from Metropolis to the courtroom. T Emmy and Golden Globe-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and soon-to-be Lois Lane in James Gunn's Superman has locked in her next high-profile role. She'll lead and executive produce Season 2 of Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent , the legal drama from David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. Season 2 pivots to a new case and a new character. This time, the story is drawn from Dissection of a Murder , the debut legal thriller by Jo Murray. Plot specifics are still tightly sealed, but expect another deep dive into obsession, power, and the emotional fallout of crime. The description of the book reads: 'When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she's shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn't be the kind of case she's leading; it's way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her. 'To make things worse, he's refusing to talk. How is she supposed to prove herself on what appears to be an unwinnable case? Losing is not an option. She must find the most persuasive argument. Trials aren't won by convincing judges or fellow barristers – they're all about convincing a jury. 'Suddenly, Leila finds herself fighting not only to keep Jack out of prison, but also to keep her own secrets buried. It's true what they say – there are two sides to every story. Guilty or not guilty?' The first season of the series starred Jake Gyllenhaal and was inspired by Scott Turow's 1987 bestseller, centered on a murder that rocked Chicago's Prosecuting Attorney's office. Gyllenhaal played Rusty Sabich, a character first brought to screen by Harrison Ford in the 1990 film adaptation. Season 2 is being developed by David E. Kelley, who reimagined the story for Apple, will return as showrunner alongside Erica Lipez ( The Morning Show, We Were the Lucky Ones ). Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich executive produce for Bad Robot. Gyllenhaal, though not returning as lead, continues to executive produce through his Nine Stories banner. Author Scott Turow is on board as co-executive producer. Source: Deadline

Sydney Sweeney Means Business in Two Very Different Summer Suits

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Sydney Sweeney is taking on New York like a boss. In the midst of her Echo Valley press tour, the Euphoria star dressed up for a day of bouncing around talk shows in two different suit styles. While heading into Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, the actor was photographed in a grey archival 1996 Givenchy Couture suit by John Galliano. The suit, which nodded to Old Hollywood, featured a high-collar, semi-cropped jacket with a matching high-waisted skirt. Both pieces of the suit were equipped with bow detailing—two on either side of the jacket and the hip of the skirt. Jumping over to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Sweeney was photographed on the way to the taping in a crisp all-white suit look. The summery suit featured a fitted, plunging jacket with matching short shorts. The actor topped off the look with a sleek high pony and a smooth side strip on one side of her face. The White Lotus star accessorized both of her sophisticated suits with black pointed-toe pumps and black top-handle bags. Throughout her press tour, the star has channeled her inner Working Girl with a selection of chic boardroom-inspired looks from a tie collared pinstripe blazer dress to a silk checkered pant set from Oscar de la Renta. But for the premiere screening of her Apple TV+ film, Sweeney strayed away from structured suit silhouettes and brought the drama in a grand Vera Wang gown. The actor wowed in the scarlet red billing ballgown—a custom creation made of decadent Italian silk. The show-stopping look gave us high glamour as was no doubt one of the best red carpet moments since this year's Cannes Film Festival. ‘Echo Valley' has a few too many ideas for one movie

The dynamic between Kate and Claire is clear even before Claire's arrival, when Kate has a heated argument with her wealthy lawyer ex-husband, Richard ( Most of that trouble falls on Claire's relationship with her volatile boyfriend Ryan Sinclair (Edmund Donovan), and in turn on Ryan's dealings with Jackie. Gleeson is a chilling presence from the moment Jackie arrives, calmly demanding the money that Ryan owes him, and not caring whom he has to threaten or harm in order to get it. Claire and Ryan skip town for a few days to avoid Jackie's wrath, but Claire returns home late one night, with blood on her clothes and a dead body that she says is Ryan's in the back of her car. Advertisement Kate immediately springs into murder-coverup mode, going through the motions that have been depicted in countless thrillers, from cleaning the car to burning Claire's clothes to weighing the body down with cinderblocks and dumping it in a nearby lake. 'I took care of it. All of it,' Kate tells Claire, in the kind of ominously obvious foreshadowing that indicates to the audience that Kate did not actually take care of anything. So of course, Jackie comes back demanding money, but the bigger surprise is what happens with Claire and what Kate does about it. Claire is such a deliberately grating character that it's a relief when Sweeney essentially disappears for the second half of the movie, and an even bigger relief when Kate finally seems to realize how toxic and cruel her daughter really is. Faced with an unstable criminal making demands she can't meet, Kate turns to her resourceful best friend Leslie ( Advertisement With its muted color palette, measured pacing, and droning score, 'Echo Valley' sometimes comes off as a plodding drama about grief — not for the snotty, ungrateful Claire, but for the kind and patient Patty, who appears briefly in flashbacks, and in the requisite wedding video and old voicemails that Kate obsessively revisits. Director Michael Pearce explored similarly fraught familial relationships in his belabored 2021 drama 'Encounter,' and for a while 'Echo Valley' appears to be taking the same approach, turning potentially pulpy genre material into dour moralizing. Then the story takes a turn, and while those heavy themes don't disappear, Pearce treats them with more energy and occasional playfulness. Kate and Leslie get drunk and dance around to silly pop songs and reminisce about their respective coming-out stories. Leslie is supportive and pragmatic, and she helps Kate channel her inner latter-day Liam Neeson when it comes to dealing with Jackie. Ingelsby is best known as the creator of ' Domhnall Gleeson. Apple TV+ Moore remains an indomitable presence throughout Kate's emotional journey, but Gleeson (just a few weeks after playing a sleazy antagonist in another Apple TV+ original movie, 'Fountain of Youth') gives the most entertaining performance, playing up Jackie's gleeful sociopathy in a way that makes it easy to root for his downfall. Despite Sweeney's efforts, Claire's downfall is easy to root for, too, and Ingelsby and Pearce don't give her a smooth road to redemption. 'Echo Valley' travels a rough road as well, but it finds its footing when the time comes.
