British & Irish Lions 'did the shirt proud' after first Test win against Australia
British & Irish Lions secured victory in the opening Test as they triumphed 27-19 at the Suncorp Stadium on Saturday with coach Andy Farrell insisting his player 'did the shirt proud' in Brisbane. The tourists were touted by some as overwhelming favourites going into the first clash of a three-match series and they certainly came out of the blocks flying with fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings. The game's opening try came when Russell – who had already confidently banged over a penalty in front of the posts – had sent a magnificent long pass to his Scotland teammate Sione Tuipulotu who went over to put the Lions 10-0 ahead with less than 10 minutes on the clock. But the Wallabies dragged themselves into the game just before the half-hour mark when they halved the deficit after Max Jorgensen ripped the ball off Hugo Keenan in the air and raced clear to score. Any home joy was short-lived, though, as Tom Curry powered over the line with Russell converting to put the Lions 17-5 up at the break. Impressive Lions flankers Curry and Tadgh Beirne were hailed as 'absolutely immense' by coach Farrell afterwards. Any thoughts of an immediate Australian fight back after Joe Schmidt's half-time team talk took an immediate hit when Curry provided a killer pass to Dan Sheehan, who finished in the corner after two minutes, with Russell converting impressively from out wide to make it 24-5. But the Lions' began to fade as the half wore on and Australia were able to bring some respectability to the scoreline. The Wallabies thought they had struck back after some sustained pressure when Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii barged over next to the posts, but referee Ben O'Keeffe ruled he had not released the ball on the ground and the try was disallowed. With the match slipping away, replacement Wallaby flanker Carlo Tizzano burrowed over and Ben Donaldson's conversion made it 24-12 with 12 minutes remaining. Marcus Smith then popped over a penalty to put the Lions 27-12 ahead only for Tate McDermott to score a consolation try to Donaldson convert to end a disappointing last quarter for the Lions. Both teams will have plenty to work on looking forward to the second Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground next Saturday. 'Obviously we are delighted to get the result, to get the first under the belt,' saidLions head coach Andy Farrell. 'I thought we did the shirt proud, how we attacked the game especially in the first half was very pleasing. 'I thought we started very well, our game control was excellent throughout and the back row were immense throughout. 'We stood up, our physicality was spot in the first half, but in the second we were a bit loose. Plenty to work on for game two. 'The good thing is we roll on to Tuesday night and the rest of the guys get to put their hands up. It is a big occasion for us. 'We will be dealing with a wounded animal second up, MCG sold out, it doesn't get any better and we expect ourselves to be better again.' Lions captain Maro Itoje admitted that is had been 'a tough old game' in front of 52,229 fans at the Suncorp Stadium, 'No game of rugby is perfect. It wasn't perfect for us. 'We put pressure on ourselves with our decision making. It puts us in a good position, we definitely aren't complacent or comfortable.' As for Australia, coach Schmidt says his side paid the price for failing to take their opportunities. 'I felt like the players really dug in, and the score just before half-time was frustrating,' he said. 'We played well, and those tries got us back in the game. We've got character, but we didn't take the chances we should have. 'We'll make some decisions Monday and Tuesday. It's difficult to say if we'll change personal and how that will impact us.' 'Nothing will change for us, we need to win two games, we'll regroup and come back next week. I love representing Australia, I'm disappointed with the result.'

Russell votes his explosive semi-final heist as career-best
As Andre Russell prepares to call time on his international career, the Jamaican all-rounder has named his quickfire innings in the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal against India as his proudest moment representing the West Indies. Chasing home favourites India's total of 193 in the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal, Andre Russell walked in at No. 5 with the West Indies still needing 77 runs off 41 balls. "Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters," Russell said in a Cricket West Indies (CWI) interview. In a knock characteristic of his explosive style, Andre Russell smashed 43 runs off just 20 balls to take the West Indies home with two balls to spare. He sealed the victory by hitting a boundary off the bowling of Virat Kohli, "Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did." The knock was crucial in helping the West Indies book their ticket to the final, where they went on to beat England in a thrilling contest in Kolkata. This victory secured the team's second T20 World Cup title, with Andre Russell being part of both of the World Cup triumphs. "Obviously, two World Cups, it's just a different emotion," he said. "You sleep, you wake up [on the morning after the final], and you realise you've only been sleeping for two hours, but you feel well-rested because you just want to see what's going on on the internet, you want to see all of those memories and all of those good comments. Russell and Simmons launch West Indies into WT20 final Russell and Simmons launch West Indies into WT20 final with seven-wicket win over India Andre Russell recently announced his decision to retire from international cricket after the first two T20Is against Australia on July 20 and 22 both being played in his home ground at Sabina Park, Jamaica. Days before the first game of the series, Russell looked back at his cricketing career with pride. "It's a pretty good feeling,I think, [from the] first time I came to Sabina Park as a kid, and then to actually walk on the grass and feel the atmosphere and look in the stands and everything, and [to] now, I've achieved so much out of cricket for the last couple of years. I did my best in every chance I got, representing the West Indies. "I think it's the perfect ground and the perfect series - against a good team as well, Australia - to end my international career.'

Series on the line as India consider Bumrah gamble in do-or-die fourth Test against England
Jasprit Bumrah is a weapon India must use sparingly but with the five-test series against England on the line, the tourists are considering playing their pace spearhead in the fourth Test in Manchester next week. The team management has decided that Bumrah, whose workload has been carefully managed since he returned from a back surgery earlier this year, will play three of the five Tests in England. A victory in Manchester would give England an unassailable 3-1 lead. To prevent that, India are considering playing Bumrah, who skipped the second Test in Birmingham, in the next match rather than preserving him for the final Test at the Oval. 'We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests,' assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters after a training session on Thursday. 'It's pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.' 'But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with the Oval.' Arguably the best all-format bowler of his era, Bumrah registered five-wicket hauls in both the Tests he played on this tour of England, though India lost both in Leeds and Lord's. India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who suffered a finger injury at Lord's, did not bat in Thursday's practice. Ten Doeschate was confident Pant will reprise his usual roles in front of the stumps with the bat and behind them with the keeper's gloves in Manchester. 'Look, I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what,' former Dutch international ten Doeschate said. 'He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger.' Former India head coach Anil Kumble weighed in on the importance of Bumrah's availability for the rest of the Test series and suggested that India's pace spearhead should feature in the remaining two Tests. 'I would certainly push for Bumrah to play the next game because that's crucial. If he doesn't play and India end up losing the Test, that's it, the series would be done and dusted. Bumrah should feature in both the remaining Tests. 'Yes, he mentioned earlier that he would only play three matches, but there is a long break after this. He does not need to be part of the home series if he wants rest. But right now, Bumrah should be playing the next two,' said Kumble on JioHostar. So far, Bumrah has picked up 12 wickets in just four innings, making him the second-highest wicket-taker in the series behind Mohammed Siraj. During the practice session on Thursday, the Indian team had an injury scare as left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on his bowling hand while trying to stop a ball and was seen with a bandage on. India will now be aiming to bounce back in the fourth Test against England at Manchester, starting on July 23, before the fifth and final match of the series takes place at The Oval in London from July 31 to Aug. 4. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir joined other members of the team in praising veteran left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's incredible performance in the Lord's Test. Though Jadeja hit a valiant 61 not out off 181 balls on final day's play, his fourth successive fifty in Tests, India lost at Lord's by 22 runs and find themselves 2-1 behind in the five-match series against England. 'That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu was absolutely brilliant,' said Gambhir in a video posted on on Friday. Jadeja had shown tremendous grit in keeping India in the hunt for chasing 190. 'As a player in the team, Jaddu bhai is extraordinary in fielding, bowling, and batting. The improvement that has come in batting, he makes runs in every important situation for the team. It's very difficult to find such a player for the team. We are lucky to have such a player in our team,' said fast bowler Siraj. Agencies
