Marcos hopeful for Metro Manila Subway's operations by 2028
Marcos made the remark during the inspection of the Camp Aguinaldo Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project.
''Sana matapos natin ito hanggang sa Valenzuela, baka matapos natin ito '28. Baka puwede nang in-inaugurate sa 2028. Basta tingnan natin,'' Marcos said.
(I hope we can finish until Valenzuela by 2028. Maybe we can inaugurate this by 2028. Let's see.)
''Lahat naman ay nag-a-agree na kailangan bilisan nang mabuti at nang husto dahil ang ating mga commuter... ay para naman maging mas maginhawa ang kanilang pag-commute,'' he added.
(Everyone agrees that we need to hasten this to bring comfort to our commuters.)
The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) CP103 was launched from Camp Aguinaldo Station toward Ortigas Station following a tunnel alignment under Barangay White Plains, Corinthian Properties, and Meralco Compound.
17 stations
As of 30 June, the TBM has advanced 281.74 meters from the launching shaft and has reached the Camp Aguinaldo–White Plains boundary.
The TBM is expected to reach Corinthian Properties by the last quarter of 2025.
Upon its completion, the MMSP will have a total of 17 stations and a 30.34-hectare depot where the Philippine Railway Institute is located.
The project involves the construction of a 33-kilometer railway line that will connect Valenzuela City to Pasay City, with a spur line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.
The MMSP's 17 stations are: Valenzuela where the depot will be located, Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, East Avenue, Anonas, Katipunan (Camp Aguinaldo), Ortigas Avenue, Shaw Boulevard, Kalayaan Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Lawton East, Senate-DepEd, NAIA Terminal 3, FTI, and Bicutan.
The MMSP is also envisioned to be interconnected with other rail systems: the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1), the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3), and the Metro Rail Transit-Line 7 (MRT7) through the Common Station; the Light Rail Transit-Line 2 (LRT2) at the Anonas Station; and a physical run through into the North-South Commuter Railway Extension (NSCR-Ex) at the FTI and Bicutan Stations. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PH hopes to get more US support in improving Coast Guard, Armed Forces
The Philippines is hoping to acquire more aid from the United States when it comes to improving the capabilities of the country's military sector and the Philippine Coast Guard, according to an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). ''Well, in the agenda of the meetings, there's going to be an exchange of views on regional issues and concerns. So, ultimately, this issue on the West Philippine Sea would be discussed,'' DFA Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano said in a briefing. ''And as to the possible agreements, well, we are hoping to secure the assistance or support of the US government in enhancing the capabilities of our AFP and the Coast Guard, in terms of the capabilities of our armed forces,'' she added. Marcos has since developed closer military and defense ties with the US to strengthen the country's external defense. To recall, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a visit to Manila also reaffirmed the Trump administration's "iron-clad" commitment to its obligations under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, which obliges the allies to help defend one another in case of an external attack. Marcos will be leaving Manila for Washington on Sunday, July 20. The cabinet secretaries who will join Marcos include Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro, Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Secretary of Trade and Investments Christina Roque, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, Acting Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick Go, and Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

She mentioned that the steep 20% tariff rate on Filipino goods entering the US would be tackled during the President's bilateral meeting with American counterpart Donald Trump. Solano also said regional issues and concerns would be discussed as well. Aside from Trump, Marcos will have a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 21. Several businesses in the US also expressed their intention to meet with the Philippine leader, Solano said. Marcos will be leaving Manila on Sunday, July 20. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos to seek greater economic cooperation, reaffirm US alliance in Trump meeting
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to expand economic cooperation and reaffirm the Philippines' defense aliiance with the United States when he meets President Donald Trump in Washington next week, as Manila hopes to strike a trade deal with America on a steep 20% tariff rate on Filipino goods entering the US. Ahead of the first Marcos-Trump summit, Manila sent a trade delegation to the US to continue negotiations after the Trump administration increased its tariff on the Philippines to 20% from 17% unless a deal is reached. "President Marcos will visit Washington D.C. on 20-22 July 2025 to reaffirm the Philippines' commitment to its alliance with the US, explore opportunities for greater security and economic cooperation, and discuss regional and international issues of common concern," Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez said in a statement from Washington. Romualdez did not elaborate, but told GMA News Online in a separate message, that "sensitive matters will likely be discussed." Aside from an in-person meeting with Trump, Marcos will have several engagements with key US officials and business leaders during his visit, Romualdez added. Marcos, the first Southeast Asian leader invited by Trump to Washington, will stay at the historic Blair House across the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue during his three-day visit. Heads of states and governments are only invited to the famous guest house "at the pleasure of the President." The famous residence has hosted notable world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela, according to the White House website. The Philippines and US have increased their maritime cooperative activities and joint military exercises and expanded this with like-minded nations, such as Japan and Australia, amid an increasingly assertive China in the South China Sea. Analysts fear that worsening incidents in the waters where the Philippines and China have overlapping claims could spark a major armed confrontation that could involve the US, Manila's defense treaty ally. The US has repeatedly said it would come to the Philippines' aid if Filipino forces, ships or aircraft come under attack anywhere in South China Sea under a 1951 mutual defense treaty. Although not a party to the disputes, Washington declared it is in its national interest to ensure that there is a rule of law and unfettered access to the strategic waters. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
