Charlie Woods Inches Closer To Junior Ryder Cup With Performance at PGA

Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, carded another superb round on Thursday to move into a tie for second place at the Junior PGA Championship with just 18 holes remaining.
The younger Woods now has his sights set not only on winning the biggest title of his young career but also on the chance to make his debut defending the red, white, and blue.
The top two finishers at the Junior PGA Championship automatically qualify for the American team for the Junior Ryder Cup, which will be played Sept. 23-25 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black. It would be Charlie's first experience representing the United States, if he can maintain or improve his current position in the event.
The American team for the Junior Ryder Cup will feature four other boys. One of them is already secured by Hamilton Coleman, who won the US Junior Amateur.

The team will also feature six girls who will qualify and/or be selected following exactly the same criteria as the boys.
This way, Charlie could guarantee his presence on the team this Friday at Purdue University's Ackerman-Allen Course. However, if he doesn't finish in the top two at the Junior PGA Championship, he still has options, although they certainly look less tempting.
Depending on his result in this event and also on the performance of his rivals, Charlie could reach second place in the team's internal rankings and earn his spot this way. He could also impress captain Suzy Whaley enough to decide to select him as her free pick.
The Junior PGA Championship is the last event before the team membership is unveiled. The 12 members will be named next Tuesday, August 5.

There's no doubt that Charlie has proven in recent days that he can play at the highest level. During the third round, he carded nine birdies and four bogeys for a 66, which brought his 36th-hole score to 12-under.
"My round was pretty up and down and it gave me a heart attack out there," Woods told the Journal & Courier. "But nine birdies is pretty good. A couple of three-putts, I made a few mistakes today but overall, pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow."
Charlie is tied for second with Pennson Badgett. They are both seven strokes behind leader Lunden Esterline, who also posted a third-round 66 and has a more than comfortable cushion for the final round.
On the girls' side, superstar Asterisk Talley now leads alone after a third-round 69. Talley holds a two-stroke lead over Zoe Cusack, who was co-leading the day before.

I'll forever be a Juventini.' View this post on Instagram Weah saga ends with move to Marseille Weah has been the subject of much speculation in this transfer window. Earlier in the summer, Weah was reportedly close to a move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest. The English club had submitted a bid for the American forward but the player snubbed the move. Instead, Marseille appeared as suitors and Weah had his heart set on joining Roberto De Zerbi in Ligue 1. Taylor Fritz vs. Ben Shelton best bets: ATP Toronto odds, picks, predictions
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. The tennis calendar is relentless, and can make the sport feel like a bit of a chore at times, but there's nothing quite like it when it peaks. And it will do just that Wednesday night when the two best American players, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, meet in the semifinals of the Canadian Masters in Toronto. This is just the second career meeting between Fritz and Shelton, with the first occurring in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters tournament in March 2023. This match should have a much different feel from that contest, which Fritz won in three sets, as both players have taken massive strides in their respective careers. ATP Toronto: Fritz vs. Shelton odds, predictions Player Odds Taylor Fritz -175 Ben Shelton +137 Odds via bet365 It's no surprise that Fritz is the favorite Wednesday night, given his edge in experience and his higher ranking, but some signals point to this match being closer to a coin flip than even these odds imply. At the beginning of the season, you'd argue that Fritz was a good role model for Shelton in how he could advance his career. Like the latter, the former burst onto the scene thanks to a massive serve, but his all-around game needed to catch up to his best weapon. Eventually, the rest of Fritz's game got to a point where he wasn't too reliant on his serve, and he's shot up the rankings because of that. Taylor Fritz is the betting favorite against Ben Shelton for Wednesday's semifinal. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The Californian is ranked as the No. 4 player in the world (a career best), and has won 19 of his last 22 matches. It's been a banner 2025 campaign for Fritz, though he'd certainly like to add a second Masters title — and first since 2022 — to his mantle. Shelton's career has plenty of similarities to Fritz's, but he seems to be accomplishing things at a quicker pace. The former Florida Gator has established himself as a real threat at Grand Slams, and he's got a couple of titles already under his belt. The 22-year-old still can stand to be more consistent, but he's already solidified himself as a top-10 player, and a little more growth in his game could see him make a push for one of the top four seeds at Grand Slams in 2026. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps With both players in terrific form and no real fitness concerns to worry about, Wednesday's match points to a slobberknocker. Given that both combatants have all-world serves, we'll likely see a tiebreak or two, and that means that this match will likely be decided by a mistake, a break, or a bounce. If that is the case, then the value is with the underdog, Shelton, to come out on top in a long one. Steelers Receiver Gets Wake Up Call From Aaron Rodgers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Pittsburgh Steelers legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers is heading into the final season of his illustrious NFL career. He's hoping to end his career on top of the league with a storybook run to the Super Bowl. In order to make that kind of run, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is going to need the offense to step up around him. Granted, Rodgers is no longer the elite superstar that he once was. However, he's still more than capable of playing at a high level and leading a team to potential contention. Photo byLast season with the New York Jets, Rodgers showed that he still has it. He completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His numbers were still better than many quarterbacks around the league. Read more: Browns HC Makes Major QB Announcement At the top of the Steelers' wide receiver depth chart is DK Metcalf. He was acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade to give Rodgers an elite No. 1 weapon. That being said, there are some major questions at wide receiver behind Metcalf. Currently, Pittsburgh has Calvin Austin II, Robert Woods, and Roman Wilson as its next best options. Those three players could be quality targets for Rodgers, but that is not a proven concept at this point in time. With that in mind, Rodgers spoke out on Wednesday and sent a very pointed message to Wilson. "I need to get Roman out of his own head a bit," Rodgers said. "He cares so much about whether it's my approval or he's doing it right. He's just got to trust himself because he's so damn talented." Obviously, that is not the kind of quote that a young wideout wants to hear from Rodgers. The veteran quarterback has always had some level of frustration with young wide receivers dating back to his time with the Green Bay Packers. Read more: Davante Adams Casts Doubt on Travis Hunter's NFL Future Wilson will need to figure out his issues and play at a high level or risk losing playing time. The Steelers have a one-year window with Rodgers and they will do whatever it takes to compete for a championship in 2025. Perhaps the team could still look into signing a free agent like Amari Cooper. Or, if they choose to stick with the group they've put together, they need Wilson to step up. Right now, it sure doesn't sound like Rodgers is incredibly happy with where his connection is at with the young wideout.
