David Johansen, singer from seminal punk band New York Dolls, dies aged 75
Formed in the early 1970s, the New York Dolls redefined rock and roll, providing the blueprint for British punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, and inspiring the glam-metal movement.
Johansen died "peacefully" at his home in New York City on Friday, his family said.
He was "holding the hands of his wife Mara Hennessey and stepdaughter Leah, in the sunlight surrounded by music and flowers", they added.
Johansen's death comes just weeks after the singer's family said he had stage 4 cancer and a brain tumour.
His daughter Leah shared the diagnosis as she launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover healthcare costs.
Sharing news of the singer's death on the page, his family said: "He was thankful that he had a chance to be in touch with so many friends and family before he passed.
"He knew he was ecstatically loved."
There will be "several events celebrating David's life and artistry" announced in due course, they added.
Johansen began his career as a singer with the Vagabond Missionaries in the late 1960s, before being invited to join the New York Dolls in 1971.
While the band - whose tracks include Personality Crisis and Looking For A Kiss - were critically acclaimed, they never found commercial success and broke up after two albums by the middle of the decade.
Despite their split after just five years, the Dolls' presence in the early punk scene had an undeniable impact on the music world.
More from Sky News:
Shortly after their demise, the band were quoted as a major influence on British bands including The Clash, The Damned and the Sex Pistols - whose deprecating track New York is about the Dolls.
Their style - women's clothes, heavy makeup and teased hair - inspired the glam-metal movement that emerged with acts such as Mötley Crüe a decade later.
Johansen embarked on a solo career after the band split and released albums under both his own name and the pseudonym Buster Poindexter.
In 2004, the band's three surviving members - Johansen, Arthur 'Killer' Kane' and Sylvain Sylvain - reunited and continued performing until 2011.
Johansen is survived by his wife, Mara, and stepdaughter, Leah.

AI Tech Dinners And Sunday Raves: How The Surf Lodge Reinvents Itself
Night life at The Surf Lodge Courtesy of The Surf Lodge DJs blaring music from loudspeakers and people dancing on the beach at The Surf Lodge in Montauk are a common summer experience — except instead of a starry Saturday night it's a bright Sunday morning and people are sipping on smoothies, not cocktails. Some guests are getting IV drips and Vitamin B12 injections while others are lying in cabanas on mats that provide 'Pulsed Electromagnetic Field' therapy. 'I believe in a future where wellness clubs are the new nightclubs,' says Rave Reid of Alchemize House, which hosted the event. 'We want to show that feeling good doesn't have to be super serious and boring.' The Surf Lodge in Montauk ©Greg Kessler/KesslerStudio Late evenings with music and drinks are not disappearing anytime soon, but as The Surf Lodge rounds out its 18th season owner Jayma Cardoso says that staying current takes a lot more than just adding a mocktail section to the menu. 'We're always thinking how do we keep the brand current and think outside the box,' says Cardoso. 'Tourism in Vegas is down 20%. Everyone is drinking less. But people still want to go out and have a great time and I think we've been able to keep our numbers up because of our collaborations. How do I bring different ecosystems into our community and create magic together?' These collaborations go beyond wellness events. Jonah Goodhart is Co-Founder and CEO of Mobian, which is using AI to provide dynamic real-time digital ad buys for companies, matching them with opportunities that past technology has been missing. He's set up 'The Trader's Club' at The Surf Lodge to bring together like-minded people at dinners, both for connecting and having summer fun. 'People may work in the AI world but they still need human experiences,' says Goodhart. 'Jayma has created this intersection of music, food and art and has come up with a magical environment. But what she's really doing is reflecting the culture. So we've got these brilliant tech guys and brilliant visionary hospitality — let's bring them together. Ultimately what we're trying to do is understand culture. And the reaction has been phenomenal.' Jonah Goodhart, founder of Mobian Courtesy of Mobian On a recent Saturday morning Brian Mazza of HPLT Training had guests running from the comfort of The Surf Lodge to a stop sign down the road from the hotel and back, do a series of burpees and squats, and then repeat the series as many times as they could in half an hour — definitely a higher level of intensity workout than a typical class a resort might throw in to assuage some guilt from partying the night before. Mazza sees the partying and fitness going hand in hand. 'These people are chasing different highs,' says Mazza. 'They want to go out and meet people. Hear DJs. Order bottle service. But there's a greater understanding now that to live your best life you have to take care of yourself. That's why I think it's so great what Jayma is doing. Allowing the blend of the late night party and the wellness to come together.' For a collaborator, Brian Mazza is an easy choice — he's established in the fitness industry and recently sold his company to Life Time. But the event with Alchemize House shows Cardoso's willingness to give newer players an opportunity to display their talents. 'Jayma gave us a chance at The Snow Lodge in Aspen to show what we can do. We threw a dinner and a yoga class inside a giant igloo,' says Reid. 'And then we partied with Sofi Tucker! A lot of her events rely on alcohol sales and bottle service. And we got to show that people can party at night but then come again in the morning. There's an opportunity to make money from that as well.' Weekend workout at The Surf Lodge DANIEL RAHAL For Goodhart, throwing dinners with 'The Trader's Club' may bring about some business, but he sees something more valuable happening at The Surf Lodge. 'At the end of the day it's always about the human connections for me,' says Goodhart. 'It's not how many deals you get done at dinner. It's did you have a conversation that changed your life in some positive way. And maybe you don't know something has changed your life until years later. So it's not transactional. It's bringing together people in an elevated environment.' Partnerships like the dinners with 'The Trader's Club' are what Cardoso feels keep The Surf Lodge thriving with new energy while expanding her audience. 'I didn't even know the ad world had AI brokers,' says Cardoso. 'So I'm just like — F ascinating! How do I tap into that and combine it with all the fun things we do in our home? We've had the Obama daughters here. We've had the Trump daughters here. Different politics, but we've remain a place where everyone can coexist.'
