Krispy Kreme is turning 88 and offering you a sweet deal

USA Today5 days ago
Beloved doughnut chain Krispy Kreme turns 88 on Friday, July 18 and is offering customers a sweet deal to celebrate.
The company announced on Tuesday, July 15 it is offering customers a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just 88 cents with the purchase of any dozen at regular price on July 18. There is a limit of two dozen per customer when purchased in-shop and via drive-thru and one dozen when purchased online for pickup or delivery at participating shops while supplies last.
Customers ordering online should use the code "BDAY" to redeem the offer.
"Eighty-eight has never felt and tasted so great,' said Alison Holder, Krispy Kreme Chief Brand and Product Officer, in a news release. 'It's a real joy every year celebrating Krispy Kreme's birthday with our fans and treating them to a special deal. We're so grateful for their love and loyalty.'

The sweet, humble beginnings of Krispy Kreme
According to the news release, Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937 by Vernon Rudolph, who began selling doughnuts to grocery stores.
"Romanced by the irresistible scent of doughnut-making drifting into the streets, passersby asked if they could buy hot, fresh doughnuts," the chain said in a news release. "So, Rudolph cut a hole in an outside wall and began selling Original Glazed doughnuts directly to customers on the sidewalk."
Krispy Kreme, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, now operates in more than 40 countries around the world.
Krispy Kreme unveils superhero doughnuts
The doughnut chain last week unveiled a new doughnut collection with a heroic twist.
The doughnut chain announced on Tuesday, July 8, its "Hungry for Heroes" collection in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery. The collection includes three new doughnuts celebrating DC Comics' most iconic heroes: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
The doughnuts are available individually and in a custom-designed dozen's box beginning July 8 and for a limited time at participating U.S. shops. Customers can purchase the collection in-shop, for pickup or delivery via Krispy Kreme's app and website.
'We can't promise you'll reach Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman level by bringing a dozen doughnuts to the office or your next get-together, but you will be a hero,' said Dave Skena, Chief Growth Officer at Krispy Kreme, in a news release.
Also, from July 24-27, coinciding with San Diego Comic-Con, the doughnut chain will offer all customers who show their appreciation for their favorite DC superhero while visiting participating shops nationwide one free Hungry for Heroes doughnut with any purchase, while supplies last.
According to Krispy Kreme, customers can show their love by wearing merch, sharing their enthusiasm or presenting a movie ticket to redeem the offer.

The Staggering Amount Of Unspent Money Left On Starbucks Gift Cards

Starbucks got its start in 1971 and never looked back. Now there are over 21,000 locations around the world. Many people love the coffee chain so much that they know everything from how Starbucks got its name to the most expensive drink on the menu. What people don't know is that Starbucks doesn't just profit off selling you coffee, it also profits from selling you the idea of coffee. Starbucks reported that in Q3 of 2022, there was 1.77 billion dollars left unredeemed on gift cards. The company also reported a breakage revenue of 196.1 million dollars for company-operated stores and 18.9 million dollars in licensed-store revenue. With the company's evolution in the Starbucks app, many of these balances are completely digital, so the coffee giant doesn't even print out a physical gift card, thus saving even more money and making more in profit — sometimes without actually selling any coffee. Starbucks incentivizes its customer base to preload funds onto the app by dangling rewards in front of them. Sure, you could pay with a debit or credit card, ynou could even use cash and simply have the app scanned at checkout, but you'll only get one gold star per dollar spent for doing so. If you preload money onto the Starbucks app and use that balance toward ordering your drink, you'll get two gold stars per dollar spent. Read more: Discontinued Frosty Flavors That Deserve A Comeback And 2 That Should Stay In The Past The Bank Of Starbucks The Starbucks app operates on a model similar to that of a bank. Banks allow people and businesses to store money which the bank then pays them interest on. Banks pay you for storing money with them because it allows them to use the money placed in accounts for other purposes. Starbucks doesn't pay interest on the money stored on its app, but the company can still use that money before you redeem it (if you ever bother to redeem it at all). Unused funds make up about 10% of all of the money in the "Bank of Starbucks." This 10% is still considered revenue for the company. The amount of money flowing through the Starbucks app at any given time is more than some banks. So when you load money onto the Starbucks app or buy someone a cute plastic gift card, Starbucks keeps all of that money, whether you get a coffee or not. If the drink you order is 10 cents less than the dollar amount you load on the card, Starbucks gets an additional ten cents of revenue for absolutely nothing. This small amount adds up quickly amongst their vast customer base and is a subtle way of charging customers more. Some customers still use other forms of payment, but to be a better Starbucks customer and get more gold stars, you're incentivized to load that balance. 'Thumbnail Testing' a New Play at Warner Bros Discovery (NASDAQ:WBD) Stock Slips

A little profit-taking to close out the week at entertainment giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD)? That is not out of line, especially after yesterday's 52-week high hit. It certainly explains why investors took the news of Warner's new plan to start thumbnail testing is meeting with seemingly modest disapproval. Shares are down fractionally in the closing minutes of Friday's trading. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Reports note that Warner plans to start doing A/B testing on photo thumbnails used on HBO Max, a development that one of its biggest rivals, Netflix (NFLX), has already been engaged in for most of the last decade. Essentially, the project will show users several different thumbnail images for a particular video, or set of videos. Then, the system will be able to track which thumbnail displayed ended up with the most user engagement. The testing will be done with the most popular titles in Warner's stable at first, reports note, but then will expand outward from there. By the end of 2026's first half, almost all of the catalog should be using A/B testing on thumbnails. For now, humans will be handling thumbnail construction, but in the future, that job will be artificial intelligence's baby, reports note. Updates on DCU Movies With Warner's Superman win still ringing in its collective ears, attention turned to two of the other major properties in its arsenal. Namely, the two other founding members of the Justice League: Batman, with the upcoming The Brave and the Bold, and an as-yet-untitled Wonder Woman movie. The bad news, for those eager to catch the latest comic book outings, is that these two will be a while in coming. The scripts are still being written, and shooting cannot begin until the scripts are actually ready to go, as DC Studios CEO James Gunn noted. While the news of further waiting is not pleasant, it is comforting to note that Warner seems focused on giving the creative team the time it needs to properly incubate titles and bring out quality product. Is WBD Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on WBD stock based on 10 Buys and eight Holds assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 48.1% rally in its share price over the past year, the average WBD price target of $13 per share implies 1.76% upside potential.
