Snowdan to step down as PRS Youth chief after nine-year tenure

Snowdan speaks to reporters after the Supreme Council meeting yesterday.
KUCHING (April 26): Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan has confirmed he will not be defending his post at the party's upcoming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC), marking the end of his nine-year leadership of the youth wing.
Speaking to reporters after the PRS Supreme Council meeting at the party's headquarters yesterday, Snowdan said the decision had already been conveyed to the PRS Youth exco.
'Whether there is a contest or not, I've made a very clear stand to the Supreme Council—I will not defend my post as the Youth chief. It's enough for me,' he said.
Snowdan, who has served three consecutive terms, said it would be unfair to remain in the position when others are ready to take over.
'I've been Youth chief for nine years. That's too long, I've overstayed,' he said.
He noted that leaders in other parties had not remained in their youth posts for as long, citing the example of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
'Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Miro Simuh of PBB served only one term,' he said, adding that the current PBB Youth chief is Datuk Martin Ben.
Snowdan did not rule out contesting other positions in the party's leadership structure but maintained the importance of leadership renewal in the youth wing.
He also revealed that the party is currently engaging its grassroots to gauge whether there should be an open contest or a consensus in deciding party leadership ahead of the TDC in October.
'We need to consult each division to see whether they prefer an open contest or a consensus,' he said, adding that the feedback will be deliberated in a special committee meeting before July.
While noting that some members are in favour of a compromise, Snowdan said the party's unity and stability must come first.
A final decision will be presented to the Supreme Council for discussion and evaluation, ensuring grassroots input is taken into account in shaping the party's future direction.

Yeoh congratulates Chong Wei on BAM appointment

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei yesterday on his appointment as Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) council member. She added that his presence in the council was a moment she has looked forward to since she began her term as minister in 2022. "I believe Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has much to contribute to the development of badminton in Malaysia and he shouldn't just be at the fringes of BAM. "His presence has helped us in the National Sports Council and the Road to Gold (RTG) programme, which I deeply appreciate, but I'm optimistic that when a former athlete leads in a national sports association, it will spur excitement, instill confidence and accuracy in decisions and policies of the association," she posted on Facebook. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had previously announced Chong Wei's appointment along with three corporate figures, Employees Provident Fund director Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon, former NTV7 chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly and lawyer Datuk Sunil Abraham, as new BAM council members.

Warning against buying aged military assets

PETALING JAYA: His Majesty the King of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim has issued a stern warning to the Defence Ministry not to repeat past mistakes in procuring used military assets that may compromise the safety of military personnel. Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas at Kem Iskandar in Mersing yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim cited the country's purchase of second-hand A-4 Skyhawk jets from the United States in the 1980s, which were eventually retired due to a high accident rate. 'Don't make the same mistake. Are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? Think for yourselves.' The King urged Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to cancel a proposed procurement of more than 30-year-old Black Hawk helicopters, warning that decisions based on the influence of agents or vested interests could endanger lives and waste public funds. 'I believe this keeps happening because the ministry is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, even textile traders trying to sell drones.' The Royal Malaysian Air Force had acquired 80 units of the A-4 Skyhawk, developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), from the United States in 1982 at US$1 million each. His Majesty emphasised the need for transparency and cost-efficiency in all defence acquisitions, while calling out past purchases made at inflated prices. He cited the example of a rigid raiding craft bought for RM5 million, saying a better vessel could have been sourced for under RM2 million. 'Do not waste money on items that don't meet military needs. If you don't know the market price, ask me.' The King also criticised the delay in completing Rejimen Gerak Khas' combat diving pool and urged the government to prioritise operational readiness with appropriate and timely equipment upgrades.

Ipoh Sentral: Priority For Recreational Park To Open Before Commercial Projects

IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The developer of the Ipoh Sentral project site has been reminded to complete the construction of a recreational park first before developing any commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the construction of the recreational park is among the first phase in construction plans for the Ipoh Sentral project which is expected to be completed within a year. He said the condition was set by the government to ensure that local people experience the benefits of development in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. "We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition ... we have to deliver the recreational park to the local community first before they can pursue profits even though this park brings no financial gain to the developer. "What is the point of this development if the local people cannot enjoy it. For the people of Perak, especially those in Ipoh, I have set a condition for the developer, that within six to 12 months, we want to deliver the first phase of this recreational park to be open to the public. So the developer must remember this as one of the key conditions,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral project here today. The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim together with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and was also attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Loke said the project, which is located adjacent to the Ipoh train station, will be developed using the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept by integrating rail, bus, taxi and e-hailing services, and pedestrian and cycling lanes. 'This development concept is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the National Transport Master Plan, and supports the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) which makes TOD the key driver of urban growth. 'This approach promotes sustainable lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, concentrates development around stations and transport hubs, and strengthens the role of public transport as one of the people's main choices,' he said.
