Ukraine's Zelenskyy avoids Trump mauling at White House. Will he get Putin meeting?
President Donald Trump wants Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia's Vladimir Putin to hold direct peace talks. Will it happen? With a little help from his European friends, an outfit that resembled a suit instead of his trademark T-shirt, a hand-delivered letter from his wife for First Lady Melania Trump and a volley of ingratiating "thank yous," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy avoided the public mauling he received during his previous visit to the White House. But will it lead to the next apparent step toward peace with Russia? A meeting with President Vladmir Putin. President Donald Trump seems to think so. "I think he wants to make a deal. I think he wants to make a deal for me," Trump was caught on a hot mic saying to French President Emmanual Macron, referring to Putin, as he prepared to sit down on Aug. 18 with Macron and six other European leaders who had traveled to Washington to shore up support for Zelenskyy and Ukraine. Zelenskyy gets warmer reception: Takeaways from high stakes Trump meeting Many Ukrainians, European officials and political scientists questioned Trump's commitment to Ukraine after he rolled out the red carpet for Putin in Alaska on Aug. 15. After their summit concluded, Trump echoed Russia''s position on peace negotiations and appeared to put his threat to impose onerous sanctions on Russia on the shelf. In Washington, Trump told Zelenskyy the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war, though the extent of any promised assistance was not immediately clear. He also appeared to dismiss the need for any ceasefire, a key demand of Ukraine, before peace negotiations can start. It remains wholly unclear if Ukraine would be willing to cede territory stolen by Russia before and during the war to achieve peace. Zelenskyy's been saying since 2022, when Russia's full-scale invasion began, that land-for-peace is a non-starter. Waiting on Putin Still, the Putin factor may be cloudier than all of these unknowns. Following Monday's meeting, Trump said he called Putin. It was around midnight Moscow time, according to Yuri Ushakov, a Russian foreign policy advisor whose remarks were published in state media. They spoke for about 40 minutes. In a post on his Truth Social media platform, Trump said he called Putin to start arranging talks between Russia's leader and Zelenskyy. He said he wanted to see Putin and Zelenskyy hold face-to-face talks, in a location to be determined. After that, Trump would join Putin and Zelenskyy for a discussion aimed at pushingthe two warring sides closer together. Zelenskyy changed his attire: Key moments from White House meeting with Trump Zelenskyy described the talks with Trump as the "best" so far. Trump said they were "very good." German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signaled the meeting might happen within the next two weeks. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Geneva as a possible location. The plan for direct talks sounds straightforward. It may not be, according to Phillips O'Brien, a historian and professor of strategic war studies at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. O'Brien has closely tracked the war in a daily newsletter. On Aug. 19, O'Brien wrote that the Putin-Zelenskyy "may or may not happen." For a start, for more than three years Moscow has repeatedly nixed the idea of a Putin-Zelenskyy sit-down. The two leaders are bitter enemies. Putin, by all accounts, runs an inscrutable if strongman geopolitical playbook. Trump's own relationship with both Putin and Zelenskyy has been winding, running hot, then cool, then hot. Overnight Russian attack: Ukraine says it shows Putin does not want peace Moscow itself did not shed any immediate clarifying light. "The idea was discussed that it would be worthwhile to explore the possibility of raising the level of representatives from the Ukrainian and Russian sides − that is, those representatives participating in the mentioned direct negotiations," Ushakov, the Kremlin aide, said in reaction to the proposed Putin-Zelenskyy meeting that would subsequently feature Trump, in remarks posted on the Kremlin's Telegram channel.

USA TODAY Sports puts Nebraska at No. 21 in 2025 College Football Re-Rank
USA TODAY Sports released its College Football Re-Rank for the 2025 season, taking a look at all 136 FBS teams and determining the appropriate rankings ahead of the first game of the season. According to the re-rankings, Nebraska is now ranked No. 21 on the list. The Huskers finished last season 7-6, earning their first trip to a bowl game since 2016 and taking down Boston College 20-15 in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. Although it marked Nebraska's best season since 2016, the team, which finished above .500, fell just short of the final top 25. The Huskers received 23 votes in the AP Top 25 poll and 19 votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. But USA TODAY Sports placed Nebraska at No. 21, becoming one of seven Big Ten teams to find itself in the top 25 at the start of 2025. The list also includes ten from the SEC, three from the Big 12, three from the ACC, Boise State of the Mountain West, and Notre Dame, which remains independent. The top of USA TODAY Sports' preseason rankings aligns with the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Bowl Projections also vary for the Huskers heading into the season, with ESPN projecting Nebraska to play in the SRS Distribution Bowl while CBS Sports projected the team to head to the ReliaQuest Bowl. Regardless of the rankings, the Huskers enter the season with high expectations. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.

Wisconsin quarterback commit to lead the top team in the country in 2025
Mater Dei (CA), Duncanville (TX) and North Crowley (TX) headline the updated National High School Football Top 25 via Massey Ratings👀Thoughts? ⬇️Read: Massey Ratings released their National High School Football top 25 for the upcoming football season early Monday morning, with Mater Dei (California) leading the way. As Badger fans may know, class of 2026 quarterback commit Ryan Hopkins is Mater Dei's starting quarterback this fall, seemingly in line for a successful senior year with the program. Hopkins committed to the Badgers in mid-April, choosing them over Missouri, Cal, and Duke. He remains verbally committed to Wisconsin even with new offers rolling in. The most recent of which came from the in-state UCLA Bruins, who joined his offer sheet on Saturday. These kinds of offers will likely continue to roll in until the early signing period in December. Still, head coach Luke Fickell and the rest of the Badgers staff seem confident that they will retain him. Hopkins and Mater Dei's season begins on Aug. 23 against St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
