Ex-pilot called himself messiah on climate-change mission, day before alleged hijack
A 39-year-old man with the same name has now been charged with hijacking, constituting terrorism, over the incident on Tuesday that saw Norad scramble F-15 fighter jets before the light plane safely landed.
RCMP say the suspect had an "ideological motive" and allegedly seized control of the plane at Victoria International Airport after threatening a flight instructor, before flying to Vancouver.
Images posted on social media depicting the arrest of the Cessna's pilot on the north runway of YVR show a bearded man who resembles climate activist Cassim.
In his Facebook post on Monday, Cassim says he's the "messiah sent to save humanity from climate change and usher in an era of world peace."
He warns of "abrupt runaway global warming" that will cause humans to go extinct within a few years.
In 2012, Cassim held a news conference before going on a cross-country bicycle ride to raise awareness for global warming.
His Facebook profile says he was employed from 2008 to 2010 by now-defunct KD Air, a small airline based on Vancouver Island.
The airline's former owners, Diana and Lars Banke, said in an interview that Cassim was one of the smartest and best pilots they ever worked with, calling him a fast learner who was highly intelligent.
But Lars Banke said Cassim left the airline after getting "bored" and then went to medical school. He also said Cassim believed the world was coming to an end.
Diana Banke said she was "very surprised" to hear of Cassim's charges, saying he was quite young when he worked for them and was "like a kid."
"Something would (have to) be going on that's not normal," Lars Banke said. "He was, I would say, a caring person."
Diana Banke said she remembered Cassim "doing a really long bicycle trek," and that he brought a dog along with him.
Lars Banke said he recalled that Cassim was somewhat interested in environmentalism, but he was unaware of any kind of religious beliefs.
"He never spoke religion with us," Diana Banke said.
Cassim's online posts include musings on religion, climate science, and advocacy for tolerance and peace, including a claim "the Angel Gabriel appeared before me and gave me a message from Allah."
"I'm really surprised that he would've done something like this," Diana Banke said.
His Facebook profile says Cassim attended high school in Lloydminster, Alta., before studying aviation at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
He also describes himself as the editor of a blog devoted to the impact of climate change on the Arctic. It includes hundreds of posts since 2011, many of them highly technical, with the latest entry made on Saturday.
It is titled: "Will humans go extinct soon?"

Major overhaul flagged for Aussie childcare
The Federal Government's top lawyer is vowing 'action' on a national Working With Children check system following allegations of sexual abuse at a Melbourne childcare centre. Earlier this month, Victoria Police revealed it charged Joshua Dale Brown, 26, with more than 70 offences, including child rape and possession of child abuse material. He was a worker at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre in Point Cook and had a working with children check. The alleged abuse has stoked outrage, prompting Attorney-General Michelle Rowland to respond by saying a national system was the 'first item on the agenda' when she meets with state and territory counterparts. 'This is something we are actively doing now,' she told Sky News on Sunday. 'I've been in direct contact with my counterparts … engaging with them about the need to have reform in this area.' Ms Rowland said many would be 'shocked' to learn this was actually a recommendation coming out of a 2015 series of responses on the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse. 'We're now in 2025. What is important here is that we have action,' Mr Rowland said. 'The federal government has not been idle. 'We have been undertaking work to ensure that we do have some mechanisms that are in place.' Currently, Working With Children checks take place at a state and territory level. States and territories do not need to talk to each other about their processes or violations and there is no federal oversight. Ms Rowland said was working 'to ensure that we have a solution that allows near real time reporting, access to data, making sure that we've got consistency and uniformity'.Meanwhile, Education Minister Jason Clare has pledged to introduce legislation that would let Canberra cut federal funds to childcare centres that 'aren't up to scratch' on children's safety. He has said funding was one big lever the federal government could pull. Parliament will resume next week for the first time since the federal election.

Police ID suspect, 14, in fatal stabbing of woman in North York parking lot
Toronto police have identified the suspect in the fatal stabbing of a woman in a North York parking lot on Thursday. Kymani Wint, 14, of Toronto, is wanted for second-degree murder, police said in a news release on Friday. Police obtained judicial authorization to name him and release photos of him because he is a young person whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Wint is wanted for an "unprovoked" attack on Shahnaz Pestonji, 71, of Toronto, on Thursday at about 9:37 a.m. in the area of Parkway Forest Drive and Sheppard Avenue E. Police believe that the incident was "a robbery that escalated into a deadly attack," Det. Matthew Pinfold, of police's homicide and missing persons unit, told reporters at a news conference on Friday. Pestonji was loading groceries into her car when she was attacked, police have said. When officers arrived, they found her with stab wounds. She was taken to hospital, where she died. Police have conducted an "extensive and urgent" search since the stabbing, Pinfold said. Officers have been canvassing door-to-door, using canine units and drones, and have been reviewing surveillance video from the area and from the TTC. Wint was identified as a result of that work, he added. "I want to be very clear — do not approach this individual. He is considered dangerous," Pinfold said. "We are asking the public and TTC riders to be alert and stay aware of their surroundings." Pinfold had a message for Wint too: "I am directing you to turn yourself in immediately. We are actively looking for you and we will find you." Pinfold said police believe Wint is using the TTC to travel and was last seen on Thursday at Kennedy subway station at about noon. He may still be on the transit system, he said. Pinfold released an updated description of Wint. He is said to be about five foot seven, 135 pounds, with a skinny build, wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt with "New York - 555" on the front in white lettering. Wint has been seen wearing a balaclava-style face covering with his hood up, and carrying a black satchel. He has his hood up most of the time. If anyone sees him, or someone matching his description, of if anyone has information about his whereabouts, they are being urged to call 911 immediately.
