BE WTR and Rosewood Abu Dhabi partner to launch Abu Dhabi's first circular, automatic, water bottling plant at Rosewood Abu Dhabi
The launch event, which took place at Majlis by Pierre Hermé in Rosewood Abu Dhabi, brought together key government officials, industry leaders and sustainability advocates. Mike Hecker, CEO & Founder of BE WTR, and Remus Palimaru, Managing Director of Rosewood Abu Dhabi, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling the BiG 1500, a fully automated, state of the art glass bottling designed to support a zero-waste, plastic-free future, saving more than 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
In the keynote speech, Mike Hecker, CEO & Founder of BE WTR stated: ' We are very proud to inaugurate Abu Dhabi's first circular bottling plant. It is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Our BiG 1500 system, capable of producing up to 1,500 bottles of locally sourced, filtered water per hour, ensures that guests receive the highest quality still or sparkling water while significantly reducing environmental impact. This technology embodies our vision for a zero-waste, plastic-free future in the hospitality industry.'
Azamat Kokov, Group CFO & Head of GCC at BE WTR said: 'By launching this plant with Rosewood Abu Dhabi, we are proving that high-end hospitality and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. In a country committed to ambitious sustainability goals, this initiative redefines how luxury hotels source and serve water, benefiting both guests and the planet.'
Located within Rosewood Abu Dhabi, the facility will provide locally sourced still and sparkling water to Rosewood Abu Dhabi on Al Maryah Island, eliminating the carbon footprint associated with transporting bottled water over long distances. The move directly supports the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategy and its push toward a circular economy.

The newly installed BE WTR BiG 1500, purifies, filters and bottles local water at a speed of 1500 bottles per hour with no human contact, ensuring the highest hygiene and quality standards. Serving both F&B outlets as well as in rooms and banqueting its impact includes: Eliminating 1.5 million single-use plastic bottles annually
Saving over 1,000 tons of CO2 per year by reducing transportation emissions
Providing reusable glass bottles that can be refilled more than 300 times
Showing Rosewood stewardship on sustainability and guest experience
BE WTR's commitment to sustainability is recognized globally, with the company aligning with nine of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and being B Corp certified. Currently BE WTR has 20 bottling plants and the brand's bottling lines operate on a zero-plastic, zero-waste, carbon-neutral model, reshaping how water is served in luxury environments and top restaurants

Spain Evacuates Over 1000 People as Wildfires Threaten UNESCO Heritage Site
Rana Atef Spanish authorities announced Monday the evacuation of more than 1,000 people in the country's northwest, as wildfires threatened a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to Swiss radio Lac, around 400 residents were displaced from Carucedo and surrounding areas, along with 700 more from nearby towns close to Las Médulas, which is an ancient Roman gold-mining region. The site is well known for its striking red rock formations and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wildfires have also been reported in Galicia (northwest) and Navarre (north). Spain is in the second week of a heatwave, with temperatures reaching close to 40°C in many regions. From tonight through August 12, the Colombian-born head chef of Dubai's Michelin-starred 11 Woodfire joins WHEN WE EAT and Ramla's Signature Dinner Series - a gathering that brings world-class chefs to one of Egypt's most striking dining rooms. Ramla's long tables stretch beneath the open sky, the hum of conversation folding into the rhythm of the waves. Moros's style is rooted in clean, honest plates, where ingredients take the lead and flame becomes a storyteller. 'Barbecuing or grilling is a worldwide culture,' he said. 'Every culture has its own ingredients, its own spices. This allows me to experiment, to explore different traditions and combine flavours.'His week began with a trip to the camel market - heat pressing in, the scent of hay in the air - a moment that would follow him into the kitchen. 'It completely blew my mind. You start cooking with intention. It's not only about creating dishes, but about transmitting feelings.'Over the next three nights, each course will carry something of that intention: a trace of Colombia, a nod to the markets and spices of Egypt, and the unifying warmth of woodfire. Gold Rises Locally and Globally Amid U.S. Tariff Dispute on Swiss Bullion
Waleed Farouk Gold prices in the local market posted modest gains over the past week, in tandem with a rise in global spot prices, as the international market experienced sharp volatility following reports that the United States would impose tariffs on imported gold bullion—news later officially denied by the U.S. administration. Gold rose by 0.4%, with 21-karat gaining EGP 20 over the week, climbing from EGP 4,600 to EGP 4,620 per gram. In contrast, global spot gold recorded gains of about 1%, advancing from $3,363 to $3,397 per ounce. The price of 24-karat gold reached EGP 5,280, 18-karat stood at EGP 3,960, and 14-karat at EGP 3,080, while the gold pound coin was priced at around EGP 36,960. Confusion over the U.S. stance on tariffs for Swiss bullion remains a key factor influencing market sentiment, with any new developments likely to quickly impact local prices. On July 31, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency issued a letter stating that imports of gold bullion in one-kilogram and 100-ounce sizes would not be exempt from tariffs, subjecting them to a 39% import duty from Switzerland—the world's largest gold refining hub. The decision shocked the markets, disrupted global supply chains, and threatened around $24 billion of Swiss gold exports to the U.S. The move prompted some Swiss refineries to suspend or reduce shipments. While the White House dismissed the reports as 'misleading' and pledged to issue an executive order to clarify the situation, market anxiety persisted. Gold futures in New York spiked to $3,534 per ounce before retreating to $3,497, while prices in London remained largely steady, widening the spread between the two markets to more than $100. Analysts warn that a sustained gap could reshape global gold flows and diminish the appeal of the COMEX exchange to international investors. High-purity bullion imported from Switzerland is used to back financial contracts traded on COMEX, meaning any customs restrictions pose a direct threat to the market's infrastructure. Christoph Wild, President of the Swiss Precious Metals Producers and Traders Association, described the tariffs as 'a new slap' to trade relations with the U.S., warning of their impact on the market's ability to meet rising global demand. On the economic front, weak U.S. data bolstered market bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by 25 basis points at its September meeting, after the nonfarm payrolls report showed a slowdown in hiring and the ISM services index indicated contraction in the sector. However, inflation remains the key factor: the prices-paid index in the services sector rose to its highest level since November 2022, potentially keeping the Fed in a balancing act between controlling inflation and supporting employment. Next week's data releases include the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, retail sales, jobless claims, and speeches from several Fed officials.
