James Webb Space Telescope sees a celestial Venn diagram around a dying star

A stunning new image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is allowing astronomers to examine the complex and turbulent final stages of a dying star's life.
The snapshot above showcases NGC 1514, a planetary nebula that resides roughly 1,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. Despite the term, however, NGC 1514 has nothing to do with planets. Instead, at its heart, there are two stars.
These stars appear as a single point of light in the James Webb Space Telescope's view, and this point of light is encircled by an arc of orange dust. Of particular interest to astronomers is the nebula's faint, Venn-diagram-like structure — two rings of ejected material shaped by the gravitational influence of the central stars. Scientists say the rings offer a unique opportunity to dissect the complex interplay of stellar outflow over eons.
"Before Webb, we weren't able to detect most of this material, let alone observe it so clearly," Mike Ressler, a project scientist for the JWST's MIRI instrument who discovered the rings in 2010 using a different NASA telescope, said in a statement. "With MIRI's data, we can now comprehensively examine the turbulent nature of this nebula."
Previous observations of the binary system showed that the nine-year orbit of these two stars is one of the longest known for any planetary nebula. Astronomers suspect the nebula's formation was primarily driven by the more massive of the two stars. As that star aged, it likely underwent a dramatic expansion, shedding layers of gas and dust through its stellar wind and leaving behind a hot, compact core known as a white dwarf.
The faster, weaker winds emanating from this white dwarf likely swept up the earlier, slower-moving material, forming clumpy, filamentary rings that are extremely faint and only visible in infrared light, according to the statement. The JWST's view also reveals a network of holes close to the central stars where faster-moving material punched through the slower, denser outer layers of ejected gas and dust.
"When this star was at its peak of losing material, the companion star could have come exceptionally close," David Jones, a senior scientist at the Institute of Astrophysics on the Canary Islands, who proved there is a binary star system at the center of this planetary nebula in 2017, said in the statement. "That interaction can lead to shapes that you wouldn't expect — instead of producing a sphere, this interaction might have formed these rings."
The two rings appear unevenly illuminated and textured in the JWST's data, likely composed of very small dust grains that are slightly heated by ultraviolet light emanating from the central white dwarf.
"When those grains are hit by ultraviolet light from the white dwarf star, they heat up ever so slightly, which we think makes them just warm enough to be detected by Webb in mid-infrared light," Ressler said in the statement.
The JWST's observations also detected oxygen in the nebula's clumpy pink center, but carbon as well as complex molecules like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — typically expected in such nebulas — were notably absent. According to the statement, the long orbital period of the central binary stars may be responsible, as the extended orbit could have stirred the expelled material, preventing the formation of these more complex compounds.

The remarkable detail provided by observations like these has made the $10 billion JWST, NASA's largest and most powerful space telescope, more in demand than ever before, with astronomers requesting the equivalent of nine years' worth of observing time with the telescope in one operational year. This intense demand comes at a challenging time, however, as the JWST faces potential budget cuts of up to 20% despite being only halfway through its primary mission. These cuts, expected to take effect later this year, would impact all aspects of the observatory's work, from proposal reviews and data analysis to anomaly resolution and community engagement.
"Frankly, this mission works far better than, really, most folks expected it to, you know," Tom Brown, who leads the JWST mission office at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, had told scientists during a town hall event in January at the annual American Astronomical Society conference. "It's extremely worrisome that, while we're in the middle of the prime mission, we're also maybe looking at significant budget cuts."

The James Webb Space Telescope has returned to the scene of one of the Hubble Space Telescope's most iconic images, the Ultra Deep Field, to capture galaxies throughout cosmic history. This new image was taken as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), which is intent on further probing in infrared light two patches of sky that were originally imaged by Hubble: the Hubble Deep Field (1995) and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (2004). The deep fields were Hubble's most intense stares into the universe, revealing the faintest galaxies at the highest redshifts that Hubble could see, galaxies that existed over 13 billion years ago and whose light has been traveling for all that time. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, in particular, was revisited several times by Hubble, in 2009, 2012 and 2014, using the near-infrared channels on the space telescope's Wide Field Camera 3. It shows some 10,000 galaxies detectable in an area of sky just 2.4 arcminutes square, which is less than a tenth of the diameter of the Full Moon in the night sky. However, Hubble can only see so far. At the greatest redshifts, corresponding to galaxies that we see as they existed within a few hundred million years of the Big Bang, visible light is stretched into infrared wavelengths beyond Hubble's capacity to see. So, to beat this limitation, the JWST has stepped up. The giant 6.5-meter space telescope got its first good look at the Hubble Ultra Deep Field in October 2022 with its Near-Infrared Camera. It has revisited the Ultra Deep Field several times, as part of the JADES project, and this latest image was captured by the JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS for short). Indeed, the instrument's shortest-wavelength filter (F560W, which detects infrared light from 4.9 to 6.4 microns, centered on 5.6 microns) took the longest exposure of any single filter as part of this image, totaling 41 hours. The image doesn't show the entirety of the Ultra Deep Field, only a section of it containing about 2,500 visible galaxies, four-fifths of them being truly distant, high redshift galaxies. None are record-breakers — the maximum redshifts visible are about 12, equating to 380 million years after the Big Bang, or 13.4 billion years ago. Just to compare, the current highest redshift galaxy, MoM-z14 (which is not part of the Ultra Deep Field), has a redshift of 14.4 and we see it as it existed about 280 million years after the Big Bang. When coupled with data from JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) that operates at shorter wavelengths (1.9 to 4.8 microns), the observations reveal a great deal about the many galaxies in the image, most of which are visible as small dots of light. The image is presented in false color, since infrared light has no visible colors since it is beyond what the human eye can see. Hundreds of red galaxies in the image are either star-forming galaxies that are shrouded by interstellar dust that absorbs the starlight and re-radiates it in infrared, or are highly evolved galaxies with lots of older, redder stars that formed near the beginning of the universe. Meanwhile, the small greenish-white galaxies are those that are at very high redshift, meaning we see them as they exist mostly during the first billion years of cosmic history. On the other hand, the larger blue and cyan galaxies are closer with low-redshifts and so appear brighter to NIRCam than to MIRI. A robot posing as a tough male crab recently challenged real crabs to a showdown during mating season — and the videos are hilarious. The robot, nicknamed "Wavy Dave," infiltrated fiddler crab (Afruca tangeri) communities on the mudflats of southern Portugal and participated in claw-waving contests, during which males wave one oversized claw to attract females. However, Wavy Dave's mission had problems from the get-go, a new study revealed. "The females realised he was a bit odd, and some of the males tried to fight him," study first author Joe Wilde, a statistician and modeler in ecology and environmental science at Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland, said in a statement. "One male broke Wavy Dave by pulling off his claw. We had to abandon that trial and reboot the robot." Claw waving is an important part of fiddler crab reproduction. If a male successfully attracts a female during these displays, then the female enters the male's burrow and allows him to fertilize her eggs, so the stakes are high. Despite the claw-breaking incident, Wavy Dave proved to be enough of a contender that researchers gained insight into how male crabs respond to rivals. The researchers published their findings Wednesday (Aug. 6) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences. However, less is known about how animals respond to changes in their rivals' signaling behavior, according to the study. Wilde used a 3D printer to create a model of a fiddler crab, and then built Wavy Dave's claw-waving mechanism. The robot crab had two interchangeable claw options for its display — one average length and one large — and was controlled from a mobile app using Bluetooth. The researchers put their robot to the test on the crab-filled mudflats of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Female fiddler crabs typically select males who have larger claws and who wave their claws quickly, according to the statement. When Wavy Dave was around, the researchers found that rival males waved for longer but not faster. In the study, the researchers speculated that the males assumed a female was present because of Wavy Dave, but they waited to actually see the female before going all out with their own display. Furthermore, the real crabs were less likely to compete if their robot rival had a larger claw, potentially sensing the contest was a lost cause or were wary of being attacked, according to the study. The study's findings suggested that male crabs change their behavior in response to what their rivals are doing, investing more energy when they've got a greater chance of success. "If you own a shop and your rivals start selling things really cheaply, you might have to change how you run your business," Wilde said. "The same might be true for males signalling to attract females — and our study suggests males do indeed respond to competition. Our findings reveal the subtle ways in which these crabs adjust their behaviour to compete in a dynamic environment, investing more in signalling when it is likely to be most profitable."
