With growing disposable income, middle class is embracing cruise: Sarbananda Sonowal
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal says a five-fold surge in cruise passengers in India over the past decade has been fuelled by rising disposable incomes, a growing appetite for premium travel experiences and a greater awareness of cruise tourism. Edited excerpts from an interview with Shantanu Nandan Sharma: How realistic is the government's target of doubling the number of cruise passengers from about half a million now to 1 million by 2029? This shows a growth of almost 500% in just 11 years, also reflecting on the future growth potential in the sector. In FY2024-25, 93 international cruise vessels called at Indian ports. This huge growth has happened due to the concerted efforts of the government to provide a very good cruise tourism ecosystem in the country by bringing about changes in the policy that was dormant for decades, providing financial and tax incentives, adopting international best practices, creating cruise infrastructure, including world-class cruise terminals, and various other cruise-tourism friendly measures. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Have you noticed the trend of more upper middle-class Indians experiencing cruise tourism now? Cruise tourism is gaining strong traction among India's upper middle class segment. Growing disposable income at the hand of a burgeoning middle and upper middle class is enabling them to increasingly embrace cruise as a preferred leisure choice. This surge is driven by rising disposable incomes, growing aspirations for premium travel experiences and increased awareness of cruise holidays. The Maritime India Vision 2030 projects an eightfold expansion of the Indian cruise market by 2030, citing increasing demand from the middle and upper middle classes. Live Events But does India have enough new-age cruise terminals? There are six cruise terminals in Mumbai Port, Cochin, New Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Goa. The Mumbai Port international cruise terminal has been recently renovated, and the upgrade of the Goa Port cruise terminal is in progress. Further, cruise ships also visit the Andamans, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. Puducherry as a cruise destination had its first call only earlier this month. Also, India's river cruise tourism is witnessing robust growth, with 15 river cruise circuits operational across 13 National Waterways (NWs) spanning nine states. The number of NWs supporting river cruises has risen from just 3 in 2013-14 to 13 in 2024- 25, while luxury river cruise vessels have increased significantly from 3 to 25 during the same period. To boost inland water-based tourism, 51 additional cruise circuits have been identified on 47 NWs for development by 2027. Three world-class river cruise terminals are also planned, with construction already underway at Kolkata. Why are many cruise liners still hesitant to make Indian ports their home ports? The phenomenal growth of India's cruise sector is supported both by domestic and international ship calls. At present, Delhi-based Waterways Leisure Tourism Ltd has homeported one ship. Homeporting is a strategic decision of cruise liners, but our government has been proactively working on numerous aspects to make India a preferable destination.

EaseMyTrip Withdraws Support As Indian Players Skip Ind-Pak Match At Legends League
Last Updated: The WCL on Sunday called off the India vs Pakistan match, scheduled for July 20 at Edgbaston, after several Indian legends decided to skip. EaseMyTrip, a leading Indian travel-tech firm and official sponsor of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), announced its decision to withdraw support from any match featuring Pakistan. The WCL on Sunday called off the India vs Pakistan match, scheduled for July 20 at Edgbaston, after several Indian legends decided to skip. 'Despite entering into a 5-year sponsorship agreement with the World Championship of Legends (WCL) two years ago, our stance has always been clear—EaseMyTrip will not be associated with or participate in any WCL match involving Pakistan. We proudly continue to support the India Champions and stand firmly by our team," said the Indian travel-tech firm. 'However, as a matter of principle, we do not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan. This position was communicated unambiguously to the WCL team from the beginning. EaseMyTrip supports Team India, but will not engage in any match featuring Pakistan. Let's bring the cup home. Bharat First. Always," it added in an X post. Indian Players Skip Pak Match WCL cancelled the planned India-Pakistan cricket match, citing unintended discomfort caused to Indian players and fans. The fixture had been scheduled in the spirit of recent sporting engagements between the two nations—such as the volleyball match and the upcoming Pakistan hockey team's tour of India—with the intention of offering fans positive, memorable moments. However, the WCL acknowledged that the announcement had unintentionally hurt sentiments and impacted Indian cricket legends and supporting brands. In a statement, the organisers said: 'We at WCL have always cherished and loved cricket, and our only aim has been to give fans some good, happy moments… More than that, we unintentionally caused discomfort to our Indian Cricket Legends, who have brought so much glory to the country, and we ended up affecting the brands who supported us purely out of love for the game." This would have been the first cricket match between India and Pakistan since the military standoff that followed the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. According to reports, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Yusuf Pathan were among the first to withdraw from the game. Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan had earlier opted out as well, citing the 'prevailing geopolitical situation." On May 11, Dhawan confirmed his decision, sharing an email to organisers. Taking to X today, he said: 'Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota." view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 07:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Meanwhile, the organisers of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) have officially called off the India-Pakistan match and apologised for hurting the sentiments and hopes of people. In its statement, WCL said that it had announced the India-Pak fixture after a recent volleyball match between the two countries to create happy memories for fans. The tournament says that this may have ended up hurting the feelings of many and caused discomfort to the Indian legends. In the wake of this, a decision to call off the fixture was taken. WCL further apologised for hurting sentiments. Earlier, several Indian players like Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan also informed the media that they would not be playing the India-Pakistan game.
