Celebrity chef Neil Perry announces shock closure of his popular bar: 'Absolutely devastated'

Daily Mail02-06-2025
Celebrity chef Neil Perry has called last drinks at his luxe Double Bay cocktail bar Bobbie's, just under 12 months after opening it.
The stylish basement bar in Sydney 's eastern suburbs, is tucked beneath his popular Cantonese restaurant Song Bird inside Gaden House.
The nine-month-old establishment was a passion project Perry launched in partnership with New York-based hospitality heavyweight Linden Pride, co-owner of Dante and Caffe Dante - two of Manhattan's most acclaimed bars.
The team from the swanky jazz bar broke the news of the sudden closure on May 29 - leaving customers devastated.
'Last drinks at Bobbie's. Tonight we raise a glass one final time - to the memories, the music, the cocktails, the team and the incredible guests who made Bobbie's so special,' a Bobbie's spokesperson said on social media.
'A heartfelt thank you to everyone who sipped, danced, and shared all the good times. Your support meant the world.
'And today we remember and honour the man who inspired it all - the legendary Bob Rogers. Bobbie's was named for you, and you will always be in our hearts. With love and gratitude, The Bobbie's Team.'
Perry revealed the decision was made jointly as his business partner shifts focus to his booming business overseas.
'Linden's US-based hospitality group, Dante, is expanding rapidly, with multiple new venues planned across America in the next 18 months,' the top chef said in a statement, according to Hospitality Magazine.
'Our landlords are in discussions with prospective operators interested in taking over the space.'
The restaurateur opened both Bobbie's and Song Bird in August 2024, with Bobbie's cocktail bar occupying the basement, and Song Bird just above on street level.
With an ambitious vision of delivering world-class cocktails to Sydney's eastern suburbs, Bobbie's dream was short-lived, with operations winding up quietly amid behind-the-scenes reshuffling at Gaden House.
Locals were quick to comment last week at their dismay of the popular bar closing, with many referring to it as an 'institution'.
'So sad to see you go. An institution. Thanks for the great memories. Thinking of all the beautiful thoughtful staff who worked there,' one wrote.
'So sad - fantastic cocktails and such amazing bartenders and service. You will all be missed,' another added.
'This is heartbreaking - we love you Bobbie's,' one shared.
'My favourite bar - such great shame,' another revealed.
'Absolutely devastated - Sydney needed this,' one said.
While the bar's closure has sparked speculation around the future of Song Bird upstairs, Perry was quick to quash rumours that his multi-level Cantonese restaurant is also shutting up shop.
'Song Bird is absolutely not closing,' he told Hospitality Magazine, clarifying that recent reports in the Australian Financial Review referred to a strategic review of the restaurant's footprint - not its demise.
Instead, Perry revealed he's scaling back from four floors to three, with the top level - originally set to house an event space and a la carte dining - now being handed over to become private offices.
'Managing three levels as part of the restaurant proved more complex than we anticipated. Streamlining our footprint will greatly enhance our operations,' he explained.
With the changes, Song Bird will now seat 140 diners, including outdoor tables, and introduce a new menu inspired by Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese flavours.
Perry described the revised layout as 'the ideal size to manage and a key part of the Margaret Family Precinct moving forward.'
The closure of Bobbie's marks a rare misstep for Perry, whose dining empire includes restaurant's Rockpool, Spice Temple, Margaret, and Next Door located in Sydney, as well as Rockpool and Rosetta in Melbourne.
'Running Bobbie's has been a fantastic experience. While we're disappointed to see it go, this move allows Linden to focus on Dante's growth and gives me the opportunity to concentrate fully on Song Bird, Margaret, Next Door, and our bakery,' Perry said.

Home and Away star Isabel Lucas debuts hunky new surfer boyfriend - after high-profile romances with Chris Hemsworth and Adrian Grenier

Isabel Lucas has a new man on her arm. The former Home and Away actress, 40, went Instagram official with American film director Cyrus Sutton, 43, on Thursday. The pair could be seen cuddling in front of an idyllic waterfall, with Cyrus going shirtless and showing off his muscles. 'Where dreams rest,' the Australian star captioned the series of romantic images. In addition to directing a series of award-winning documentaries, many of them on the subject of surfing, Cyrus is himself a professional surfer. Cyrus landed an Emmy Award in 2005 for his film, Next Wave: A Tsunami Relief Story. The loved-up pair embraced and shared smitten looks in the carousel of images posted on Isabel's Instagram this week. It's unclear how long the couple have been dating, but friends and fans were quick to congratulate Isabel on the romance. 'You guysssss,' wrote filmmaker Sophie Haber, while model Abigail O'Neill added, 'Oh Isabel!' 'Aw this makes me happy to see,' commented artist Josje Leyten, with Silvana Philippoussis chiming in, 'Magic.' Isabel was last linked to a man named Samuel back in 2023. At the time, she shared a loved-up post to Instagram showing the couple cuddling by the beach at sunset. The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star captioned the post with the heartfelt comment: 'How I'm grateful for you. You're a slow burn, my love.' The actress, who dated Chris Hemsworth in 2006 before his Hollywood big break in Thor, is known to be notoriously private when it comes to her love life. She has previously been romantically linked to indie pop singer Angus Stone and Entourage star Adrian Grenier. Isabel has found herself at the centre of controversy in recent years for spreading bizarre theories about the Covid vaccine and 5G technology. She has thrown her support behind Pete Evans, the disgraced chef and conspiracy theorist who used to be a judge on My Kitchen Rules. The Water Diviner star insists she is not against all vaccines, however, just Covid-19 vaccines. Writing on Instagram at the height of the pandemic, the former soap actress said she was 'pro-choice', a term commonly used by people who don't want to be vaccinated.

Orpheus and Eurydice review – acrobatic Gluck is haunting, dizzying and gasp-inducing

Following on from their enthralling Southbank Centre Daphnis et Chloé earlier this year, Orpheus and Eurydice offers a second chance to experience the work of Brisbane-based Circa under the director, choreographer and set designer Yaron Lifschitz. With its streamlined dramatic structure and built-in ballets, Gluck's great reformation opera proves fertile ground for the company's agile blend of acrobatics and contemporary dance. The action opens with the dying Eurydice tumbling through space. So extreme is Orpheus's grief, it seems, that he has wound up in an asylum, strapped to one of a series of hospital beds that, along with a tiny glass house, make up Lifschitz's minimalist set. The acrobats swirl over and under him – every man an Orpheus, every woman a Eurydice – recalling the emotional volatility of their relationship and Orpheus's feverish hopes and fears for their future. Throughout this stark yet reasoned production we are never entirely sure what is real and what exists merely in the protagonist's head. Are the sombre chorus members disembodied hospital orderlies or fellow inmates? The final scene suggests the latter, but the director keeps us guessing. Lifschitz is a master of the striking image: a human tower that collapses to audible gasps; a staircase of bodies that one of the Orpheus figures must ascend. Only the occasional wobble reminds us of the extreme athletic demands. Suspended loops enable acrobats to float and fly while hinting at hangmen's nooses or restraints. White institutional walls are deftly lit by Alex Berlage in vivid crimsons, greens and minty blues. Libby McDonnell's black, white and red costumes are simplicity itself; Boris Bagattini's sparing video projections include occasional closeups on a troubled face and surtitles that cleverly dissolve in trails of mist. Gluck's three-hander opera is condensed here by combining the roles of Eurydice and Amor, as if Orpheus has lost the power to differentiate between the two. Iestyn Davies is outstanding as the bereaved husband, his tireless countertenor rich and even, with memorably light and lyrical top notes. Physically he holds little back, at one point balancing on the shoulders of a cluster of acrobats. The climax, an affecting account of Che Farò Senza Eurydice, finds him abandoned on a bare stage, arms wrapped around his body as if in a straitjacket. Samantha Clarke's soprano rings out bright and frisky as Amor before turning lush and sorrowful as Eurydice. Laurence Cummings leads the Scottish Chamber Orchestra through a bracing, finely judged account of the score, the Scottish Opera Chorus matches his intensity, singing with power and discipline. Their unnerving final appearance as the bloodied Orpheus is strung up by the heels in his own private Bedlam is one of the production's most haunting images. At Edinburgh Playhouse until 16 August
