Chelsea beat Manchester United in FA Cup final to seal domestic treble

Bompastor had already led the Blues to league cup glory and a sixth successive Women's Super League title in her first season in charge at Chelsea, who became the first side to go through a 22-match WSL campaign without a loss.
Baltimore opened the scoring with a penalty on the stroke of half-time then provided the assist for Catarina Macario to make it 2-0 when she nodded home with six minutes remaining in the second half.

France international Baltimore denied holders United any chance of a comeback when she lashed home at the start of 10 minutes added time to cap off the triumph.
England boss Sarina Wiegman was watching on at Wembley, where Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, who four days ago announced he had purchased a minority stake in Chelsea's women's side, took in the win alongside wife and 23-time tennis grand slam singles winner Serena Williams.
The contest got off to a cagey start, United with the slight advantage after winning a few set-pieces and forcing Hannah Hampton – battling Mary Earps to be England's first-choice keeper at July's Euros – to palm away Grace Clinton's corner.
Aggie Beever-Jones, who has enjoyed a splendid season with the WSL champions, was able to beat Millie Turner's challenge, but it did take the sting out of her effort, which was comfortably saved by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Chelsea then dealt with a cross at the other end of the pitch, but it was only cleared as far as the unmarked Dominique Janssen, who missed a big chance to hand United the lead when she fired just over the crossbar.
Mayra Ramirez made easy work of the United defence, skipping freely around a collection of red shirts and forcing Tullis-Joyce to react quickly before Lucy Bronze could take advantage and prod home.
The American keeper denied Beever-Jones again, this time diving to stop an effort that curled dangerously close to her right post.
But the Blues soon took the lead after Erin Cuthbert was brought down by Celin Bizet, who caught the Scotland international with a boot to the midriff.

Baltimore picked out the bottom left with her spot-kick, and Tullis-Joyce dove the wrong way.
United substitute Ella Toone, who came on for Turner after the restart, got herself involved quickly, stinging Hampton's palms.
Bompastor made her first change shortly after the hour, replacing Ramirez with Macario, and United narrowly escaped conceding a second when Gabby George nearly turned a cross into her own net.
VAR silenced United's protests for a penalty, arguing Hampton had unjustly impeded Elisabeth Terland, before Beever-Jones missed a golden chance to double the Blues' advantage, skying an effort after she was teed up by Macario's backheel.
United States international Macario then added her own name to the scoresheet, rising highest amongst a sea of red shirts to meet Baltimore's free-kick and powering her header past Tullis-Joyce.
But the Blues were not finished scoring, and Baltimore bagged her brace, lashing home moments after 10 minutes of added time were announced.

What could Gittens bring to the Chelsea flanks?

Chelsea are interested in a talented young winger - far from the first time that storyline has appeared during a transfer latest name on their lips is Borussia Dortmund's Jamie predominantly left-winger, 20, has caught the eye after a breakthrough 2024-25 season in the Bundesliga where he scored 12 goals and provided five assists across 48 games in all purple patch came over Christmas, scoring or assisting in six out of seven games between November and January - but, notably, did find the net just once more after the amount of recruitment in attacking areas for Chelsea in recent seasons, fans might well be thinking - in the words of DJ Khaled - 'another one'?However, with Jadon Sancho returning to Manchester United after his loan spell, Mykhailo Mudryk's future still unclear and Raheem Sterling likely to be heading for the exit, it does leave the Blues light on that side of the pitch before a campaign where they will need more depth to cope with Champions League Chelsea choosing against signing Sancho permanently, it seems Gittens is the replacement, but how does he compare? When it comes to output, Gittens just comes out on top for combined goals and assists, with 17 compared to Sancho's 15. However, they were equal in their goalscoring efficiency, with both having a shot conversion rate of 15.6%.Sancho's strength lay in what he did for others, creating more chances than Gittens playing more passes into the box and winning possession in the final third more often, according to on the other hand, was particularly strong on what he did with the ball at his feet. The England Under-21 international proved higher for dribbles completed (3.6 to 2.2), 10 or more progressive carries (181 to 133), duels won per 90 (7.2 to 3.6) and then winning over half of those duels (50.1% as opposed to Sancho's 44.7%).In Enzo Maresca's time at Chelsea, wingers have been interchangeable, with players often switching positions during matches. The right-hand option has generally been Noni Madueke and he has excelled with his output in goals and assists per 90 edges out Gittens at 0.6 compared with 0.5, while he had also more shots per 90 (3.5) and more shots on target per 90 (1.5) than both Gittens and 2024-25 also featured more touches in the opposition box per 90 than the other two (8.6 compared to 6.0 and 6.5).The numbers suggest there is still room for improvement in Gittens' game, and the drop-off towards the end of the season that saw him start only three of the final 10 matches could be a Chelsea often favour potential over ready-made and, at just 20 years old, he has time on his side to become to become a top-level talent.

Chester boost squad with ex-Altrincham skipper Jones

The Blues, who lost out 2-1 to Scunthorpe United in last season's play-off final, have announced the signing of James Jones from National League club Altrincham. Jones, a central defender, has penned a one-year-deal at the Deva Stadium. He becomes boss Calum McIntyre's second summer addition to the squad, following on from fellow defender Tom Leak. Jones, who was named club captain at Altrincham in 2023, made a total of 146 appearances for the Robins over two spells. In between these stints was a two-year stay at League Two Barrow. Jones, who began his career with The New Saints, told the club's website: 'I'm absolutely made up. I left Altrincham a couple of weeks ago and after looking at the clubs I could join, Chester was at the top of the list. 'In the past eight years I have played for Barrow and Altrincham, so Chester is the biggest club I have played for. 'Although I am coming down a level, I know the size of this football club. It's in a division it shouldn't be in.' Two key players have pledged their futures with the club - Dylan Mottley-Henry and Iwan Murray. Mottley-Henry, 27, joined the club back in October, before then having a spell in the New Year on a dual registration basis at FC United of Manchester. The forward scored three goals and contributed two assists in just eight starts for the Blues last season, with his most memorable moment seeing him bag the equaliser in the 2-1 play-off semi-final victory at Kidderminster. He said: 'I'm really happy to be staying at Chester for another season. 'It's a club that I've really enjoyed my football at. The fans, the staff, and the lads in the dressing room made it an easy decision for me. 'I'm excited for what we can achieve together next season, and I can't wait to get started again and hopefully build on what we've already done. Let's finish the job and make it a big one.' Murray has penned a new one-year deal, with a further option to extend. He was an instrumental figure in the midfield last campaign, scoring four goals in his 41 appearances in all competitions, including opening the scoring against Buxton in the play-offs. Murray said: 'I am really happy to be at Chester for another season. 'I've been at the club for a while now and last season was really enjoyable to be a part of, it's a really good set of lads in the changing room and that was a big part of wanting to sign for the club again for the season ahead.' Defender Henry Briscoe has signed his first senior deal with the club. The 18-year-old from Huxley joins fellow scholar Oskar Rosenblatt in making the step-up to the first team squad.

'They're in a bit of a hole' - France star reveals why he rejected Man Utd move

Adrien Rabiot says he has received multiple offers to join Manchester United in recent years, but was reluctant to move to Old Trafford given the club are 'in a bit of a hole at the moment'. The 30-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with the Red Devils back in 2023, when he was nearing the end of his contract with Serie A giants Juventus. But Rabiot agreed to a one-year extension in Turin later that summer and went on to make 35 appearances across the 2023/24 season, helping Juve win the Coppa Italia. Twelve months on, United again explored the prospect of capturing Rabiot on a free transfer, only for the France international to return to his homeland and sign for Marseille instead. It has proven to be a great fit for both parties, with Rabiot racking up nine goals and four assists in Ligue 1 as Marseille secured Champions League qualification with a runners-up finish behind Paris Saint-Germain. Reflecting on what could have been in a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic, Rabiot – who was named Marseille's player of the season – lifted the lid on just how close he came to playing for United. 'It really could have happened two years ago, when I was coming to the end of my contract at Juventus and I finally decided to extend by a year,' Rabiot explained. 'We had great talks and there were written offers. But in the end, it didn't happen. 'Last year as well, when I was free, they came back in again. I had good talks with them again. But it's true that it was a bit tricky. 'The situation they're in at the moment… I felt a bit of reticence about whether United were going to be able to go on and achieve great things. Because they're in a bit of a hole at the moment.' Rabiot now shares a dressing room at Marseille with Mason Greenwood, who left United in 2023 following an internal investigation into his conduct. The six-month investigation was launched after Greenwood was arrested in early 2022 following allegations surrounding material published online. Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour before prosecutors dropped the case against him in February 2023. 'Mason is an incredible player,' Rabiot said of the English forward. 'If he hadn't had all of his problems, I think he'd have an image like [Jude] Bellingham. Mason would be the star. 'He's an exceptional player. He can score with his right foot and his left foot, he has an exceptional shot, he can dribble. More Trending 'We're very lucky to have him. When he's really focused, he does really great things.' It was widely reported last month that Greenwood was attracting strong interest from the Premier League, with at least two unnamed top-flight clubs said to be mulling over a proposed bid for the attacker. Greenwood's current contract with Marseille runs through to the summer of 2029. Rabiot, meanwhile, has just 12 months remaining on his deal at the Stade Velodrome.
