News184 days ago
The eight time Ballon d'Or winner is expected to travel to multiple cities in the peninsular nation if everything goes as per plans, a source revealed.
The mere indication of Lionel Messi's visit to India has thrilled football enthusiasts in the nation. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is expected to visit multiple cities, including Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
A long list of dignitaries, including the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, are anticipated to meet the World Cup winner during his time in the peninsular nation, if all goes as planned.
'It's been finalised, and we are waiting for an official announcement from Messi, maybe on his social media handle anytime soon," a source said.
'As of now, we have agreed on the proposed itinerary and are just awaiting an official announcement from his social media, which could be anytime soon," the source continued.
Messi is expected to land in Kolkata on the night of December 12 around 10 pm and will stay in the City of Joy for a couple of days.
The Argentina skipper's Kolkata schedule on December 13 will start at 9 am with a meet-and-greet event, followed by the unveiling of a 70-foot statue of him at the Lake Town Sribhumi on VIP Road. Organisers claim this will be the first-ever and tallest statue of the World Cup winner anywhere in the world.
He will then head to Eden Gardens, where the GOAT Concert and Cup will be held from noon to 1.30 pm. A sellout crowd is expected as it will be a fully ticketed event.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to honour Messi during the Eden Gardens programme, while former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly is also expected to attend the event.
'I don't want to mislead people. So basically, it will be a celebration of Messi, a master class with Messi."
'He will play the GOAT Cup in a seven-side soft-ball, soft-touch game with Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham, Bhaichung Bhutia, among others. It will be a celebration play in respect of Messi," the source added.
'This will be at Eden Gardens. It will be a ticketed event. Denominations are yet to be decided. It would be a little expensive — should not be less than Rs 3,500."
'The entire stadium will be open, so we can expect a full capacity of 68,000. For 1 hour 20 minutes Messi will be there with musical tribute, masterclass with kids," the source added.
On the evening of December 13, Messi is expected to travel to Ahmedabad to attend a private event hosted by the Adani Foundation at their Shantigram headquarters.
The magician from Rosario will travel to Mumbai for events on December 14, including a meet-and-greet at CCI at 3.45 pm, followed by the GOAT Concert and Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. Messi is also set to interact with the Indian football team in Mumbai.
'We've booked the Wankhede Stadium for the GOAT Cup at 5.45 pm on December 14," the source said.
Media reports suggesting Messi could participate in a seven-a-side cricket match with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli circulated a day earlier, but there is still no clarity over the same.
'He is not going to play any cricket match in Mumbai. It will be only soft ball and soft touch with him. It will be a celebration of his journey with the presence of Indian celebrities."
'In Mumbai, we have planned an interaction with the Indian football team. Obviously, Sunil Chhetri and the Indian team moment that we have planned in Mumbai, as per their respective availabilities," the source said.
Messi is slated to travel to New Delhi on December 15, where he is scheduled to meet the national Premier, followed by a GOAT Concert and Cup at Feroz Shah Kotla.
Messi is also set to engage with budding players and kids in every city he visits.
'Messi will impart a masterclass with kids at every centre. The main idea is to celebrate Messi's success, giving a little bit, for instance, 30 to 40 minutes to motivate the young generation of players. So, masterclass and interaction with Messi."
However, the source dispelled talks of a Kerala leg during Messi's visit and added that the former Barcelona superstar is also expected to travel with a large entourage including footballers, though details remain under wraps.
'However, there will be no event in Kerala as earlier reported," the source said.
Messi made his first appearance in India on August 31, 2011, landing in Kolkata as fans gathered at the airport to welcome him. He was here with his team to play an exhibition match against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium, a match they won 1-0.
Messi's arrival sparked 'Messi fever" in Kolkata, with thousands of fans lining the streets, donning Messi jerseys, and packing the 75,000-capacity stadium.
Tentative Itinerary:
December 12: Arrival in Kolkata (10pm).
December 13 (Kolkata): 9am — Meet and greet event; Statue unveiling (70-feet) at Lake Town Sribhumi, VIP Road; 12 noon to 1.30pm — GOAT Concert at Eden Gardens followed by GOAT Cup; December 13 (Evening): Adani Foundation private event at Shantigram, Ahmedabad.

Chennaiyin FC Suspends Operations Due To Uncertainty Surrounding ISL

Indian club football appeared to be in complete crisis as Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday suspended its operations in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, days after Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC decided to stop paying salaries to their first-team players and staff. Chennaiyin's decision came a day before a crucial meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) top brass and eight ISL clubs on Thursday. Chennaiyin FC is, however, unlikely to have a representation in the meeting as the club is not among the signatories calling for such a move. "In the light of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of the ISL, Chennaiyin FC has taken the extremely difficult decision to temporarily pause club operations," the Chennai-based club said on its social media handle. "These are never easy decisions to make, and ours has come after much thoughtful consideration and careful deliberation. The challenges of being a stakeholder in Indian football are well recognized. "This is not a step we take lightly. It affects people we care about deeply. The welfare of our players, coaches, staff and their families remains a priority, and we are in constant communication with them as we face this together." The two-time ISL champion side "hope that this pause will be short-lived and that we can return to doing what we love as soon as there is clarity for all clubs". "Throughout this uncertainty, our commitment to the growth of Indian football, upon which this journey began remains as strong as ever. To our loyal supporters, your passion and belief have always inspired us. We ask for your understanding as we navigate this challenging period, and we look forward to better days ahead," it added. "At Chennaiyin FC, we are more than just a football club. We are a family. Like any family, we support each other in difficult times. However we must remain true to the core values on which this club was built and which we have always strived to uphold." Last week, ISL side Odisha FC took the decision to suspend paying salaries to its first-team players and staff. Late on Monday, Bengaluru FC indefinitely suspended contracts of its first-team players and staff amid the continued uncertainty over the ISL, which remains on hold. The club, home to legendary striker and former India captain Sunil Chhetri, said the lack of clarity on the League's future left it with no choice but to take this "difficult" decision. "In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of the players and staff belonging to the first team,' the Bengaluru club had said in statement. "Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one we have put everything aside made, season after season. "However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added. Bengaluru FC also urged both the AIFF and FSDL to resolve the impasse at the earliest. "We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the club said. The ISL was put on hold by its organisers, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), due to the unresolved status of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The current 15-year MRA between FSDL and AIFF, signed in 2010, expires on December 18. Amid the growing uncertainty, eight ISL clubs have written to the AIFF expressing concern about their future. The AIFF's top brass is scheduled to meet the CEOs of the eight clubs on Thursday to discuss the situation. The letter, calling for a "constructive dialogue" with the AIFF, was signed by Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC and Punjab FC. The three Kolkata-based clubs -- Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting -- as well as Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC were missing. Last month, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey had assured that the 2025-26 ISL season would be held, but stopped short of confirming a start date. On July 11, FSDL officially announced that the 2025-26 ISL season had been put "on hold' due to uncertainty surrounding the MRA renewal. The ISL usually runs from September to April. Following a directive from the Supreme Court, the AIFF has been asked not to negotiate new terms of the MRA (with FSDL) until a final judgment is delivered in the AIFF draft constitution case. A ruling is expected soon.

AFC Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers: India U-20 women's team held to goalless draw by Indonesia

The Indian U20 women's team opened its AFC Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers with a goalless draw against Indonesia at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Vietnam. India gets a point for its effort, which keeps it in second place in Group D. The side will next take on Turkmenistan on Friday. Neha's sixth-minute cross from the left wing deceived the Indonesian defence, leaving Pooja and Sulanjana Raul on the chase at the far post. A simple touch could have posed serious questions to Indonesian goalkeeper Alleana Ayu Arumy, but the ball eluded both. As the clock ticked past the half-hour mark, Sulanjana and Pooja tried their luck from long range. While the former's effort missed the target by inches, the latter saw her shot fly straight into Alleana's hands. Neha looked lively down the left flank after the change of ends, but the Indonesia defenders worked in unison to isolate her and gain possession of the With a little over 20 minutes left, India began to press high. Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam intercepted a pass in the attacking third and cut it back for substitute Babita Kumari.. The latter, however, was unable to get a touch on the ball. Minutes later, Sibani looked to find Babita again with a cross from the left, but Alleana collected it calmly. Indonesia's only notable chance of the match came in the 87th minute, when substitute Ajeng Sri Handayani bounded past the India defence and attempted to place the ball at the far post. India goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem, however, got down low to make a save before Thoibisana Chanu Toijam cleared.
