Writer, activist and lawyer Banu Mushtaq's short story collection 'Heart Lamp' on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) night became the first Kannada title to win the coveted GBP 50,000 International Booker Prize in London.
Mushtaq described her win as a victory for diversity as she collected the prize at a ceremony at Tate Modern along with her translator Deepa Bhasthi, who translated the title from Kannada to English.
Here's how various readers, writers and political leaders reacted to win:
Prof. Rajendra Chenni, Shivamogga
'I consider the award of Booker to Banu Mushtaq a recognition of the enormous richness of modern Kannada literature, because she belongs to the great tradition of short story writers who initiated the modern phase in Kannada literature.
More importantly, as every honest writer should do, Mushtaq, for many decades, has written about the plight, the struggle and the triumph of ordinary women in a traditional society.
Her writings are a vindication of significant writing which always represents a critique of the world we live in.'

Deepa Bhasthi is not only the first Indian translator to win the prize, she's also the one who actually put the book together from a wide range of Banu Mushtaq's stories. 'Heart Lamp': written by a woman, translated by a woman, edited by a woman.

Faisal Khan made serious allegations against his family, breaks off relations with brother Aamir Khan because of...

In a significant development within the Khan family, actor Faisal Khan has publicly announced his decision to sever all ties with his brother, Aamir Khan, and other family members. This announcement marks a new chapter in a longstanding and complex relationship between the siblings. What did Faisal Khan say? During an interview with 'Bollywood Bubble', Faisal said that he has decided to end all relations with the family. He emphasized that he would no longer be part of the family of his late parents, Tahir Husain and Zeenat Tahir Husain, and renounced any claims to their estate. Furthermore, he stated that he would not accept any financial support from Aamir Khan or reside in any property owned by the family. What is the entire matter? This decision follows a series of allegations made by Faisal against his family. He claimed that he was confined in Aamir's Mumbai residence for over a year, during which he was forcibly medicated and labeled as mentally unwell. Faisal described this period as a 'chakravyuh' (labyrinth) where he felt isolated and monitored, with his phone taken away and bodyguards stationed outside his room. What response did Aamir Khan give on this? In response, Aamir Khan and his family released a joint statement expressing their distress over Faisal's allegations, labeling them as 'hurtful and misleading.' They asserted that all decisions regarding Faisal's well-being were made collectively, in consultation with medical professionals, and motivated by love and concern for his health. The family emphasized their unity and requested that the media handle the matter with sensitivity. The rift between the brothers is not new. In the past, Faisal had accused his family of declaring him mentally ill and attempting to take control of his assets. In a 2008 court case, Faisal was declared mentally fit and capable of managing his own affairs, leading to a legal victory over his family's guardianship claims. More about Faisal Khan and Aamir Khan Faisal Khan and Aamir Khan, though brothers, have had very different careers in Bollywood. Faisal started with promise in films like Madhosh and Mela but couldn't sustain success, later turning to direction with Faactory and even acting in Kannada films like Oppanda. In contrast, Aamir rose to superstardom with hits like Lagaan, Dangal, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots and Taare Zameen Par, becoming known for his perfectionism and socially driven films.

On Instagram, Vijayalakshmi wrote on behalf of Thoogudeepa, 'My humble salutations to all Kannada art lovers and my dear fans. I assure my full cooperation for the same, and I firmly believe that my fans will also agree with this,' the post reads. 'Cinema is a medium of entertainment, and it should always be viewed only from the perspective of entertainment,' it further states. On Thursday, Thoogudeepa and six others were arrested after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted by the Karnataka High Court. Thoogudeepa was earlier arrested on June 11 last year, along with Pavithra Gowda and 15 others, in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga. Renukaswamy was allegedly murdered for sending objectionable messages to Pavithra Gowda on Instagram. His body was discovered near a stormwater drain close to an apartment complex in Sumanahalli, Bengaluru, on June 9, 2024. Thoogudeepa was arrested while shooting for The Devil in Mysuru. He was released from prison on October 30 on interim bail after spending 131 days in jail. On December 13, the Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Thoogudeepa and Pavithra Gowda. The state government had approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail. The state government had challenged the bail petition and the Supreme Court denied him relief. According to a source, the movie is presently in the post-production stage and was scheduled to be released in October. To Russia With Love: Indian artists Paint memories of travel and stay in Russia

While Sinha's own works depict the nostalgia of student life abroad, other participants approach Russia differently, sketching their experiences in the cities like Moscow and St Petersburg. 'What we are trying to show is the sheer diversity of associations,' remarks Sinha, who left behind mechanical engineering to devote himself to art. 'For some, it is travel and study. For others, it is literature, films, or even second-hand memories. You don't need to have visited Russia to feel connected.' Over the month, visitors can attend workshops, talks, film screenings, and even Hindi adaptations of Anton Chekhov's short stories and Vasily Shukshin's plays. This edition also introduces a new reciprocal project, 'India, A Russian View', with selected works by Russian masters like Nicholas Roerich and Vasili Vereshagin that interpret India through Russian vision. The opening ceremony will be held on August 20 at 6 pm, with dignitaries from the Russian Embassy and Indian cultural institutions in attendance, alongside a performance by sitar and sarod exponents Lakshay and Aayush Mohan. The exhibition is on till September 20 at Russian House, Feroz Shah Road, New Delhi.
