Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, fled to India after she was ousted by a student-led uprising in August 2024.
Bangladesh's interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, slammed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's public statements from Indian soil, claiming that he personally urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and prevent her from addressing Bangladeshis online.
During an interaction at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, Yunus talked about the volatile political atmosphere in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina fled the country.
He further pointed towards the Bangladesh's strained ties with India and said, 'The whole anger and everything is now transferred to India, because she went there. Not only is she living there, but the problem is, when I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I just simply said, 'You want to host her? I cannot force you to abandon that policy, but please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people, the way she is doing'."
According to Yunus, Hasina continues to address the Bangladeshi people through social media platforms, including YouTube and Facebook, often announcing these broadcasts in advance. Referring to Hasina's addresses, Yunus said this provokes public anger in Bangladesh, creating an atmosphere of unrest.

Bangladesh's Yunus meets key party leader in London

Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus met in London on Friday (June 13, 2025) with the leader of the South Asian nation's key party that many expect to be the frontrunner in elections next year. Tarique Rahman, 59, the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is widely seen as likely to sweep elections that Mr Yunus said will be held in April. The exact date of the elections remains a sticking point but they will be the first in the nation of around 170 million people since a student-led revolt ousted former premier Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, ending her iron-fisted 15-year rule. Mr Yunus and Mr Rahman were shown smiling and shaking hands in the meeting in London, according to photographs released by the government press team, although relations between the caretaker government and the BNP have been rocky. Mr Yunus's government warned last month that political power struggles risked jeopardising gains that have been made, saying that holding elections by mid-2026 would give them time to overhaul democratic institutions. Ms Hasina's rule saw widespread human rights abuses and her government was accused of politicising courts and the civil service, as well as staging lopsided elections. Under pressure from political parties, including the BNP, Mr Yunus said this month that polls will be held in April. However, the BNP has continued to push for an earlier date. The BNP said on Friday (June 13, 2025) it wanted to hold the elections before Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, begins around February 17. Khalilur Rahman, a senior member of Mr Yunus' cabinet, said it was possible that the 'election will be held earlier provided significant progresses in reforms and trials are made'. Key BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said they "hope we can reach a consensus on the reforms soon". Mr Yunus, 84, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has said he will not continue the caretaker role he took up at the behest of student protesters after Ms Hasina fled by helicopter to India.

"We need thorough inquiry": KC Venugopal on Air India plane crash

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 13 (ANI): Congress leader KC Venugopal on Friday said that the inquiry into the Air India flight plane crash near the Ahmedabad airport should be expedited and that there should be a clear-cut answer to why this accident happened. Speaking with ANI, KC Venugopal described the plane crash as 'one of the most shocking incidents' and said that there should be a clear-cut answer why this accident happened. 'What happened in Ahmedabad yesterday was one of the most shocking incidents. There are no words to explain need a thorough inquiry about that. I think there is an established convention to inquire about flight accidents. I think that should be expedited, there should be clear-cut answer why this accident happened. Only an inquiry can reveal this,' KC Venugopal said. On Thursday, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was bound for London from Ahmedabad, crashed shortly after takeoff. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Friday confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. The AAIB has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash, with over 40 staff from the Gujarat State Government joining efforts to support the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams on the ground. The black box, a critical piece of evidence, will be analysed to determine the cause of the tragic crash. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and met the survivor and other injured people. Aircraft manufacturer Boeing also released a statement on X, saying, 'We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them. Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected.' (ANI)
