Charlie Miller, OBE, 1945
He was a self-made businessman, and there are several hair salons in the city bearing his name, and which are now managed by his two sons Jason and Josh. The business celebrated its 50th anniversary just a few years ago, testament to the foundations on which it was built.
Sadly, Charlie had been ill for some years with Alzheimer's, having first been diagnosed in 2015. He died in the Queen's Manor Care Home surrounded by his family and of course his childhood sweetheart, Janet.
Josh and Jason who are Managing Directors in the business said: 'We're heartbroken to share the news of our dad's passing. Charlie was so much more than the name above the door – he was a force of creativity, integrity, and love. He built something truly special: not just a business, but a family. We're proud to be his sons, and to carry forward the legacy he began.'
Charlie and his hairdressing became world renowned and he was inducted into the AIPP Hall of Fame in 2022. Association Internationale Presse Professionnelle Coiffure, recognised his contribution to hairdressing with their highest honour.
Charlie's kindness, humility, and genuine love for people defined both his personal and professional life. He touched the lives of so many – from his loyal clients and trusted colleagues to the wider creative community.
He is survived by his devoted wife Janet, sons Jason and Josh, daughter-in-law India, four grandchildren, his sister Helen and extended family.
It is especially sad that he died in the same year as his great friend, Sir Tom Farmer. The two businessmen went to the North Pole some time back. Charlie said: 'I went to the North Pole with Sir Tom Farmer – one of my famous friends! – I cut his hair there for charity in 2010. When he asked me I had to think about it for about half an hour and then I said I would do it as long as it raised money for Teenage Cancer Trust. I had to cut his hair really quickly! I had a hat on but he was feeling the cold. I have known Tom for ages. He is an amazing man.'
And just like Sir Tom Farmer Charlie Miller was an exceptional man with more than a few stories to tell.
But we are very glad that he met with us in 2016 to tell us a story about Sir Tom and their great friendship – and that we captured him on camera which you can see below.
The mystery of a Trevor Yerbury portrait of Charlie was one which tickled him very much.
The Edinburgh Reporter offers sincere condolences to Janet, Jason, Josh, india and all the family.

Fiona Phillips thanks fans for supporting Alzheimer's memoir in rare message
Fiona Phillips released her memoir Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer's in June. Fiona Phillips has thanked fans for their support of her newly released Alzheimer's memoir in a video message shared by her husband Martin Frizell. In her memoir, Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer's, she opens up about her experience of living with the condition, having been diagnosed three years ago. Former GMTV host Fiona, 64, announced in 2023 she had been diagnosed with dementia the previous year. The Mirror columnist released her memoir in June with the help of Martin, 66, and journalist Alison Phillips. Martin took to Instagram this week to share a message from his wife, who's said to have forgotten that she was writing a book by the time they reached its final chapters. He posted footage of Fiona thanking fans for their support over the memoir's release, yesterday, July 18, reports the Mirror. The video showed Fiona expressing her gratitude as she held an ice cream whilst in a park with Martin. She said in the message to fans: "Hello! Thank you for reading my book. Really good of you. Hope you like it. Okay, bye!" Martin, who stepped down as the editor of This Morning earlier this year, shared in the caption they had been out for a walk. He wrote: "Out for a walk and an Almond Magnum on a hot London afternoon and some words of gratitude for all the kind folk thinking of delving into her book." His post prompted an outpouring of supportive messages. One person wrote: "Oh it's so lovely to see your beautiful wife." Another said: "So nice to see Fiona looking so great." A third wrote: "Sending you both love, great to see you." Someone else said in the comments section: "Thank you Martin for this clip of Fiona. So lovely to see her." Sharing their thoughts, another fan wrote: "So lovely to see Fiona out in the sunshine. Thinking of you both Martin. Big hugs." Another person reacted to Martin's post: "Lovely little clip. Thank you for sharing." Whilst someone else commented: "Awwww.. it's lovely to see you." A host of celebrities responded to the post too. Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid: "Loads of love to you both." This Morning's Alice Beer said: "Congratulations to you both on getting the words on the page. I think you will really help the many many others in a similar situation." In a statement issued prior to the release of her memoir, Fiona said that she hoped to raise awareness around Alzheimer's following her diagnosis. She said: "I hope this book can show people a little about what it is like to live with Alzheimer's. "How frightening and confusing it is. But also how much life can still bring joy and be valued. And if you or someone you love is in the early stages of Alzheimer's, I hope this book brings you some comfort. I want you to know, you are not alone." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Celebrity Catchphrase stumps Derry Girls legend with the final image – but could you have got it?
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELEBRITY Catchphrase has caught out another famous face with a Derry Girls legend getting stumped in the final round. Siobhan McSweeney, who played Sister George Michael in the beloved Channel 4 comedy, appeared on the ITV gameshow hosted by Stephen Mulhern in a bid to raise money for charity. After making it through to the final round, Siobhan had her skills put to one final test, going against the clock to answer questions on the catchphrase pyramid. Unfortunately, she stumbled right at the Super Catchphrase final question – but would you have any luck? In the clue, three people are exercising next to each other, but while two are doing quite well, a third is looking sad and struggling to keep up and working on bicep curls. On the floor is a painted triangle, square, and circle. Do you get it? Siobhan was unfortunately unable to figure it out in the timeframe, though didn't go home empty handed, earning an incredible £25,000 in the final round. Add that to the £4,500 she had collected already, and that meant she was able to give £29,500 to North London's Maya Centre – a specialist charity offering counselling and holistic support to low-income and minoritised women. After the game was over, host Stephen asked her if she wanted to know what she'd missed out on – but it had already clicked for her. Without the pressure of the clock against her, Siobhan correctly guessed the answer was "Out Of Shape" – as the person struggling was standing outside of the circle in front of them. Watch the moment Nadine Coyle misses out on huge £50k Celebrity Catchphrase prize On top of earning some serious cash for her own charity, Siobhan managed to answer the special double question – meaning that Charlie and Jimmi both got their pot doubled too. Jimmi donated his money Baby Lifeline - which supports frontline NHS staff to prevent injuries and deaths in and around childbirth – while Charlie raised money for breast cancer charity, Future Dreams. 4 The star realised what it meant after the clock ran out Credit: ITV
