Netanyahu's school petitions to remove him from hall of fame

Telegraph2 days ago
Students at Benjamin Netanyahu's former school have launched a petition to remove the Israeli leader's portrait from the hall of fame.
More than 200 pupils at Cheltenham High School, near Philadelphia, in the US, signed a petition calling for the politician to be removed from the gallery of notable alumni, according to The New York Times.
The group, which accounts for nearly 14 per cent of the student body, cited the ongoing corruption charges Mr Netanyahu is facing, alongside the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court accusing him of war crimes in their email calling for his removal. The allegations have been vehemently denied by Mr Netanyahu.
'When students see these alumni on the wall of fame as we walk past every day, we understand that these are people we should look up to, and we strive to be like them one day,' two of the students wrote in an email to the school's alumni association according to the report.
'As such, we feel it is not right for him to continue to be recognised in our school,' the petition said.
On Friday members of the alumni association were scheduled to meet school officials to discuss the petition to have Mr Netanyahu's portrait removed.
The Israeli leader, who graduated from Cheltenham in 1967, was inducted into its hall of fame in 1999.
His brother, Yonatan Netanyahu, who was killed in 1976 while trying to rescue hostages held by Palestinian and German terrorists in Uganda, was inducted in 1984.
In an email to a lawyer representing the association and the school district, Emily Brecker Greenberg, the secretary of the alumni association, reportedly wrote: 'I believe that most people on our board would like to keep Netanyahu up, but maybe with an update in his biography.'
She added: 'It is interesting that the world really doesn't do much about other dictators who massacre thousands of their population, but Israel is always the one in the hugely negative news,' she added. 'And I say that letting you know that everyone on our committee is not happy with the situation in Gaza …. From EITHER side!!!!'

Israel kills 79 people seeking aid in Gaza, Hamas officials say

At least 79 Palestinians seeking aid have been killed in northern Gaza while waiting for United Nations food lorries, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The Israeli military said its troops had fired warning shots towards a crowd of thousands of people on Sunday to remove what it said was 'an immediate threat'. It said initial findings suggested casualty figures were inflated and it 'certainly does not intentionally target humanitarian aid trucks'. A spokesman for the UN World Food Programme said: 'On the morning of 20 July, a 25-truck-WFP convoy carrying vital food assistance crossed the Zikim border crossing point destined for starving communities in northern Gaza. 'Shortly after being released from checkpoints to enter Gaza, our convoy encountered passive crowds of hungry civilians which came under gunfire, with reports of fatalities and many more injured. WFP is working with authorities to gather more details about the incident.' On Sunday Israel also ordered the evacuation of one of the only cities yet to be invaded in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defence Forces told Palestinians to leave Deir al-Balah, dropping leaflets on the city before an expected offensive. • What we see in Gaza is rekindling jihad. Netanyahu must be stopped Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been corralled into al-Mawasi, a southern camp on the Mediterranean coast, and the IDF encouraged those remaining in Deir al-Balah to head south and join them as it prepares to invade. However, relatives of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas questioned the offensive because it is suspected that some of the remaining captives could be held in the central Gazan city. Israel has so far been reluctant to enter Deir al-Balah for fear of risking their lives. The families expressed fear that the offensive could provoke Hamas to kill their loved ones. Last year six hostages were killed as Israeli troops closed in on their hiding place in tunnels below Rafah. 'Can anyone promise us that this decision will not come at the cost of the loss of our loved ones?' the Hostage and Missing Families Forum said. 'Unfortunately, despite all the spin and false promises, many families have already learned firsthand the meaning of expanding the fighting in the shadow of negotiations and the absence of a clear war plan. One can only recall the horror of the murder of the six hostages in August last year. 'Enough! The Israeli people overwhelmingly want an end to the fighting and a comprehensive agreement that will return all the hostages.' Negotiations to end the 21-month conflict have stalled as Hamas officials study maps of Gaza showing the areas that, it is proposed, would remain under Israeli control in the event of a truce and the release of hostages. • Crime boss, traitor, looter — or Gaza's best hope? Israel is understood to have proposed a one-kilometre buffer zone around the strip, rather than the three-kilometre corridor that was initially suggested. The IDF would withdraw from most of the central and southern parts of Gaza. A two-month ceasefire earlier this year ended after anger in Israel at Hamas staging public handover ceremonies of hostages and the refusal of Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, to withdraw troops.

BREAKING NEWS Global hack on Microsoft exposes US agencies, energy giants

Tens of thousands of Microsoft servers are currently at risk exposing dozens of US government agencies and businesses after hackers launched an unprecedented global attack. Authorities are investigating after SharePoint servers were compromised in the last few day, The Washington Post reports. The platform is used to share and manage documents and remain at risk as Microsoft is yet to fix the flaw, per the outlet. Users are being urged to take the servers offline or make changes to the SharePoint programs to protect themselves. The attack is currently not affecting servers housed on the cloud such as Microsoft 365 and only impacts those housed within an organization. The breach is known as a 'zero day' attack as it targets a previously unknown vulnerability. The hack is being investigated by the US government in partnership with officials in Australia and Canada.

Bernard Arnault hopes for luxury turnaround

Bernard Arnault is hoping for a turnaround when his luxury empire updates investors. The wealth of the Frenchman (pictured with Ivanka Trump), whose empire includes Louis Vuitton and Dior, has fallen by more than £15billion this year. But he is still one of the world's richest men - worth £116billion despite a 26 per cent slide in LVMH shares. On Thursday LVMH, whose sales fell earlier this year, announces its second-quarter figures. Arnault, who attended Donald Trump's inauguration, hoped rich Americans splashing out would offset a slowdown in China. But demand has been hit by trade war tension between the US and China. Its alcohol brands, such as Moet champagne, have also been hit hard by tariffs and waning demand.
