'They Wanted Credit, Blaming Kohli Now': BJP Slams Karnataka Stampede Report
The BJP has slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government over its report blaming Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the stampedes during the June 4 victory parade that left 11 people dead and nearly 50 injured.
Aravind Bellad, BJP MLA and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said the government wanted to take credit after the RCB's IPL victory after 18 years, but has now started blaming the franchisee and cricket star Virat Kohli for the stampede deaths.
The state government's report, made public after a high court order, says that RCB put out social media posts inviting the public to join the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium "without consulting the police". The report says RCB also shared a video clip of Virat Kohli, its star player, in which he said the team wants to celebrate the victory with the people of Bengaluru.
These posts, the report said, contributed to drawing a massive crowd to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Confusion over entry passes fuelled the chaos, eventually leading to the stampede tragedy, the report says.
The BJP has now slammed the state government and accused it of trying to evade responsibility. "It's not only RCB that invited people, a huge number of people came on the invitation of the Congress, (Deputy Chief Minister) DK Shivakumar and government officials, the DPAR secretary came on TV and invited people, the government is solely responsible for this," Mr Bellad said.
"If the report says RCB is solely responsible, why did the government suspend police officers? The Chief Minister should apologise to the former police commissioner. If there was an intimation by RCB that they will hold the event, then the government should have refused permission. They they had all the right to say this event cannot be held. Just to take credit for the victory, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister invited people. To now put the blame on a great player like Virat Kohli or RCB is wrong," the BJP leader added.
The state government had urged the high court to keep the report confidential, but the court stated there were no legal grounds for such confidentiality.
The report explains the chaos that led to the stampedes at some gates of the Chinnaswamy Stadium after over 3 lakh people gathered and tried to enter the stadium, which has a capacity of about 35,000.
The report also explains why the state government did not call off the victory parade after the stampede. It says abruptly shutting down the victory celebrations at the stadium "could potentially incite violence among the gathered crowd and adversely affect overall law and order across the city".
"...a measured response was taken by curtailing the duration of the function. Instead of complete termination, a measured approach was adopted by allowing the event to proceed with significantly curtailed duration and enhanced monitoring," it says.

Martyr's Day Rally today: ‘Bengali pride' to be centrepiece of Mamata's poll pitch
As the political situation in West Bengal simmers, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee will address the Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day) rally in Kolkata on Monday, setting the tone for the high-voltage campaign for the Assembly election that is less than a year away. From the stage in the heart of Kolkata, Banerjee is expected to take on the BJP on the issue of 'Bengali ashmita (pride)' and detention of Bengali-speaking migrants in various states. In recent weeks, a political storm has been brewing in Bengal, with the CM alleging that Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states are being subjected to linguistic profiling in the name of national security and detained. The BJP has countered this, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying at a public meeting in Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district last Friday that the TMC is 'actively helping infiltrators' and hindering the state's development through corruption and violence. The PM insisted that 'Bengali pride' was 'supreme' for his party. 'Wherever there is a BJP government, Bengalis are respected,' he said. From the stage in Dharmatala, Banerjee is expected to respond to this specifically and the PM's other comments broadly, and present a roadmap to the Assembly election battle next year. TMC leaders believe the gist of her speech at the biggest event on the party's annual calendar will be raising the pitch on the detention of Bengali-speaking migrants to paint the party as one at odds with the interests of Bengalis. This is a strategy that helped the TMC post a commanding win in the 2021 Assembly polls. Like last year, the CM is also expected to send a message to her party workers and leaders on the importance of maintaining a clean image and working transparently. In 2024, both the TMC chief and her nephew and de facto second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, had urged party workers to be 'more polite and humble' and not do anything wrong. 'We will not tolerate any injustice,' the CM had said in a signal to party strongmen. With questions being raised about the law-and-order situation in the state following the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College last year, communal violence in Murshidabad in April, and an alleged rape at a law college in Kolkata last month, the TMC government is under pressure, and there will be intense scrutiny in the lead-up to the election. 'Mamata Banerjee has raised her voice against the humiliation meted out to Bengali-speaking migrant workers in some BJP-ruled states. It is obvious that in the next election, 'Bangali ashmita (pride)' will be the prime electoral agenda, along with the Centre's stepmotherly attitude towards Bengal. Also, Didi will call for maintaining communal harmony in the state. Above all, she and Abhishek will set the tone for the Assembly election campaign,' said a senior TMC leader who did not wish to be named. 'The CM may also raise the issue of corruption allegations and other serious accusations against party leaders. She has not publicly spoken about the alleged rape at the law college and may again send out a signal to the party rank-and-file that such things won't be tolerated,' said another TMC leader. The Leader of the Opposition in the state, Suvendu Adhikari, meanwhile, will lead a protest march to Uttar Kanya, the branch of the secretariat in Siliguri in north Bengal, on Monday. For years, the July 21 rally has been the TMC's launchpad for its annual political agenda. It is held to commemorate the police firing on Youth Congress workers on July 21, 1993, in which 13 people were killed. The Youth Congress, then led by Banerjee, had organised the march to protest against alleged vote rigging by the then Left Front government and to demand that photo voter IDs be made mandatory to ensure fair voting. From the following year, the Congress began to mark July 21 as 'Shaheed Diwas'. When Banerjee left the party along with a large section of the state Congress to launch the TMC in 1998, the new party carried on the tradition. After the 2011 Assembly election win, Banerjee held her victory rally at the Brigade Parade Ground on July 21. It was the only time she held the rally at a place other than Dharmatala, the usual site of the public meeting. Opp trying to thwart our rally: Mamata Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that the Opposition parties were trying to thwart the Martyrs' Day rally of the TMC, describing it as the battle for democracy against authoritarianism. Banerjee, who inspected arrangements at the venue of the meeting at Esplanade in the heart of the city, however, did not name any opposition party. 'When someone announces a rally towards state secretariat Nabanna, do we have any issue? When you (opposition) hold rallies without police permission, we don't stand in your way,' the TMC chief told reporters at the venue. The TMC believes in democratic rights of everyone to take out rallies to voice their protests, she said, adding that the July 21 event is a battle for democracy against authoritarianism. 'But you become jittery when people turn out in TMC's rally on July 21 in large numbers to save the rights of Maa Mati Manush (mother, land and people),' she said. Banerjee said, 'You called parallel rallies. Well, go ahead, but people are with us.' She was alluding to the rallies of the BJP called on the same day in Siliguri and Paschim Bardhaman. 'Those opposed to the 21st July rally should learn from Trinamool,' she said. The CM's statement came two days after the Calcutta High Court put some restrictions on when processions will be allowed in the city to avoid traffic congestion and help commuters. -with PTI inputs

Azad Group joins SAD, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa to contest Tarn Taran bypoll
Jhabal (Tarn Taran): Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday announced Azad Group president Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa as the party's candidate for the Tarn Taran bypoll, marking the merger of the grassroots group into the SAD. The merger is a shot in the arm for the SAD in the rural, border constituency. Addressing a rally where he made the announcement, Sukhbir said Randhawa, along with 43 serving sarpanches, eight municipal councillors, and several former sarpanches and chairmen, had joined the SAD. He also declared Randhawa as the party's halqa in-charge for Tarn Taran. The bypoll was necessitated by June 27 passing away of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal. The Election Commission is yet to announce a date for the bypoll, but the AAP, the BJP and the SAD have already started work for the electoral contest. Three-time MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu joined the AAP last week, while BJP announced former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani as its in-charge for the constituency just a day later. Sandhu had quit SAD in 2024. At the rally in Tarn Taran's Jhabal village, Sukhbir said senior SAD functionary Gulzar Singh Ranike would be the in-charge for the bypoll campaign. He appealed to Punjabis to unite under the Akali flag to counter "outside forces" who wanted to loot the state. "These forces were behind the 2015 acts of sacrilege which were committed with the sole aim of weakening SAD. We have already called for an independent probe into these sacrilege cases as it feels that only a free-and-fair probe can unmask AAP's role in these heinous incidents," Sukhbir said. He said the AAP's role in the incidents of sacrilege was evident from the conviction of its legislator for sacrilege of the Quran. Randhawa said parties often neglected Punjab after coming to power and accused AAP govt of handing over the state's control to Delhi.

In attack on AAP in Punjab, Anurag Thakur says land pooling scheme like Delhi liquor scam
Bathinda: BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Sunday likened AAP govt's land pooling scheme in Punjab to the 2022 liquor scam in Delhi, stating that the final destination for those behind it will be jail. Speaking to media here, Thakur said Delhi-based leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, alarmed over facing jail terms in the liquor scam, were now making Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann implement the land pooling scheme. "After minting money, they will go away, and those who implement it will have to face the music," Thakur added. Thakur, who is a govt body member of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bathinda, visited the health institute duiring the day. He said a 300-bedded facility would be added shortly. He said he came to know of some medicines not being available at Jan Aushadhi and Amrit Pharmacy in AIIMS, and he would take up the matter at appropriate forums. He also accused the state govt of charging the commercial rate for electricity from AIIMS and asked it to provide electricity at subsidised rates. Thakur also hit out at AAP over a growing perception that its Delhi-based leaders were now calling the shots in Punjan. "People in Punjab feel cheated after giving a thumping majority to AAP, as they chose Punjabis to lead them, but Delhi-based leaders took control and are governing Punjab by proxy," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The former Union minister said the Delhi-based AAP leaders were taking decisions that were not in the interest of Punjab or Punjabis. He also raised the issue of AAP not meeting its promise of giving a Rs 1,000 per month cash incentive to women. The BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur constituency also raised lack of jobs, rising drug menace, no MSP on crops other than wheat and paddy, and gangsters running syndicates from jails. He added that elected members of AAP would start leaving it in the next six months, as they knew it had lost people's confidence. "BJP is sure to form the next govt," said Anurag. He also took potshots at Samvidhan Bachao rallies of the Congress. He accused the Congress-led govt in Himachal Pradesh of not providing adequate assistance to people ravaged by excessive rain, while the central govt was providing assistance.
