Malaysia explores nuclear energy potential under 13MP with MOSTI-PETRA collaboration
Its minister, Chang Lih Kang, said nuclear energy has long been identified as a strategic area, with MOSTI playing a key role in advancing related technologies, developing talent, and formulating the regulatory framework.
'Exploration in the nuclear field is not new. Discussions between MOSTI and PETRA have been ongoing, but this time, with clear government backing under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), we are now moving forward in a more comprehensive and structured manner.
'This reflects a whole-of-nation approach, where all relevant stakeholders are being engaged. We have formed six task forces, three led by MOSTI and three by PETRA,' he told Bernama and RTM after opening the International Conference on Science Diplomacy for Regional Prosperity in ASEAN here today.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13MP last Thursday, said the government was considering nuclear energy as one of the clean, competitive and safe energy sources
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan last Thursday, stated that the government is considering nuclear energy as one of the clean, competitive, and safe energy sources for the future. A structured assessment is currently underway to evaluate its role in Malaysia's long-term energy mix.
The initiative aims to diversify energy sources, enhance energy security, support national carbon reduction targets, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aligning with the country's climate commitments and rising energy demand.
In addition to nuclear energy, Chang said MOSTI is also involved in developing other strategic sectors such as rare earth elements (REE), with a similar focus on technology development, talent cultivation, and regulatory frameworks.
He added that MOSTI is preparing to implement a range of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) initiatives outlined in RMK13, as part of efforts to elevate Malaysia into a high-tech economy.
'As the implementing ministry, we are fully committed to driving the country's progress through the successful execution of these STI initiatives,' he said. - Bernama

Ringgit rises vs greenback on stronger odds of US rate cut
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Friday, extending gains, after United States (US) economic data reinforced expectations of an imminent interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2205/2405 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said US initial jobless claims increased more than expected to 226,000 last week, above market forecasts of 221,000. He said the increase marked a second consecutive weekly rise, supporting views that signs of labour market weakness are emerging, even though Federal Open Market Committee members believe more data is needed before their September meeting. "Notwithstanding that, the US Dollar Index fell 0.09 per cent to 98,084 points as the odds of a September rate cut are rising,' he told Bernama. On the domestic front, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit could remain supported after coming under selling pressure in yesterday's afternoon session. "Expect the ringgit against the US dollar to hover around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he added. The ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.8750/8888 from 2.8732/8765 on Thursday and weakened against the British pound to 5.6770/7039 from 5.6596/6656. It, however, strengthened against the euro to 4.9283/9516 from 4.9411/9463. Against regional peers, the local unit was firmer. It edged up against the Singapore dollar to 3.2906/3064 from 3.2973/3013 and appreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0653/1346 from 13.0954/1146. The ringgit also gained against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.44 from 7.42/7.44 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.4 from 259.9/260.3. - Bernama

Business events key to Malaysia's tourism targets under 13MP
KUALA LUMPUR: Business events will play a vital role in helping Malaysia reach its tourism targets under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasised that business delegates are high-value travellers who contribute significantly to the economy. 'More importantly, business travellers bring with them ideas, investments, and influence,' he said at the Business Events Awards Gala Dinner. The tourism sector remains a national priority, with foreign tourist expenditure reaching RM102.2 billion in 2024. Malaysia has hosted over 3,000 business events in the past decade, attracting more than a million delegates and generating RM18 billion in economic impact. Ahmad Zahid stated that the government views the business events industry as a strategic driver of inclusive and sustainable growth. Efforts include simplifying visa processes for frequent travellers and upgrading airports and convention centres to global standards. The government is also enhancing collaboration between agencies like MACEOS, the Tourism Ministry, and the Trade Ministry. 'But infrastructure alone is not enough,' he added, urging MACEOS to elevate its efforts further. - Bernama
