Neale Daniher honoured with guard of honour from both teams before King's Birthday clash
The pre-match begun, as always, with the Big Freeze 11 sliders, where Sunrise star Matt Shirvington and Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus led a group of 10 Aussie icons, dressed in the theme of Aussie icons.

Then, when the two teams entered the stadium for their last-minute pre-match run-throughs, every Melbourne player ran over to Daniher on the sidelines to each give him their own touch.
Minutes later, players from both sides, as well as coaches and umpires, formed a guard of honour for the Australian of the Year, just ahead of the first bounce of the game.
Daniher was wheeled through the guard of honour by his son Luke in what was an emotional scene.
A sea of the iconic blue beanies formed the backdrop to the guard of honour, which was conducted on the boundary line near the crowd.
It was a special touch added to what has already become a landmark event on the Australian sporting calendar.
'This is a magic moment,' Dale Thomas said.
Bruce McAvaney added: 'What a football family the Danihers are, and what an Australian family they've become.
'And for Neale, who could have hidden away from this and we wouldn't have seen them for all these years, he has delivered in spades in terms of inspiration.'
Kate McCarthy was at ground level when it happened: 'Really emotional scenes just then as both teams gave the guard of honour to Neale Daniher and incredibly touching down here.'

Christian Petracca slammed as damning act exposed during loss to Western Bulldogs
Demons superstar Christian Petracca has been slammed for his poor body language as rumours swirl that he is plotting an exit. Just five days after Melbourne axed premiership coach Simon Goodwin, the Demons fell by six points to the Western Bulldogs. It was an incredible effort given the tumultuous time at the club, but concerning vision of club leader Petracca exposed a damning truth. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? On two separate occasions, the midfielder was seen flapping his arms about after not receiving the ball and even looked genuinely disappointed when he was overlooked for another option that worked out. It led to AFL great Luke Hodge launching a scathing attack on the Demons star on Tuesday night, stating Petracca has made it clear that he is more concerned with his own stats than what is best for the team. 'You've got Christian Petracca here letting him (Langford) know … he's put the arms up, he hasn't followed in. But the worst part is what comes after,' the three-time premiership skipper said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters. 'That results in a goal. Yes, he is bypassed, lets him know, lets everyone know. But where's the reaction? Do you go to the young kid and say, 'Hey, good kick to the top of the goalsquare?' 'Do you go down to Kozzy Pickett, pat him on the back, or do you walk around? He's not going to anyone, he hasn't clapped, hasn't looked across at Langford, who didn't pass it to him, didn't say anything, (he just) turned around. 'That's a person who's worried about his own stats. So if you're looking as a coach coming into this Melbourne football club, the first thing I'll be doing is getting to the leaders and saying play like leaders, react like leaders, and support your younger teammates.' On another occasion, Petracca gave his teammates a gobfull after being closely marked inside the forward 50. After not receiving the ball, Petracca threw his head back and looked genuinely furious. His body language has only fuelled speculation that he is searching for an exit as a rift in the playing group following the sacking of Goodwin becomes clear. The 2021 Norm Smith Medallist appears to be on the lookout for a new club, with several potential destinations emerging for the star midfielder. Hawthorn appears to be the obvious new home for Petracca if he wants the exit bad enough. The Hawks desperately need another goalkicking midfielder, and their attempts to poach Harley Reid out of West Coast are expected to fall short. While Melbourne needs a key forward desperately, and the Hawks have no shortage of them, making a swap deal very feasible. Hawthorn has Mabior Chol, Mitch Lewis, Calsher Dear and Jack Gunston all fighting for three places, and it would make sense for one to give way, especially if it results in them snaring Petracca. Collingwood and Carlton, who both voiced interest in Petracca at the end of last season, also could provide the 29-year-old with an exit plan. But Hodge says, regardless of whether or not he is there next year, Petracca needs to fix his attitude. 'Maybe he may not be there (next year). (But) Wherever he goes, his body language needs to get better,' Hodge continued. 'It's not all about him. It's about the team and how the team is moving forward.' However, it isn't just Petracca who could be itching to leave following Goodwin's exit. Speculation about the playing futures of Bayley Fritsch and Judd McVee is still rife, and they may try to follow Petracca out the door. While the future of captain Max Gawn is also up in the air, with the veteran big seeing Goodwin as a father figure, and he is understood to be furious with the club's decision to sack him. In the meantime, the Demons will face the Hawks on Saturday afternoon, in a clash sure to provide plenty of fireworks.

Carlton AFLW captain Kerryn Peterson celebrates ‘dream' birth of first child days before new season
Carlton captain Kerryn Peterson has announced the birth of her first child with husband Joel. The 33-year-old shared the news of her pregnancy in February, confirming she would be sidelined from the 2025 AFLW season beginning with Thursday night's blockbuster opener against Collingwood. And with fortuitous timing the baby boy arrived just in time to cheer on his mum's Blues alongside her. 'Max Edward Peterson,' the couple announced on Tuesday night. 'What an absolute dream.' Carlton celebrated the news while teammates rushed to congratulate — and book in their first meeting. 'As if Thursday night's season opener wasn't exciting enough,' the club wrote. 'Sending all the love in the world to Kez and husband Joel on the arrival of Max.' Blues vice-captain Mimi Hill said: 'He's so cute my guyyy.' Keeley Skepper wrote: 'Can't wait to babysit! Congrats ily.' Darcy Verscio wrote: 'Beautiful fam. Welcome to the world Max.' Former teammate Mua Laloifi wrote: 'How beautiful. Congratulations to you both!' Aussie basketballer Alice Kunek said: 'Congratulations! He is beautiful.' Peterson, captain since 2020, stayed involved during the pre-season working alongside coach Matthew Buck. 'Joel and I have a really exciting journey ahead of us and can't wait to welcome our own little Bluebagger into the world,' Peterson said at the time of her pregnancy announcement. 'This footy club and its people have always been the most incredible support to us, and we're excited for our baby to become part of it. 'It will be a different looking year for me, I've already been driving 'Bucky' (coach Matthew Buck) mad trying to decide what off-field role I'll play this season. 'In the meantime, I'll be down at the club and involved in as many sessions as I can and helping our group prepare for the season ahead.' Head here to watch AFLW live, free and on-demand on 7plus Sport Abbie McKay has stepped up from vice-captain to lead the team in Peterson's absence this year. 'I am so honoured and so excited to be named as captain,' the daughter of club great Andrew said in May. 'It is hard to believe that just a few years ago I wasn't getting picked in the side, so if my appointment is anything to go by it is to dream big. 'I have so many incredible people around me and I know leadership is not a role for one person: our team has a one-in-all-in mentality. 'I am grateful that leaders who have come before me such as Kerryn Peterson, Darcy Vescio and Breann Harrington have set a standard that has empowered our group to take this program to another level in the coming years.'

Mourinho's Fenerbahce hit five to end Bos' Euro dream
Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce have surged into the Champions League qualifying play-offs by overturning a two-goal deficit against Robin van Persie-coached Feyenoord. The result was a blow for Socceroo defender Jordan Bos who had joined his boyhood club during the off-season and hoped to play with them in the Champions League. Bos had made the winning goal when Fenerbahce lost 2-1 in the Netherlands last week. The Turkish club fell further behind in the second leg of Tuesday's third qualifying round clash when Feyenoord defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe scored the opener in the 41st minute. Mourinho's team rallied quickly with two goals before half-time — the second by Colombia forward Jhon Duran, on a season-long loan from Saudi club Al Nassr — on the way to a 5-2 win. That meant Fenerbahce advanced 6-4 on aggregate. Fenerbahce will host Benfica or Nice in the first leg of the play-off round next week with a place in the lucrative 36-team league phase at stake. Benfica started the second leg against Nice with a 2-0 lead at home later on Tuesday. Daniel Arzani, another of Tony Popovic's European-based Australian players, didn't feature in Ferencvaros' 3-0 defeat of Bulgarian club Ludogorets. That took the Hungarian side through 3-0 on aggregate. Rangers advanced to the play-offs 4-2 on aggregate against Viktoria Plzen despite a 2-1 loss in the Czech Republic. The Scottish club will host the first leg of their play-off next week against Club Brugge who got three second-half goals in a 3-2 comeback win over Salzburg to advance 4-2 on aggregate. Russian-owned Pafos, the champions of Cyprus, beat Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine 2-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate. Copenhagen beat its near neighbour Malmo 5-0, one week after a scoreless draw on the other side of the Oresund Bridge that connects Denmark and Sweden. Copenhagen's reward is a two-legged play-off against Swiss champions Basel.
