EFL reveals never-before-seen change to Carabao Cup format with teams required to QUALIFY for main draw

THE EFL have introduced a preliminary round for the Carabao Cup for the first time. Nine Premier League teams competing in Europe mean the cup has to be restructured this season. 1 The Carabao Cup has undergone a shake up Credit: Getty A preliminary round will take place before the first round, consisting of four teams. They include the two teams promoted from the National League last season, Barnet and Oldham, as well as Accrington Stanley and Newport County, who finished in the lowest two spots in the EFL. The preliminary draw and the first round draw will be held on the same day - Thursday June 26. The four League Two sides will face off in the preliminary round week commencing August 4 - a week before the rest of the competition kicks off. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL A preliminary round will get rid of two teams from the tournament, thus reducing the number of teams in round one and two. That will allow each Prem club that is competing in Europe to feature in round three. Round three will also be split across two weeks, commencing September 15 and September 22 - just as it did last season. Brian Barry-Murphy offered Cardiff City manager role, but Leicester may block move

Cardiff City are in talks with Leicester City over the possibility of bringing Brian Barry-Murphy to the club relegated to League 1 last term. Current Leicester assistant Barry-Murphy, who spent a number of years in the Manchester City coaching structure and has previously managed Rochdale, has agreed to the role, according to WalesOnline. Plymouth Argyle are also said to be keen on securing Barry-Murphy's signature, but appear to have been beaten to the signing, with Cardiff hoping Barry-Murphy can spearhead their return to the Championship ranks. The 46-year-old Cork native was installed as Ruud van Nistelrooy's assistant coach at the turn of the year, with the King Power Stadium side under serious relegation pressure, which was realised with their Premier League trap-door exit. Since Omer Riza's departure in April, the Welsh outfit - condemned to Championship relegation last season - has been without a permanent manager. Despite managing the team for the last three games of the season, Aaron Ramsey was unable to keep them from going down. Barry-Murphy - son of Cork GAA great Jimmy - has eyed taking on a leading role for some time. 'To sum it up best, I want to find somewhere that gives me the exact same feeling as when I joined Man City," he said upon his appointment as Leicester City's No. 2. "I had this feeling that it was the perfect place for me to be at that stage of my career based on what I'd done and where I wanted to go. 'I've never had a career map. I've been more in the moment and focused on enjoying myself and improving all the time. I want to work at a club that puts a team together in the way I want to play. 'I want to see something that aligns with my values and my way of playing, which I know now more than ever can produce a winning brand of football. I feel I proved that in my three years at City.' Barry-Murphy previously lined out for Cork City, Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday, Bury and Rochdale.

Manchester United confirm Cunha signing from Wolves

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on a five-year deal with the option of a further year. United effectively completed the deal on June 1 after activating a £62.5million release clause in the 26-year old's contract. Cunha scored 31 goals in 76 appearances for Wolves after completing a permanent move from Atletico Madrid in 2023. Cunha said: "It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. "Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. "I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. "All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top." Cunha became Ruben Amorim's first summer signing on June 1 as the head coach sets about overhauling his squad after a miserable domestic campaign and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The striker helped his country qualify for the World Cup finals on Tuesday when he set up the only goal for Vinicius Jr. in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. United's director of football Jason Wilcox added: "Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. "He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours."
