TN CM, AIADMK hail Pollachi case verdict

Hindustan Times13-05-2025
Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and main opposition AIADMK on Tuesday welcomed a local court sentencing nine men to life imprisonment till death in the sensational Pollachi sexual assault and extortion case.
The Coimbatore Mahila Court, which convicted and sentenced the nine, also ordered compensation of ₹85 lakh to the women victims.
"Justice has been served for the atrocities committed by the wicked criminals including the AIADMK functionary," the Chief Minister said reacting to the verdict. A former AIADMK functionary was among the nine persons convicted. He was sacked from the party following his arrest earlier.
In a post on the social media platform, Stalin said "those sirs who tried to protect the guilty in the AIADMK should feel ashamed."
Hailing the judgment, the AIADMK said the government under former Chief Minister and Edappadi K Palaniswami had transferred the Pollachi sexual assault case to the CBI for an impartial enquiry, and as a result, due justice has been delivered today.
Accusing the DMK of doing politics on the case, the party alleged in a post on 'X' that the ruling dispensation leaked the details of the Anna University college student who was sexually assaulted on the varsity campus last year.
"We demanded a CBI probe to ensure justice for the woman student. But, this Stalin model DMK government opposed it. Who is the DMK trying to shield," the party asked.
In the Pollachi case, the AIADMK government was the reason behind the arrest of the criminals who now got severe punishment, the party said.
"The AIADMK will expose the DMK when Palaniswami-led party comes to power in 2026. Then, it is certain that the DMK will hang its head in shame," it claimed.
Actor-politician and TVK leader Vijay too welcomed the verdict and said the ruling would give solace to the victims, who faced the case with courage and ensured that the criminals were punished.
Vijay demanded that fast-track courts should be set up to expeditiously conduct trial of sexual harassment or assault cases against women and judgment should be delivered within 90 days.
All India Democratic Women's Association state committee member S Rajalakshmi and CPI Puducherry unit, besides expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala hailed the Mahila Court's verdict.

IB inspector gets 1-yr RI for impersonating CBI officer to extort money

1 2 Mohali: A special CBI court has sentenced an Intelligence Bureau (IB) inspector to one year of rigorous imprisonment for impersonating a CBI officer and attempting to extort money from undertrials or falsely implicate innocent persons. The verdict, delivered by Special CBI Judge Baljinder Singh Sra, also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, Harpreet Singh alias HS Sandhu, according to CBI public prosecutor Amol Narang. The court granted Harpreet bail to enable him to appeal before a higher court within 60 days. Narang said the case began after a complainant alleged that Harpreet, through his associate Vikas Bharti, demanded Rs 70,000 to avoid arrest by the CBI. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and arrested Vikas red-handed while accepting the money on Harpreet's behalf. During the trial, charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act could not be proved against Harpreet. Vikas, who was earlier declared a proclaimed offender, remains absconding. The case was registered in July 2016, and the chargesheet was filed in Jan 2017. Charges were framed in June 2019. The court sentenced Harpreet to three months' rigorous imprisonment under Sections 120-B read with 170 of the IPC, and one year RI with a fine of Rs 5,000 under Section 170 IPC. Illegal mining case: CBI seeks jail for former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy

1 2 3 4 Hyderabad: The CBI, which investigated the case related to illegal mining of iron ore at Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka border, on Wednesday approached the Telangana high court urging it to set aside the acquittal order passed by the CBI court in Hyderabad. The CBI court had acquitted former AP minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and former secretary of AP industries and mines department B Kripanandam. The CBI's appeal — seeking conviction of both the public servants — came up before Justice B Vijaysen Reddy who recused from hearing the case because he happened to argue on behalf of one of the accused in the case in the past. The case will come up before another bench on Aug 18. The CBI appeal urged the high court to sustain its case filed against Sabitha and Kripanandam under IPC sections 120-B, read with 409 and under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. They challenged the conviction and the HC admitted their criminal appeals and posted them for final hearing while staying the conviction as an interim measure. The CBI in its appeal before the high court said that the CBI court had made observations that were contrary to each other. The trial court order at one place says that there was criminal misconduct on the part of Sabitha and Kripanandam, and at the same time, observes at another para that malafides cannot be attributed to their conduct. The trial court failed to see the ample evidence placed by the CBI to prove the guilt of the duo, the central agency said. Earlier government order did not ban meat sale on August 15: Awhad

While the Opposition has criticised the order, the ruling BJP has defended it, citing a 1988 state government resolution (GR) empowering civic bodies to impose such restrictions. Speaking to reporters in Solapur, Awhad also asked who gave municipal bodies the right to decide what should a citizen eat and when. Pune, Aug 13 (PTI) Amid the row over a few civic bodies in Maharashtra ordering closure of meat shops and abattoirs on August 15, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday claimed that an earlier order only spoke of closure of slaughter houses, but did not ban meat sale. Awhad said people belonging to the middle class and the poor generally consume meat on certain days like Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. 'Since August 15 is a holiday, people generally wake up at leisure, buy meat and enjoy it together as a family. It is a tradition,' the former minister said. As the BJP-led government has failed to bring about development, there is an attempt to increase communal disharmony by creating such issues, Awhad alleged. Municipal corporations of Nagpur, Nashik, Malegaon, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Kalyan-Dombivli have issued orders directing closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on Independence Day. Some of them have said these facilities will remain shut on certain other days, too, in view of Hindu and Jain festivals. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has also questioned the directive. PTI SPK KRK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
