Russian court hands US-owned food company's assets to the state
MOSCOW : A Moscow court has ruled that the assets of US-owned canned food company Glavprodukt be handed over to the Russian state, the TASS news agency reported late on Friday, following a months-long legal tussle over the company.
One participant in the court proceedings, who declined to be named, confirmed to Reuters yesterday that the court had satisfied the prosecution's claim in full with immediate effect after a six-hour court session.
The seizure of Glavprodukt, the only US company Moscow has seized, coincides with stalled attempts to reset US-Russian relations.
Glavprodukt and other assets ultimately owned by US company Universal Beverage and founder Leonid Smirnov were placed under temporary state management by presidential decree in October 2024.
Prosecutors subsequently sought to justify the seizure by arguing the measure was necessary to ensure a stable food supply in Russia, according to a letter seen by Reuters in April.
'The court ruled that the general prosecutor's case on the seizure of Glavprodukt assets and property of its head Smirnov in favour of the state be satisfied in full,' TASS quoted the court as saying. 'The decision comes into force immediately'.
Court filings showed Universal Beverage had applied for a postponement of proceedings, but no ruling was specified.
The court did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
'The decision made violates the law of Russia.
'Steps will be taken, and some have already been taken, to protect our interests, not only in Russian courts but also in American courts as well as international courts,' Smirnov told Reuters.
'Our efforts in Washington definitely will be accelerated,' he added.
Smirnov said he plans to appeal the decision in Russian courts.
He has already begun legal proceedings in the US state of Arkansas, where Alexander Tkachev has business interests.
Tkachev is a former agriculture minister and the ultimate owner of Druzhba Narodov, the company which requested the Kremlin appoint new management at Glavprodukt, Reuters reported in April.
Since being placed under state management, Glavprodukt's sales have dropped sharply, and it has posted regular monthly losses, according to documents seen by Reuters last week.
The new management team plans to boost dwindling sales with exports to China and North Korea, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and people familiar with the matter.

After Kelantan cops raided HIV outreach, three men fined RM3,000 and RM4,000 for ‘obscene' images and clips found in phones
KOTA BARU, July 20 — Three men were fined by the Magistrates' Court here today for possessing pornographic images and videos on their phones following a police raid during an HIV medical outreach event in June. Harian Metro reported that the court imposed fines of RM3,000 and RM4,000 respectively — or six months' imprisonment in default — on the trio after they pleaded guilty to the charges. 'The accused have repented and promised not to repeat the offence. Their families have also pledged to guide them on the right path,' their lawyer Samantha Chong Yin Xin reportedly told the court. Deputy Public Prosecutors Muhammad Nadzir Abdullah and Nur Haziqah Hassan had urged Magistrate Wan Mohd Izzat Wan Abdullah to impose a deterrent sentence, citing public morality and social norms. The men, aged 22, 27, and 47, were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code which handles 'sales, etc, or obscene books, etc'. The charge carried a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction. A coalition of civil society groups had previously urged Kelantan police to revise their statement on a June 2025 raid of an alleged 'gay sex party' here, which they clarified was in fact a health outreach event. The groups, led by transgender rights advocacy group Justice for Sisters, said media reports following the raid resulted in harmful and stigmatising remarks that have intensified fear among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals seeking health services. The coalition said all attendees tested negative in police-conducted urine tests, and no evidence of sexual activity or promotional content on social media was found. Three individuals were arrested over personal intimate content on their phones, which the groups described as trumped-up charges. On Friday, the MAC confirmed that it conducted a night outreach session here on June 17 under the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations model. MAC said the session was in collaboration with Kota Jembal Health Clinic and part of a strategic approach introduced by the Health Ministry. It said the session was held from 8pm to 2am and had reached over 70 high-risk individuals, with services scheduled outside office hours to improve accessibility.

MGM China confirms Hong Kong actor Jacky Heung's HK$.1.4m casino debt fully repaid
HONG KONG, July 20 — Hong Kong actor Jacky Heung has settled a gambling debt that recently landed him in legal trouble with a Macau casino operator, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. On Wednesday, MGM China confirmed that the issue had been resolved and legal proceedings were dropped, just a day after it was reported that its subsidiary MGM Grand Paradise had filed a writ against the actor in the Hong Kong District Court. 'The matter involving Mr Jacky Heung Cho arose from a credit guarantee he provided for a third party. Due to overdue payments not being made, MGM China subsequently initiated standard legal procedures to address the related matters,' the casino group said in a statement, as cited by SCMP. The court document filed on July 3 alleged that Heung had borrowed HK$2 million (RM1.08 million) from the casino on December 1, 2023, converting the amount into betting chips. He allegedly repaid only part of the sum, leaving an outstanding HK$1.4 million. While MGM's statement claimed Heung had acted as a credit guarantor, this was not mentioned in the writ, SCMP noted. The casino operator stressed that it usually refrains from commenting on its internal gaming operations, but chose to clarify the matter given the public attention it attracted. 'In view of the inconvenience and distress this incident has caused Mr Jacky Heung Cho, our company sincerely requests that all inaccurate or speculative reporting be curbed,' it added. Jacky Heung, 40, is the eldest son of veteran film producer Charles Heung, the founder of China Star Entertainment. Known for his roles in martial arts films, Heung has in recent years shifted his focus to mainland China, participating in variety shows and building a presence outside Hong Kong. Heung married Taiwanese actress and model Bea Hayden (Guo Biting) in 2019. The couple have two children.
