Sewage from Panthalkudi flows into Vaigai as STP yet to start functioning
Meanwhile, several departments have started preparatory works in the Vaigai river for the festival. The WRD department is removing invasive plants at Kalpalam and Thenur Mandapam in the Vaigai river, to facilitate free flow of water for Kallalagar entry into the river, which is scheduled on May 12.
When contacted, senior officials from the WRD department said a special drive is under way to clear the invasive plants in the river especially near Kalpalam and Thennur Mandabam. Officials added that in view of the Kallalagar festival, water would be released from Vaigai dam on May 08. M Rajan of Vaigai Makkal Iyakkam, said, 'Several thousands of people would enter the river during Kallalagar;s procession. Currently, 8 MLD untreated sewage is released through the Panthalkudi canal into the river near AV Bridge. This would cause health issues to devotees. The corporation should start operating the STP or install long pipelines and release the sewage far away from where the event takes place.'
Speaking to TNIE, Chitra Vijayan, city corporation commissioner, said the 2 MLD Panthalkudi STP work has been completed and the plant would be commissioned soon. This will prevent untreated sewage from entering the river, she added. To prevent water hyacinth from flowing into the bridge area, the WRD department has placed a boom near the bridge, she added.
District collector M S Sangeetha along with city corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan and other officials inspected the Kallalagar procession route from Tallakulam to Vaigai river on Wednesday.

Residents of Uppiliyapuram demand revival of Maradi lake
Residents and farmers of Uppiliyapuram block in Tiruchi district have urged the district administration and the Water Resources Department (WRD) to desilt and revive the 80-acre Maradi Lake, a vital water source for several villages. According to Prathap Selvam, president of the Jamberi Water Users' Association, Maradi Lake is one of five lakes in the region that receive water from Jamberi Lake — an important catchment fed by streams from the Kollimalai hills. The Jamberi Lake system plays a vital role in sustaining both irrigation and drinking water needs while also contributing to groundwater recharge in the region. Maradi Lake is particularly significant for local irrigation and domestic use in panchayats such as Kottapalayam, Maradi, Okkarai, and parts of Uppiliyapuram block. The lake irrigates around 400 acres of farmland and serves as a primary drinking water source for thousands of residents. 'In 2017, around 20 acres of the lakebed were encroached, but with community support, those encroachments were cleared,' said Mr. Selvam. 'Under the 2018 Kudimaramathu Scheme, the lake boundaries were demarcated and initial restoration work was undertaken.' However, residents allege that illegal sand extraction resumed in parts of the lakebed, reducing its water-holding capacity and shrinking green cover. 'We used to spot several birds, including peacocks, around the lake. With the degradation of the habitat, they have now disappeared,' he said. Groundwater contamination, sand smuggling, and the slow pace of intervention by authorities had caused concern among residents. Multiple complaints had been submitted to various departments. The residents have demanded that the illegal sand mining be stopped immediately, encroachments removed, and the lake restored to its original capacity. An official from the Water Resources Department acknowledged receipt of the complaint and assured that an inspection would be carried out and appropriate action taken.

Students of Madurai Corporation schools get third place in T.N. achievement survey
Students from Madurai Corporation schools have secured third place in the State-Level Achievement Survey - 2025. With the objective of encouraging children to prepare themselves on understanding skills and comprehensive reading apart from the curricula, the education department officials introduced a series of programmes which would be lively and also help the children to be creative. Recently, the authorities had conducted the survey on students from Classes 3 to 5 and 8 respectively. Though the aptitude level of the students from eighth standard in Madurai Corporation schools stood a little less, the overall reports from other classes were on top in many spheres. Hence, Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, Commissioner Chitra Vijayan and the education department officials proposed to strengthen the abilities of the students. Based on the results, the officials had introduced a baseline survey which helps identify the students' aptitude and interests. Be it on current affairs or on general knowledge, science or literature, the dissemination should be in a simple language and understandable to the students. To coach the students, the officials have chosen 10 schools, including middle and high schools, where students from Classes 6 to 8 would benefit in the first phase. In a bid to give an impetus to the programme, the senior officials from Deputy Commissioner to the City Health Officer would visit the 10 campuses on a daily basis and monitor the progress. The overall objective was to prepare the students not just with grades and marks, but to instil in them confidence that they could face challenges as they grew, the officials said.

White grub infestation in Dharmapuri sugarcane fields
DHARMAPURI: Sugarcane fields across Dharmapuri district have slowly started to turn a yellowish brown hue over the past few weeks. While one might assume this to be caused by lack of nutrients or due to arid, dry climatic conditions prevailing in Dharmapuri, but this is not the case. The aforementioned sign is one of the symptoms of the damage done by white grubs, the larvae of scarab beetles. Farmers have blamed the spread of the insect on the mills and the agriculture department's failure to identify the infestation, which is spread across the district. White grubs afflict the root of sugarcane. Speaking to TNIE, S Chinnasamy, a sugarcane farmer, said, "The two mills in the district, the Dharmapuri Cooperative Sugarmill (DCS) and the Subramaniya Siva Cooperative Sugarmill (SSCS), have affixed a total target of 12,000 acres for cane cultivation across the district. White grubs have been feeding off the roots of the sugarcane, leading to the wilting of our sugarcane. Farmers stand to lose their sugarcanes. The situation is dire, especially considering the investments we have put into the cultivation. Each farmer has invested somewhere between Rs 20,000 per acre for cultivation, and if the infestation is not curbed, we stand to face massive losses". G Murali, a farmer from Morappur, said, "The white grub infestation should have been identified much earlier. Even the fields cultivated by the SSCS are affected. The lack of timely awareness is the cause of the infestation. While it is true that we have faced these insects in the past, most farmers are struggling to control the spread of insects. So it is only a matter of time till we lose our crops".
