Furious Stephen Colbert rips Paramount bosses live on air for settling $16m lawsuit with Trump

Daily Mail5 days ago
Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert went nuclear on his parent corporation, Paramount, after the company settled a bombshell lawsuit with Donald Trump for a whopping $16 million.
Trump accused Paramount's network, CBS, which also airs The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, of falsely editing an interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris before the election.
Although the network didn't admit to any journalistic wrongdoing, the massive settlement will cover Trump's legal fees and his future presidential library.
Paramount also agreed to release unedited transcripts of 60 Minutes interviews with presidential candidates.
Colbert didn't hesitate to take shots at his parent corporation, confessing in his opening monologue on Wednesday's episode that he was 'offended' by the actions of his employer.
The late night host called the lawsuit against CBS a 'nuisance,' and claimed that Paramount could've 'easily fought it' citing the company's own words calling the allegations 'completely without merit.'
'And keep in mind Paramount produced Transformers: Rise of the Beast. They know "completely without merit,"' Colbert joked, poking fun at the Paramount+ film that bombed at the box office.
Colbert then cited a phony statement, joking that the network said, 'You may take our money, but you will never take our dignity.
'You may, however, purchase our dignity for the low, low, price of $16 million. We need the cash.'
Colbert argued that the settlement was a 'big, fat, bribe,' in light of the company's merger with Skydance, which will need approval from the Trump administration.
The late night host then cited an article from Puck, that claimed the merger could 'put pressure' on him to ease up on Trump criticisms.
Colbert brushed off the gossip, joking that his new mustache will make it impossible for the new executives to find and put pressure on him.
Daily Mail reached out to Paramount for comment in response to Colbert's claims.
CBS has undergone executive changes as an $8 billion merger with David Ellison's Skydance remains on the table.
David's father, Larry Ellison, is a multi-billionaire and Trump supporter. He joined the president at the White House in January for the unveiling of a project called Stargate and is providing the $8 billion for the CBS deal, according to the New York Times.
The merger agreement was announced last July, but has stalled. A 90-day extension was issued a few weeks ago to give the parties more time to come to an agreement.
Paramount heiress Shari Redstone has reportedly been pushing for the deal and was in favor of settling the lawsuit.
Colbert isn't the only employee at Paramount upset with the recent business dealings.
CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon announced her resignation in May, writing in a memo, 'It's become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward.'
'It's time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership.'
Former 60 Minutes boss Bill Owens also resigned after he opposed the settlement with the president.
Owens resigned in April amid the turmoil after serving as the program's executive producer since 2019.
'Over the past months, it has become clear that I would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it,' he wrote at the time.
Under Owens' leadership, 60 Minutes interviewed Harris which prompted the lawsuit from Trump.
In the interview, Harris was asked about the war in Gaza and her response was edited down. The network defended the decision at the time, arguing that it was edited to fit the program's time constraint.
After the lawsuit was settled, Trump's legal team issued a statement that read, 'With this record settlement, President Donald J. Trump delivers another win for the American people as he, once again, holds the Fake News media accountable for their wrongdoing and deceit.'
'CBS and Paramount Global realized the strength of this historic case and had no choice but to settle.
'President Trump will always ensure that no one gets away with lying to the American People as he continues on his singular mission to Make America Great Again.'
The settlement marks another win for Trump's legal crusade against the media. ABC News agreed to a settlement of $15 million in December after the president accused anchor George Stephanopoulos of making false claims about him on air.

Soap icon Eileen Fulton dies at age of 91 as family confirm sad death

Actress Eileen Fulton has sadly died at the age of 91. The iconic star was best known for her work as the first bad girl of daytime television for her role as Lisa Miller in As the World Turns. Eileen sadly passed away on 14 July in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 91 following a period of declining health, her family confirmed on the Groce Funeral Home website, sharing that her funeral service will be held on August 9. Eileen first appeared in As the World Turns in May 1960, remaining in the cast until the CBS show went off air in September 2010. Her 50-year stint on the series made her one of the longest-starring soap actors in US TV history, despite the role initially being created as a short-term character. Eileen - whose real name was Margaret Elizabeth McLarty - was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and received a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Eileen was raised in Asheville and moved to New York to pursue an acting career after graduating from Greensboro College with a music degree in 1956. While in NYC she studied with famed acting coaches Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg at the Neighborhood Playhouse, as well as dance teacher Martha Graham, and her feature debut came in 1960 in Girl of the Night. Eileen was also a writer and singer and performed a cabaret act for years in venues in both New York and Los Angeles. At one point during her time on As the World Turns - which was then broadcast live - she was also appearing on Broadway in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf and in off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks. She co-wrote her first autobiography, How My World Turns, in 1970 and jointly wrote her second, As My World Still Turns, 25 years later. Eileen also wrote a series of murder-mystery books and a novel titled Soap Opera. She retired in 2019 and moved back to North Carolina. Eileen is survived by her brother, Charles Furman McLarty, niece Katherine Morris and their children, and her sister-in-law Chris Page McLarty. Instead of flowers, Eileen's family has asked for donations to be made to the Reverend James B. McLarty Music Scholarship, or the Margaret Glenn McLarty '28 and Eileen Fulton Music Scholarship Fund.

Jelly Roll shows off weight loss as he guest hosts Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Jelly Roll displayed his slimmer figure when he guest hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! for two nights this week. The star, 40, filled in for the late-night talk show host and debuted his slimmest look yet after losing 200lb. He wore all black for the gig, adding a gold chain to his look. Jelly poked fun at himself on Thursday's episode, treating fans to a parody song made up of insults hurled at him on the Internet. He said: 'I've never been the one to let my haters get me down. So tonight I'm going to debut my brand new single, and this entire song is going to be made up of comments that people have written about me online. Y'all want to hear it?' Some of the digs that made up the song included: 'Being forced to listen to Jelly Roll against my will and it sucks,' 'I used to hate Jelly Roll. I still do,' and 'Jelly Roll looks like a meth addict grabbed a microphone.' The good-humored entertained also quoted a social media snub that said, 'Jelly Roll slimmed the f*** up, lookin' more like a Fruit Roll-Up.' 'I wanna be on the cover of Men's Health by March of 2026. That's my new goal,' he announced five months ago. 'I wanna have one of the biggest transformations.' He added that he was 'so glad' to be having the discussion in front of an audience. 'I did this publicly for a reason. I wanna be honest about my struggles with it with people,' he noted. The musician explained about body image and fame: 'I think that people that become as big as I became, when they lose the weight, they're kind of ashamed. 'They're so ashamed that they go hide and lose the weight, and then they come back out [and] they don't really know how to interact with the world looking different or feeling different, and they kinda gotta find their whole new way. 'I wanted to lose it in front of everybody. I wanted to talk about it.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jelly Roll (@jellyroll615) Jelly added about losing weight in the spotlight: 'I wanna bring people along with me…I didn't become successful because of my weight. I became successful in spite of it.' He also acknowledged, 'I somehow managed to be this successful with carrying 550 pounds. That's insane.'

Kelly Clarkson joined onstage by daughter River Rose, 11, for song during Vegas show

Kelly Clarkson's daughter, River Rose, joined the star on stage for a surprise performance during her Las Vegas residency on Friday. The 43-year-old singer and the 11-year-old thrilled fans while performing a duet at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The sweet mother-daughter duo sang Clarkson's 'Heartbeat Song' while wearing matching bedazzled t-shirts and bell bottom pants in a video shared on X. Kelly and River were seen swaying together while holding microphones. At one point the proud mom hugged her daughter, whom she shares with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, 48. The pair also had a son Remington Alexander Blackstock, nine. The fan who posted the clip revealed that Clarkson told the audience before the duet: 'So my daughter River Rose said to me, "I wanna sing tonight!"' Clarkson and her daughter previously performed the song together during a Las Vegas concert in August 2023. At the time the singer noted that River had been 'jamming out to the song since she was a baby.' She added that her daughter 'loves this song so much.' The performer announced her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace earlier this year in February. It came after she hosted a residency at Planet Hollywood Resort from 2023-2024. This year's residency had been slated to kick off on Fourth of July followed by another performance the next day. Clarkson officially kicked off her much-awaited Vegas residency last Friday - just one week after angering fans by canceling shows last minute. Along with performing hits for the crowd, the star also apologized for canceling the opening two shows of her residency. In a TikTok video taken by a concertgoer, Clarkson expressed, 'Man, I'm so sorry if some of y'all had [tickets to] last weekend's shows. 'I'm so sorry. We can't help our bodies sometimes, and that happens, but thank you for showing up. We're so excited.'
