ISCO Championship will play at its new home in Louisville for the first time in 2025
Louisville will host the ISCO Championship for the first time in 2025. The PGA Tour event is scheduled July 10-13 at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. For the last six years, it was at Keene Trace Golf Club near Lexington. 'Attending the ISCO Championship is not just about seeing top-tier professional golf — it's about being part of an atmosphere that's electric, energizing, and uniquely Kentucky,' Jimmy Kirchdorfer, chairman and CEO of ISCO Industries, the tournament's title sponsor, said in a news release. Harry Hall won his first PGA Tour trophy at the 2024 ISCO Championship. The tournament is a FedEx Cup event and debuted on the PGA Tour schedule in 2015. For the first few years, it was played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Auburn/Opelika, Alabama, before moving to the Bluegrass State. The ISCO Championship has a $4 million purse, and the winner receives 300 FedEx Cup points. Defending champ Harry Hall will not defend, as he is instead playing in the Genesis Scottish Open, held on the same dates. 2025 ISCO Championship field

Horse racing trainer rides off in a new direction
As career changes go, it is a pretty dramatic one. After more than 20 years as a horse racing trainer, James Ewart has decided to give up the sport to focus on his renewable energy business. He has sent out countless winners from his yard at Langholm in the south of Scotland. However, with a young family he said now the time was right to steer his career in a new direction. It has been a long journey in the sport for the 46-year-old and his wife Briony, who has worked alongside him at the yard. "I rode in my first race when I was 16 and I rode my last race probably when I was about 24," said James. "We've invested an awful lot of money in the yard, putting in really good facilities and we weren't really seeing the dividend. "It's an existence living at best and the problem is that there is no certainty or security as a trainer." He said having a young family made him realise that it was time to change from a career which was "very selfish" with his hours and created a "lot of financial stress". "I think now is the time to change direction where I'm still luckily young enough that I can," he said. That direction is renewable energy - but with a nod to his love of horse racing. "I set up a company about three years ago called ESB Scotland, bizarrely enough, named after the racehorse that beat Devon Loch in the Grand National," he explained. "It's a renewable energy company and we've been developing sites." They have been looking at battery storage projects and have got "quite a long way down the road" with two - one at Harker in Cumbria and another at Coalburn in South Lanarkshire. Despite the differences in the field, he said, there were some things racing could help him with in his new life. "We've been learning on the job and that's probably what racing teaches you because in life, I would say, almost everybody to a certain degree learns from their failures and mistakes," he said. "In racing, if you're really successful over a season of 12 months, you have a strike rate of roughly 20% - which means you lose 80% of the time. "But that time losing is the time where you create winners because you learn what you need to do." He said it was "exactly the same" in many walks of life, including renewable energy with its planning and connection applications. "It's peculiarly complicated and you keep bashing away and you learn from your failures," he said. "If one option doesn't work, you look at another option, so I guess resilience is probably what racing has taught us." Among the highlights of his career was getting four winners on one day at two different courses which he described as "quite good". Nice horses like Sa Suffit, Quicuyo and Aristo du Plessis are another fond memory along with breaking the track record at Doncaster with Beneficial Reform. He said: "We enjoyed every winner, you know, it's a way of life, isn't it? "It's very pleasurable training in the morning, doing the work and seeing the horses, building relationships with staff and with the owners. "Those are all the best parts of the game aren't they? "And there's some wonderful, wonderful people in racing - wonderful characters, really talented individuals." He said some of the staff at the yard would now go to work for other trainers and others were going abroad. However, although he is turning his back on the sport, he said his experience had been a positive one. "It's a fantastic sport, I love it to bits," he said. "The truth was, if I didn't have to make a decision I would be staying where I am. Blackmore's history-making exploits inspiring to all: de Bromhead
Rachael Blackmore's groundbreaking exploits as a jockey have "inspired people to follow their dreams" Henry de Bromhead, the trainer with whom she teamed up to make history, told AFP on Tuesday. Blackmore caught people -- including de Bromhead -- by surprise announcing she was retiring with immediate effect on Monday. The 35-year-old Irish sporting star would be best known to a global audience having become the first woman jockey to win the world's greatest steeplechase, the Grand National, in 2021 on Minella Times. She also retires as the only woman jockey to have won all four of the Cheltenham Festival's major races. She won two Champion Hurdles -- on the race mare she adored Honeysuckle (2021/22) -- the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup on A Plus Tard and the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Captain Guinness in 2024. She completed the sweep with victory in this year's Stayers Hurdle on Bob Ollinger. For good measure Blackmore -- who turned professional in 2015 -- became in 2021 the first woman jockey to be crowned leading jockey at the festival with six winners, she rode 18 in all. Blackmore, whose mother Eimir said she knew she was blessed with an adventurous spirit as even as a baby she climbed out of her cot regularly, always played down being a woman jockey. De Bromhead agreed that her achievements were an inspiration to all and sundry. "I do not think she likes to focus on that (being a woman)," he told AFP by phone. "She has definitely inspired a lot of people to follow their dreams. "That grit and determination can help you realise them whether you are male or female." De Bromhead said it was hard to quantify what they had achieved together since he brought her on board on a permanent basis in the 2018/19 campaign. "Even if you read it now or watch replays it is pinch yourself stuff. "When we both set out we never thought we would achieve all that. "It is incredible," said de Bromhead before adding with his trademark humility she was the rider, he was the front man as the trainer but there was a "massive team, a lot of cogs behind it (the success)." - 'All the attributes' - For de Bromhead the most memorable moment in their extraordinary journey together was not the Grand National -- though he said her ride was "amazing" on Minella Times "she could see round corners that day" -- nor the marquee races at Cheltenham. It was Honeysuckle's emotion-packed farewell win in the 2023 Mares' Hurdle at the Festival. It came months after de Bromhead's 13-year-old son Jack died as a result of a fall from a horse. "Honeysuckle's win that day both for personal and professional reasons," he said. "It was massive for me and massive for her (Blackmore)." De Bromhead, 52, said the reason he took her on was because he liked "her profile, she had come up the hard way and showed her determination," that despite not enjoying immediate success she "had not stopped riding". He said Blackmore, who was known for riding out and then going to help her farmer father milk 100 cows, brought a lot to the table in the partnership. "Her work ethic stood out and her attention to detail," he said. "She had natural ability, plus humility as she knew what it took to get to the top. "She was also a really good reader of a race, she was fitter and stronger than anyone else, she had all the attributes." De Bromhead says he does not know her reasons for bowing out but "she would have thought everything through" and whilst it must have been tough as she "loved the game" she is going out "at the top." Some trainer/jockey relationships can be fraught and end on a sour note but not this one. "She is a lovely lady," said de Bromhead. "She is a friend of ours, she is great to my family and we all adore her." pi/nr
