Martin's men secure progression with a battling draw in Greece
Proud Russell Martin hailed his Rangers team for booking Euro group stage football - but says he's now dreaming of the Champions League.

The Ibrox men fought out a 1-1 draw in Athens against Panathinaikos to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Djeidi Gassama came off the bench to cancel out Filip Duricic's opener - and silence the home crowd in the Olympic Stadium.

Martin's side now have guaranteed group phase football to look forward to, whether it's in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference.
But after progressing to the third qualifying round of Europe's top competition - where they'll face Czech side Viktoria Plzen - the Gers boss insist they'll shoot for the stars and try to earn a spot among the big boys.
Martin was delighted with the character his players showed in the Athens heat.
And when asked if he's now aiming for Champions League qualification, he said: 'Yeah. I think my job as head coach here is to always want more from the players.
'So, I'm really pleased tonight that we've qualified - but I have to want more in terms of the performance and what we're doing.
'We have to be better. So I said to the players, I'm so proud of them but we have to get better - and we will get better.

'I really believe that. We're here at a football club that demands we try to win every game we play.
'It's part of the reason we're all here so we'll give it our very best shot and attack the Champions League the best we can to see where it takes us.'

It was a huge night for Martin in his first Euro tie as Rangers manager.
His team were under the cosh at times in Athens and fell behind to Duricic's opener.
But they showed terrific resilience to stand firm and then a moment of magic from Gassama took them through.

Afterwards, Martin heaped praise on his players who have taken on his new ideas and way of playing.
He said: 'I'm incredibly proud of the team and the staff - and the fans were amazing.
'It's a big night for us. Listen, we were playing a really good team in a really difficult place to play.

'Over the two games Panathinaikos were very good. It was probably the toughest draw we could have got. So they were always going to have moments in the game.
'We didn't start both legs well enough in the first half but at half- time tonight, the players composed themselves and did exactly what I asked of them.
'After conceding the goal, it was the best response from us.

'They stuck together, they fought, they dug in - and in the second half we played some really good football as well.
'We should have had a few more moments ourselves. But we'll get better and the players will grow so much from that.
'I'm so proud of everyone. I said to the players before the game, at this club you have an opportunity not many people get to have nights like this, really brilliant moments.

'I told them to make the most of it and I'm really proud of them.'
can give his players a huge injection of belief in what he's trying to do ahead of the campaign.
He said: 'The second half tonight will help the team grow so much.
'I've told them, early on is as hard as it will ever get because you have to learn, you have to feel it and go through it.
'We've got through a really difficult tie over two legs with a win and we've got group stage football.
'We can now attack the Champions League and have a right go.'

Alan Shearer gives brutally honest verdict on Man Utd's Benjamin Sesko transfer

Newcastle have been looking to land Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig but look to have lost out to Manchester United in what is their latest transfer blow this summer Alan Shearer concedes it is "disappointing again from Newcastle" if they do lose out on Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United - given the hugely superior season they had in comparison to their rivals. ‌ The Magpies enjoyed a historic year as Eddie Howe led them to their first trophy in more than half a century and also secured a return to the Champions League. Those in Manchester meanwhile endured their worst ever Premier League season, finishing 15th. ‌ Newcastle also enjoyed a dominant double over the Red Devils - securing an aggregate win of 6-1 across the two games - yet their most ambitious summer target looks to have expressed a preference to join United. ‌ Sesko has continued to blossom at RB Leipzig and is viewed among the best young strikers in Europe. Newcastle acted first in an effort to land the Slovenian, who they see as the ideal replacement for Alexander Isak, but the Manchester outfit have now swooped in and look to have won the race. Shearer is frustrated that another marquee target looks to have passed Newcastle by as they fail to build on one of the club's great seasons. He told Betfair: "It sounds as if Benjamin Sesko had two clubs to choose from in Newcastle and Man United. One that won a trophy last year and is now playing Champions League football this season - and one that didn't win anything, finished 15th and had a dreadful season. "I understand that Man United are a huge football club, not so much a huge football team at this moment in time. I get it. I understand it. It looks as if, by all accounts, he prefers a move to Man United. It's disappointing again from Newcastle, another target it looks like they're going to miss out on and I said it about a week ago, it looks as if it's been a disastrous window for Newcastle." Howe has continued to miss out on key targets which means Newcastle have struggled to strengthen their squad ahead of their second crack at the Champions League. Antony Elanga, signed from Nottingham Forest for £55million, is their only new recruit. They've seen the likes of Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and James Trafford all head for other clubs despite Newcastle's interest being well documented. The biggest blow could yet come in the form of Isak's exit with the Swede informing the club he wants to leave as Liverpool circle. Son Heung-min completes move to Los Angeles from Tottenham in MLS record deal

It was revealed on Saturday that Son would depart Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. After an agreement between Tottenham and LAFC was struck for a deal in excess of £20million, the 33-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday and a day later he has finalised his transfer, which is the highest fee paid by an MLS club for a player. In a post to Spurs fans on Instagram, Son, who has signed an initial two-year deal with LAFC with options for a further two, wrote: 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go. 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. Dear Spurs fans… Sonny's letter to you 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 6, 2025 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour.' Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. After a tough debut campaign the South Korea captain went on to become one of the club's best ever players and made himself a Premier League great in the process. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. The Chuncheon-born attacker also won the league's Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season after scoring 23 times and he sits 17th in the list of all-time scorers in the division with 127 goals. Under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, Son's consistent displays helped turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders but silverware continued to allude them after a second-placed finish in 2017 was followed by a Champions League runner-up spot two years later. Whilst various members of Pochettino's team left not long after the Argentinian's winter departure in 2019, Son stayed to work under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte before he was tasked with leading a new era by Ange Postecoglou. Son Enjoyed a formidable partnership with Harry Kane (Andrew Matthews/PA) Postecoglou named Son as his captain in the wake of Kane's high-profile switch to Bayern Munich and Hugo Lloris' departure from the first team and after a roller coaster two seasons under the Australian, they achieved the holy grail together on May 21. Son was consigned to a place on the bench in Bilbao for the Europa League final against Manchester United following an injury-affected campaign, but was introduced to make his final competitive appearance for Spurs to help them win 1-0 and end a 17-year wait for silverware. It etched Son's name into the history books as he became only the fourth captain in Spurs' history to lift a European trophy after Danny Blanchflower, Alan Mullery and Steve Perryman. The popular South Korean will renew acquaintances with Lloris and move to Los Angeles, which boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the world, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States.
