Comedian Melanie Bracewell to perform her show A Little Treat at The Regal Theatre on Friday, May 16

West Australian10-05-2025
For popular comedian Melanie Bracewell, travelling to WA from the east coast of Australia is like an international trip.
'I won't forget how far away (Perth) is because I'm from New Zealand and it is quicker for me to get home than it is to get to WA,' she said.
'But when I go to Perth I really try to make the most of it, it feels like an international trip for me.
'I have a few family members there as well. It's always nice to catch up with them.'
The 29-year-old will perform her one-hour show A Little Treat at The Regal Theatre on Friday, bringing a chaotic night in her life to the stage.
'The show is basically about my lack of self control which I have now pinned down to actually being diagnosed with ADHD,' she said.
'It's about one evening of my life that went a bit chaotic and led to me finally the next morning booking to get an ADHD assessment — so it's me recounting that evening. It's been so fun to perform.'
Bracewell also believes she is the only person in Australia and New Zealand to still be playing Candy Crush. Her pre-show ritual consists of doing and re-doing her eyeliner 'about 15 times', listening to a recording of the show she is about to perform and a quick go on the colourful, candy matching game from 2012.
'Right before I go on stage, I am playing Candy Crush on my phone, it's just another mind-numbing thing that helps me not panic or think about the crowd,' she said.
'I know it's kind of pathetic. I think I'm on about level 4000, it's actually quite sad.'
One of the Auckland native's favourite moments from her current tour was from one of her Adelaide shows in February, when an audience member totally misunderstood a question the comedian asked her.
'I talk a bit about netball in my show and so I've been chatting to audience members about netball and I asked 'Who played netball?'' she recalled. 'This girl in my Adelaide show, I said 'What's your position?' and she said 'I'm an admin consultant for a construction company'.'
The spontaneity of stand-up comedy is one reason Bracewell loves her job, but she also gets to provide the laughs on the TV show she hosts, The Cheap Seats, alongside Tim McDonald.
The show has entered its fifth season this year and while some may perceive a love-hate relationship between the pair, Bracewell said none of the 'piss-taking' was serious.
'We have such a good relationship because we really can sledge each other because we know we have a deep respect for each other, (although) I hope you're not interviewing him and he goes I hate Mel,' she said.
'None of it is serious, it's all just entertainment, I think that's my love language as well, when people rip into me or I can rip into someone else, that's how I know we're friends.'
After her tour wraps up, Bracewell plans to stay busy with the Channel 10 show, saying many were surprised to learn the pair write it themselves.
'Tim and I write the show, like we don't just turn up and read an autocue,' she said. 'Tim and I find most of the clips. We have a couple of researchers who submit some suggestions, but Tim and I will come in on Monday and be like 'This is what I've watched; This is what I've seen' and I think it helps the show with the authenticity of it because we know that we both find it's very funny.
'We're not just presenting this to an audience and asking some writer to put this together, and we're just gonna say it out loud and take all the credit for it. We really believe in it.'
She also hoped to finally get a sitcom off the ground.
'I am trying to work on writing a sitcom. I mean, I probably talk more about writing a sitcom than I have spent actually writing a sitcom,' she said.
'It's a real goal of mine. I love TV so much, and I think it'd be a great challenge to put together a fiction show from scratch.'
At one point during our interview, Bracewell was kicked out of the room she was speaking from and almost forgot her swipe card that ensured she didn't get locked out of the building.
After some pauses and a brief, awkward interaction at her end, Bracewell reassured me she was now in the privacy of the hallway
'As you can probably tell, I'm quite a chaotic person. Stand-up has made me embrace that more and view it as a positive,' she said.
'I end up having interesting stories because I don't think things through very well, and I reflect on it well.'
Our chat is interrupted again, by a man kindly handing back her Apple AirPods case she left in the room she was booted from.
That reminded Bracewell of the last show she toured 'about me tracking down my AirPods that someone had stolen and used'.
At least this time, 'quite poignantly', she had them swiftly returned.
As our interview ended, Bracwell wished me luck in translating our conversation into written form.

MasterChef Australia winner Laura Sharrad reveals filming two endings was ‘weird'

MasterChef Australia winner Laura Sharrad has given a peek behind the curtain on the unnatural finale filming process. The Adelaide-based restaurateur finally took out the title on Tuesday night's Channel 10 finale, proving third time's a charm after twice placing runner-up on previous all-star seasons. Speaking to Sharrad confirmed she and fellow finale competitor Callum Hann had to film alternate endings at the Melbourne kitchen late last year, a process many viewers deem 'cruel', with the pair having to fake both winning and losing scenarios following an hours-long battle. 'It's funny because the first time I did this [MasterChef] there was two endings, so I kind of knew what was going to happen,' Sharrad said. 'It's like, 'One of you will go first, one of you wins first, you do a winning speech, and then the confetti gets picked up, we reload the confetti gun, and then you do round two'. 'And then you obviously do a losing speech as well. So a bit of acting is required. My acting skills aren't great. We're cooks, we'll never make it as actors. Let's be real. 'It's a very, very weird thing, but I think it's the best thing to do to protect the show and nothing leaking. 'It's such a long production, and everyone works so hard to get to the end. I know some people will say it's a little bit cruel that you don't really know what's happening, but it's the best way to keep the secret and to make sure everyone's hard work pays off.' Laura later found out she was the winner, in much less fanatic circumstances, shortly after the last episode was shot. 'It was a very casual conversation with the producers and Callum and myself, that was it,' she said. 'A very small amount of people in a room. And we just got told … They were just like, 'Laura, you're our winner.' 'So it was very casual. But it was nice to also have that moment with Callum, just the two of us there. We both have been runner up, so we both know that feeling. We've gone through the competition twice together. So, you know, as lovely as it would have been to have that moment in real time, just to have that one-on-one time with Callum was really special.' As part of her winning package, Laura – who runs two restaurants in her home city – is still waiting on the $250,000 cash prize to hit her bank account. Once that happens, she has a very relatable plan for what to do with it. 'I'm going to take a screenshot of my bank account, just so I've got that memento forever,' she said. And then? 'I actually don't know. I've had a little while to think about what I'm going to do with it and I'm stuck,' she admitted. 'If anyone's got any suggestions, let me know. But I think I'll just sit on it for a while and just look at it. And I think if something comes up at the right time, whether it's a venture business-wise … But I'll let it do its own thing and just forget about it for a little while.' Returning to the kitchen for a third time in a bid to finally take out the crown, things were very different for Laura for the latest season, having welcomed her first child, daughter Florence, with her husband Max in April last year. She was still breastfeeding her newborn during filming, confessing to barely having slept amid motherhood and her busy MasterChef schedule. 'The two times before this it was just me there and I felt like I could really give myself to the process, but this time was definitely harder,' Laura said. 'I have an amazing support system. We had a wonderful nanny who was with me while we were filming. I was still breastfeeding literally the whole season as well. Physically, I felt like I couldn't fully commit. 'Honestly, looking back, I'm like, I was mad. What was I doing? But it's so funny, when I slept I didn't cook well at all, and then when I had like one or two hours sleep I was like, I'm on.' She mustn't have slept too well before the finale, then, with a laser-focused Laura delivering near-perfect dishes. 'I was probably the calmest I think I've ever been in that kitchen,' she said. 'And no one would believe me. When I told my friends last night, they were like, 'you're not calm, you're chaos.' But there was just weird energy that came over me. 'My brain was kind of telling my body, there's one shot at this, this is it. You've said you're not going back [as a contestant]. This is your last opportunity. You just go in there and do whatever you can to take it out.'

‘In the next few months': Channel 10 set to revive Millionaire Hot Seat in latest ratings gamble

Channel 10 is understood to be reviving Millionaire Hot Seat as part of the broadcaster's bold attempt to compete in the ratings. Hot Seat originally enjoyed a long run on Channel 9 as a spin-off of the game show staple Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? until it ended in 2023. Both series were memorably presented by Eddie McGuire, with Hot Seat serving as a shortened version of the original program. A casting call for trivia enthusiasts keen to take on the Hot Seat surfaced on Monday, with Ten understood to be taking on the program for its primetime line up in 2026. The new Hot Seat will be shot in Melbourne this September, with the callout encouraging all 'energetic, confident trivia lovers from all walks of life' to apply. Curio Pictures—owned by Sony—is confirmed to be producing the revival for Ten but no information has surfaced about who could be taking on hosting duties for the revival. Sony Pictures Television holds the global rights to the Millionaire format, which has spawned over 100 international variations. It is understood the new game show will not impact Ten's other primetime game show Deal or No Deal, which will continue airing for now in its new 7pm slot. Game shows have emerged as a reliable ratings winner for free-to-air broadcasters amid a general decline in audiences. Unliked scripted programming, which has become prohibitively expensive for Aussie networks, game shows can be produced relatively cheaply, with multiple episodes 'taped' in a single day. Ten declined to address media inquiries about Millionaire Hot Seat but told that 2026 programming announcements will be made at the channel's annual upfront event. 'We look forward to making the 2026 content announcements for both 10 and Paramount+, at our Upfront presentation in the next few months,' Ten told in a statement.

Tim Burton 'knew' Jenna Ortega was perfect for Wednesday

Tim Burton "knew right away" that Jenna Ortega was the perfect candidate to play Wednesday Addams. The 22-year-old actress plays the titular character in Wednesday, the hit Netflix series, and Tim never had any doubts that she would succeed in the role. Tim, 66 - who directs and executive produces the series - told The Independent: "You can't just ask somebody to do Wednesday Addams. They have to have it in their DNA. "Jenna reminds me a bit of what Winona [Ryder] had when I first met her on Beetlejuice. That silent movie actor thing, where they don't have to say anything. You just have Jenna stare at you, and you knew right away that was Wednesday." Tim is best known for his work in the film industry, directing hits such as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. But he's also enjoyed the "spontaneous approach" of TV directing. He shared: "You don't have time to brood, or overthink things." And unlike some filmmakers, Tim doesn't have any worries about working with a streaming company. He said: "I'm pretty haphazard about how and what I choose to make – as you could tell by my career. I just kind of go, 'Ooh, I'll do that. That seems interesting.' I don't overly think about my legacy – or my tombstone." Meanwhile, Jenna previously revealed that she became an "unhappy person" after season one of Wednesday. The actress became an international star on the back of her appearances in the Netflix show - but Jenna initially struggled to cope with the pressures of fame and success. She told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person. "After the pressure, the attention - as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary." Jenna now serves as a producer on Wednesday and she's loving the experience of having a hands-on role with the show. Jenna - who has become one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood in recent years - said: "I sit in on meetings and listen and learn. I'm still finding my footing in that area."
