Hoardings, banners with ‘Antim Johar' message put up in Ranchi to pay tributes to Shibu Soren
Soren, who was undergoing treatment at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month for kidney-related problems, died at the age of 81 on Monday.
At Ranchi's Karamtoli Chowk, a large hoarding was put up, displaying a message, in Hindi, 'Antim Johar…Vinamra Shradhanjali Jharkhand Rajya Nirmata Disom Guru Shibu Soren' (Last Salutation…Humble tributes to Jharkhand state creator Dishom Guru Shibu Soren).
'Jharkhand has never seen a leader like Shibu Soren. His contribution to Jharkhand will always be in the heart of every citizen of the state,' Ramesh Hansda (45), a commuter, said after noticing the large hoarding at Karamtoli.
JMM supporters and followers of Shibu Soren have been making a beeline at his Morabadi residence since morning to have a last glimpse of their leader.
Mortal remains of Shibu Soren will be brought to the Jharkhand assembly, where ministers, legislators and other dignitaries will pay their homage this morning, and his body will be taken to his native village Nemra in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, where the last rites of the Rajya Sabha MP will be performed, a JMM leader said.
All government schools have been closed on Tuesday, while most of the private educational institutes have also declared a holiday in honour of the former CM.
Business associations, such as the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI), have appealed to traders to keep their shops and establishments shut in respect of Guruji.

State has used up 60% of its groundwater, Rajya Sabha told
Bhopal: The state has extracted nearly 60% of its groundwater reserves, placing it among the country's most water-stressed states, Rajya Sabha was informed. The state's extraction rate is higher than those of neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The state ranks 12th nationally in terms of groundwater extraction as a percentage of total available resources. Punjab recorded the highest stage of groundwater extraction, followed by Rajasthan. The data was shared on Aug 4 by the Union minister of state for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, in response to a written query from MPs Subhash Barala, Mayankkumar Nayak, Kesridevsinh Jhala and Narayana Koragappa. The Rajya Sabha members had sought details on the status of groundwater across states, pollution levels, and measures being taken to address the crisis. Choudhary replied that assessment of dynamic groundwater resources of each state/UT was being carried out on an annual basis jointly by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), and the concerned state nodal/ground water departments. The stage of groundwater extraction (SoE), which is defined as a ratio of annual groundwater extraction over annual extractable groundwater resources for the whole country, has arrived at 60.47%. It may be recalled that 'Dynamic Groundwater Resources of Madhya Pradesh 2024' report had revealed that groundwater extraction in parts of Madhya Pradesh, including its major cities, Bhopal and Indore has reached alarming levels. The industrial capital Indore was rated in "critical", while Bhopal was under "semi-critical" category and had extracted close to 80 per cent of groundwater. The state's Malwa region overall was rated in the critical category. The report stated out of the total 317 assessment units (hydrogeological units), 225 assessment units fall in the safe category, 61 assessment units fall under semi-critical, 5 in critical and 26 fall in the over exploited category.

Opposition pulls out former Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar's remarks to counter government over SIR debate
Countering the government's arguments against holding a debate on the ongoing special intensive revision of Bihar electoral rolls, the Opposition on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) cited former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's remarks in the Upper House that the Parliament is entitled to discuss everything. It also referred to previous instances when debates were held on electoral reforms and functioning of the Election Commission. The government has cited a ruling by former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar that the functioning of an autonomous body such as the Election Commission cannot be deliberated in the House. Parliament Monsoon Session Day 12 highlights Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Deputy Chairman Harivansh where he quoted Mr. Dhankhar's remarks of July 21, 2023. The former Chairman had said that the Parliament is 'entitled to discuss everything under the planet with one restriction…' This restriction relates to the conduct of any judge of the Supreme Court or of a High Court in the discharge of his ties '... except upon a motion for presenting an address to the President praying for the removal of the judge...' Mr. Kharge claimed that the former Chairman had ruled that 'the concept of sub judice is totally misconceived'. 'You will undoubtedly appreciate that the Chair is a continuing entity. You yourself have quoted rulings given by the Chair over the past many years in support of some of your decisions. It is clear from this ruling of the Chair that the Rajya Sabha is entitled to discuss the issue of revision of electoral rolls, which is of fundamental importance in our democracy,' Mr. Kharge said in his letter. 'We have been urging the Speaker, Chairman, and the government again and again that the voting rights of people should not be stolen.... That is what is happening in the SIR exercise,' he said. Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose said they will continue protests inside and outside Parliament over the SIR issue. DMK leader Tiruchi Siva said they will take the message to the people on what is happening in Parliament. 'Having full trust in this temple of democracy, we are insisting on a debate on SIR. On that basis, the EC, by way of revising electoral rolls, is disqualifying many from having voting rights,' he said. John Brittas of the CPI(M) said, 'Voters list is the cornerstone of a democracy, if it is manipulated, the very essence of democracy will be corrupted. Anything that concerns the democracy of a country needs to be debated in Parliament.' AAP leader Sandeep Pathak noted that half of the Monsoon Session had been washed out and the blame lay at the government's door as it has been shying away from such an important debate. He said it was impossible to procure the documents needed for the SIR in the timeline set by the poll officials. Previous instances Earlier, Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, in a post on X, listed out previous instances when electoral reforms and functioning of the Election Commission were debated in Parliament — in 1961, the Rajya Sabha held a debate on amendments to the Conduct of Elections Rules; in 1991, the Upper House debated the urgent need to amend the existing election laws; in 2015 a Calling Attention Motion was moved by Rajya Sabha LoP Ghulam Nabi Azad on proxy and e-postal voting for NRIs; and in 2019, a short-duration discussion was held on electoral reforms. 'There is ample precedent. The government must not delay the long overdue and essential discussion on electoral reforms,' Mr. Gogoi said. The Opposition has said that the government should allow for a debate on electoral reforms in Parliament.

MPs demand more trains from Bihar
Patna: Rajya Sabha member Bhim Singh met railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday and demanded direct Gaya-Surat and Gaya-Delhi trains. He also demanded a daily run of the Udhna-Danapur Express. He also demanded a Vande Bharat sleeper train from Gaya to New Delhi. The BJP MP said the railway minister assured him that he would consider his demands sympathetically. JD(U) national executive president and MP Sanjay Kumar Jha also wrote a letter to the minister requesting an increase in the number of special trains to Bihar during the festival season. Singh, in the letter submitted to the minister, stated that more than 5 lakh migrant workers from Bihar live in Surat city of Gujarat. They want to return home on festivals and other occasions. But due to the absence of any direct train from Gaya to Surat, they have to face difficulties. Singh also said Gaya is a major religious place where lakhs of devotees from all over the country reach to perform Pind daan during Pitripaksha. "A large number of devotees also come there from Gujarat. So, a direct train will benefit both the migrants and the devotees," he said. Singh also mentioned that the Udhna-Danapur Express operates only twice a week. He specifically requested that a Vande Bharat sleeper train should also have a stop at Anugrah Narayan Road (Aurangabad) station, so that the officials and employees of NTPC and the railways can also travel conveniently to Delhi.
