PGA Tour officials concerned after Rory McIlroy opts to skip opening round of FedEx Cup playoffs
The quadruple points on offer through the first two events offer players the chance to quickly climb the rankings. But McIlroy, who is currently second in the FedEx Cup standings behind Scottie Scheffler after winning the Masters and the Players this year, is already assured of a place in the top 30 and so has chosen to rest rather than take part in the opening tournament.
McIlroy's decision comes after the PGA Tour removed the much-maligned 'starting strokes' from the Tour Championship, in which the top ranked players were rewarded by starting the tournament several shots under par. This season, all 30 players will start the finale on level par, removing any incentive for McIlroy to play in the opening playoff round beyond the financial rewards – there is around £2.7m up for the winner – and the five-time major winner is doing OK in that regard.
McIlroy signalled his intentions a year ago, as soon as starting strokes were set to be abolished, saying he doesn't get on well with TPC Southwind.
But Peter Malnati, a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, said he was 'very concerned' by McIlroy's decision to skip the event, which means the FedEx Cup playoffs begin without one of the game's biggest stars when the remaining field of 69 players get underway on Thursday.
Asked if the Tour would look to change the rules to prevent something similar happening in the future, Malnati added: 'I think there is stuff in the works and I'll leave it at that.'
Fellow player director Webb Simpson empathised with McIlroy's decision, having done something similar in 2020 when he chose to sit out the second round in order to rest for the Tour Championship.
'I think it's too hard of a thing to make guys have to play, we're still a sport where you can play when you want to play,' Simpson said. 'I knew I couldn't fall more than one spot and I thought losing one stroke at East Lake was worth a week of rest because I was toast. I don't know Rory's reason but I totally get it. It's a hard thing to fix.'

August 6 - Scottie Scheffler is ready to put his victory at the Open Championship in the rearview mirror when he tees off on Thursday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Scheffler, the World's No. 1 golfer, captured his fourth major with a four-stroke victory on July 20 at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland. The best golfer in the world since 2022, Scheffler notched his 17th career PGA Tour victory and his fourth since May, a run that included the PGA Championship. So, what's Scheffler been doing in the meantime? "Went home not shortly after, and then got some rest," Scheffler said. "I took a little bit of extra time resting. I think just because playing major championships takes a lot out of you, so it was nice to get home and get a little bit of extra rest." Hopefully for Scheffler's sake, the break in his schedule doesn't create an issue with his results. He has recorded 11 consecutive top-10 finishes heading into the playoff opener in Memphis. "Well, I think it all comes down to the preparation and showing up ready to play," he said. "Like I said, at this point in the year, that extra practice is maybe only going to be draining for me a little bit, and that's something that I've learned to manage as my career has gone on. I would say my prep week last week definitely looked a bit different than it would have looked before the Scottish Open and definitely looked a little bit different than it would have looked if you go back to the beginning of the year when I was coming off injury. So making sure I'm rested, ready to play. "My game is in a good spot, and I feel like some extra practice at this point in the year can almost be detrimental in terms of just physical and mental fatigue. Showing up like you're ready to play." Scheffler, 29, also has showed up on the big screen with a light-hearted cameo in "Happy Gilmore 2." The golfer even finds himself in trouble with the law, resulting in the police hauling him away. "Oh, no. Not again," he says in the movie. All jokes aside, Scheffler said he really enjoyed his time in that environment. "I mean, being able to film a movie was really fun," he said. "They got a great turnout from current players and past players. I think it's just because the first movie was so iconic and Adam Sandler is such an iconic actor and a guy that was a real treat to be able to work with. I had a ton of fun being able to film it. "The reviews for the movie so far have been great. I really enjoyed watching it. I thought they did a great job with the script and the golfers did a great job acting. Justin Thomas 'rested and refreshed' for start of playoffs
August 6 - Justin Thomas thinks he has had a nice season. He knows how to erase all doubts. "I definitely know three ways I could make it a lot happier and feel a lot better about it," he said Wednesday in Memphis as he prepares for the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events this week. Thomas arrived at TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship ranked No. 6 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 4 in the world rankings. "I'm definitely not going to make any judgments or assess anything for the time being with three big events left and three tournaments I feel like I could have a good chance to go out and try to win and put myself in contention," he said. "That's the goal, just to try to do that each week. I'm teeing it up these next three, and hopefully we can try to get a couple of them and ultimately the FedEx Cup. "It's hard to say right now but ask me again in three weeks hopefully." Thomas, 32, won his 16th career PGA Tour title at the RBC Heritage in April and also has runner-up finishes this year at The American Express in January, the Valspar Championship in March and the Truist Championship in May. He has not played since finishing T34 at The Open Championship in Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, a nice bounce back after missing the cuts at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. "It was just nice to honestly take some time away, just relax a little bit, not do much and get back into it," Thomas said of the past couple of weeks. "I think at least for me, the time off is nice to where I'm excited to go out to the course and practice and feel like I'm getting ready for something again because if not it can become a little -- some days wake up and maybe not quite as motivated or excited as others. "Honestly, just happy to be here and rested and refreshed." Thomas finished T30 in Memphis last year, 12 shots behind winner Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. After playing the back nine on Wednesday morning, Thomas said he was impressed with the recent changes and updates made to the course. "The course looks awesome," he said. "Obviously having been closed with the changes and no play, it's in unbelievable shape. The fairways are so perfect. The greens are brand new. They're firm but they're some of the best surfaces that we'll ever putt on." Thomas said he wants to finish strong and earn his place on captain Keegan Bradley's U.S. Ryder Cup team for September showdown at New York's Bethpage Black. "I want to be in that top six," he said.
