I worked with a Rangers manager who infamously only had Plan A but I sense something different in Russell Martin

The Ibrox faithful were left struggling to mind their Ps and Qs 10 years ago
Cammy Bell played under a Rangers manager whose insistence on perfecting Plan A eventually spelled trouble at Ibrox.
But he believes Russell Martin has realised he'll have to switch schemes if he's to avoid being branded another B-list boss.

The former Ibrox keeper saw how Mark Warburton's refusal to budge from his strict passing philosophies eventually allowed teams to work out his tactics.

While the Londoner enjoyed success in his first campaign in Glasgow, it didn't last.
He famously claimed his 'Plan B was to do Plan A better'.
But in the end, the Ibrox faithful were left struggling to mind their Ps and Qs as his team became bogged down in a aimless succession of passes, all the while Brendan Rodgers ' Celtic Invincibles were disappearing off over the horizon.
The complaints aimed at Warbs were similar to the criticism Martin had to deal with last term as his Southampton team's insistence on playing out from the defence backfired among the merciless big beasts of the Premier League.
It proved to be a chastening experience for the new Gers gaffer, who lasted less than six months before being axed.
But Bell believes he'll have taken a valuable lesson from that experience as he now sets his targets on making Rangers Scotland's A-team once more.

'Listen, that was a clear message from Mark Warburton - 'do Plan A better',' recalled Bell. 'We worked on it relentlessly and training every single day was geared towards the way he wanted us to play on a Saturday.
'But when you look at the opposition that you play these days using different formations, different styles, who play at different levels in Europe and also domestically, Rangers will need to have a plan B.
'You can't always rely on plan A working.

'Sometimes things can go against you - you have a man sent off, a refereeing decision. Sometimes plan A doesn't work out the way you think it's going to.
'So you've always got to be able to adapt within games and certainly when I look across the continent, the best managers always adapt during the game if they need to.
'Yes, in an ideal world we'd love plan A to work and it to be the one that gets you over the line and wins you that game of football.

'But I think Russell Martin will certainly come with an idea of a plan B because when you face the likes of Celtic in an Old Firm game, you have to have a plan B.'
That's now how Warburton saw it - but his players certainly did.
Bell said: 'Yes, there were times certainly during my time when we sat in the changing room and thought teams had figured this out. They knew how to play against us and we were making it easy for them.

'And that's why, again, I reflect back to the need to have a different game plan, to be able to adjust and adapt.
'Listen, there's times when the boys will have to start taking responsibility on the pitch.
'Yes, you've got your plan A but if you see the ball over the top to your striker making that run, are you allowed to play that?

'I feel as if Russell Martin's got that adaptability in his management as well, to allow his players the freedom to express themselves.
'He wants them to go on the pitch, play attacking football, problem solve. Again, I think that's the best managers, they allow their players, if they're good enough, to go and do it and go and make the game happen for them.
Martin got his first taste of what he can expect if things go wrong this season.

Sunday's kick-about with Club Brugge may have been his side's first pre-season friendly, but that didn't stop the impatient Ibrox faithful from BOOING his team off at half-time as they went in 2-0 down.
Gers recovered to claim a decent draw against the Belgian giants and Martin will now hope to iron out the creases highlighted at the weekend during this week's training camp in St George's Park in Burton.
But Bell reckons the manager might have to protect his players going forward if he is to shield them from the flak that comes while they figure out his new style of play.

He said: 'I think he will take it on his shoulders. He explained the style of football that he plays. We all understand it.
'It's in tight areas. He knows that players are going to be uncomfortable in some areas of taking the ball and retaining possession. But again, that's the whole training part.
'It's adapting to these small, tight areas and finding solutions. But I think he's got to. The manager always takes the responsibility of the style that they play and the way that they go about their business.

'Rangers is all about results. We know that. We know it's about winning for Rangers.
'Russell Martin's got a big job ahead of himself. He's got a huge task ahead of himself. We're getting these players ready for the start of the season.
'But I'm pretty sure he believes that he can do it.'

It's early days, but Bell is encouraged by what he's seen from the new-look Gers and the small soundbites he's heard from Martin.
Bell added: 'Russell knows he's got a lot to prove to the fans.
'The only way he can prove to Rangers fans is by winning games of football, winning trophies. He's got that opportunity to do it now. Listen, people judge people before things actually happen.

'I don't think he should do that. I think he should love the opportunity to get behind him. He's got a big summer ahead of himself with regards to recruitment.
'Players that need to come in. Players that need to leave the club. But it's not just him.
'It's a team effort. Now you see Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell as well working behind the scenes. So there's a big effort for Rangers Football Club this summer.
'But as I say, judge Russell Martin on results.'
Cammy Bell was launching the Refugee World Cup Scotland 2025 tournament on Sunday 29 th June at Toryglen Regional Football Centre. The event celebrates the diversity of communities in Scotland through football while standing up for the rights of refugees.'

Rangers working on three transfer exits as Jack Butland 'interest' sparks 49ers warning

Russell Martin is in the midst of revamping the Ibrox squad for both the Premiership and Champions League Rangers have been warned they must keep Jack Butland this summer amid an escalating clearout of the Ibrox dressing room. ‌ Russell Martin is still looking to put his own stamp on the Glasgow giants squad after a rocky start to the Scottish Premiership campaign. ‌ Despite two draws to start the season domestically, the boss has navigated a route to the Champions League playoff round after the new Ibrox owners 49ers Enterprises bringing in nine players for the boss so far this summer. ‌ Goalkeeper Butland has been the stand-out performer in the qualification rounds despite struggling to hold down a starting spot towards the end of last season. And with the club look to cut the size of the squad, Martin and the American owners have been warned against cashing in on the England cap by Richard Foster. He told the Go Radio Football Show: "He (Butland) is OK with the ball at his feet, I think Liam (Kelly) is probably better, obviously Liam is a bit smaller - but he starts the way he does and obviously he is going to get interest. "Goalkeeper is such a specialised position that everyone is on the lookout for them. It would be devastating for Rangers if they lost him. "For Rangers to replace him, I think it would take a decent amount of money. If you suddenly lose your goalkeeper, how much work have you done in looking at another goalkeeper?" Ridvan Yilmaz has dropped out of the Ibrox picture under Martin with Besiktas president Serdal Adali revealing that the club are in talks over bringing the 24-year-old back to the club. ‌ Yilmaz arrived at Ibrox in 2022 in a £5million deal but has failed to hold down a regular starting spot in the Scottish Premiership. Yeni Acik now report that Rangers have cut the valuation of the Turkish international from £5.1million to £2.5million in the last year after Besiktas enquired about a deal last summer. A new left-back could be on the agenda before the window closes with Palmeiras in negotiations to sign Jefte for as much as €6million (£5.1million). UOL claim that the the left-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Brazilian side with talks ongoing over a free to bring the 21-year-old back to his homeland. Jose Cifuentes is also reportedly in talks over another loan exit after a year on loan at Aris Saloniki. ‌ Brazilian outlet RTI Sport claim that talks over a five-month loan to Sport Club do Recife have "progressed' in the last 48 hours after an option to buy was placed in the agreement. ‘Disgusted' Tottenham release statement condemning ‘abhorrent' racist abuse towards Mathys Tel after penalty miss

Having led 2-0, Spurs went on to lose the final to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shoot-out, with Tel missing his mark from 12 yards. This morning, Tottenham released a statement slamming those who aimed racial abuse at the 20-year-old as "cowards". It read: "We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat. "Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views. "We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. "We stand with you, Mathys." Tel, a 79th-minute substitute for Mohammed Kudus, was one of two of Thomas Frank's players to miss from 12 yards. Micky van de Ven, who had scored the opening goal, had stepped up and missed directly before Tel in Tottenham's order of takers. Nuno Mendes ultimately sealed the tie in the Ligue 1 side's favour for them to win 4-3 and land their first-ever Super Cup title. But Frank, taking charge of his first competitive game as Spurs manager after joining from Brentford, insisted he was "proud" of his players' performance. Tottenham and PSG fans banned from buying anything but BEER ahead of Super Cup as bar leaves notes saying 'blame Uefa' He told reporters: "Very, very proud of the players, the team, the club, the fans. "I think the players gave everything against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best. "I think for 75 to 80 minutes we were perfect, almost giving nothing away.' On the shootout, Frank continued: "It's down to the smallest of margins, like the flip of a coin. "I'd like to thank all the players who stepped up, were brave and took responsibility." Spurs will kick off their Premier League campaign this Saturday at home against Burnley.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz urged to take a leaf out of Alexander Isak's book

Liverpool summer signings Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz have been told they must follow the actions of Reds transfer target Alexander Isak to make sure they can handle life the Premier League Liverpool new boys Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz have been urged to follow the lead of another potential Anfield recruit in Alexander Isak by improving their physique. The reigning Premier League champions splashed out the best part of £195million on the pair earlier this summer. ‌ The Reds signed Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June for an initial £100m plus £16m in potential add-ons. That was followed by a £79m deal to sign Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt last month. ‌ Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili are among the other high profile signings to have arrived at Liverpool as Arne Slot looks to retain the title. Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is also keen to join, despite the Magpies knocking back a £110m bid from their rivals. Isak has since reportedly told Newcastle he will never play for them again. ‌ Former Manchester United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has now claimed that Ekitike and Wirtz need to follow Isak 's lead, but in terms of bulking up, rather than causing any sort of drama on Merseyside. The ex- England international raised concerns about their slight build after watching the pair start in Liverpool's defeat on penalties to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday. Wirtz set up Ekitike for Liverpool's opening goal in the fourth minute, but Palace were unfazed and the game finished 2-2, before the Eagles went on to win 3-2 on penalties at Wembley. However, Foster believes their size could be a problem after comparing them to Isak, who he credited with working hard to boost his physical profile since arriving in the Premier League back in August 2022. Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "Sometimes I look at the physical build of players and I think Ekitike and Wirtz both look a little bit lightweight at the minute. I used to think this about Isak as well. "When he first signed for Newcastle, I used to look at him and think, 'I don't know if you're going to be able to deal with the physicality of the Premier League.' Over the last couple of years, he's really worked hard on that side of it, and he seems to have put a bit more muscle on. ‌ "He looks like he now knows how to use his body and keep players away. But just thinking about Wirtz and Ekitike, I need to see them put a little bit more muscle on before they can really hit the ground." According to Foster, Isak would therefore provide a good example for Ekitike and Wirtz to follow. The Swedish striker's potential switch to Liverpool has been one of the Premier League's longest-running sagas this summer. ‌ Despite his strong stature, Isak has been criticised for his mentality after appearing to burn his bridges on Tyneside to try and force a move. Meanwhile, Wirtz and Ekitike were spotted quickly removing their runner-up medals after Sunday's loss to Palace. The move was viewed as a clear sign of how Liverpool were deeply unhappy with losing and won't accept second best this season. ‌ Wirtz confessed upon signing for the club in June that he has only come to win the top prizes. "I would like to win everything every year," the 22-year-old said. "First of all, we have to do our work," said Wirtz, whose shirt number will be announced later in the summer. "Last season they [Liverpool] won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious." Making a similar declaration of his intentions following his own unveiling, Ekitike said: "Obviously Liverpool are already on the top, but we have still things to reach. That's why we want to be the best and need to improve every season to go and reach the success." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
