What to do in Chicago: Beyoncé, Vintage Store Day and BADBADNOTGOOD
Mayfest: The summer festival season gets underway with Lincoln Park's Mayfest. In addition to the usual music, food and fun, Mayfest will include a Spring Fine Art Mart featuring artists from across the country.
BADBADNOTGOOD: Perhaps best known for their Grammy Award-winning collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat, Toronto's BADBADNOTGOOD has sold out two shows at Thalia Hall. See them perform their 'Mid Spiral' tour with Baby Rose and Tim Zawada.
CHIRP Music Film Festival: Love CHIRP's vibe? This weekend, you can see it reflected on the big screen, in a half-dozen or so movies that make up the CHIRP Music Film Festival. The festival closes Sunday with Sam Jones's Wilco documentary, 'I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.' In the meantime, you can watch 'Save the Children,' a film documenting a 1972 Operation PUSH concert featuring Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and more; 'Angelheaded Hipster,' a documentary about T Rex frontman Marc Bolan; and 'Lifers,' which captures a Local H show at the Metro.
Chicago Humanities Festival Lincoln Park Day: Another reminder that the Chicago Humanities Festival continues to chug along, offering a thought-provoking spring lineup. On Sunday alone, you can hear from actor Leslie Odom Jr. ('Hamilton'); Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller ('Hamilton' and 'Rent'); National Book Award-winner Ibram X. Kendi on Malcolm X; New Yorker writer John Cassidy ('Capitalism and Its Critics'); poet Reginald Dwayne Betts ('Doggerel'); a conversation between cartoonist Chris Ware and writer/curator Dan Nadel about cartoonist Robert Crumb; Michigan Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson; and activists Tamika Mallory and Amanda Nguyen.
'The Antiquities': Jordan Harrison's dystopian play offers 'snapshots of the earliest days of techno-danger (such as the AOL dial-up moment) and their connection to his imagined future where humans can no longer find any purpose in their lives,' according to the Tribune review. If you prefer theater that makes you think, get to the Goodman.
Wright Plus Architectural Housewalk: This weekend, homeowners in Oak Park, Elmhurst and Oak Brook offer a glimpse of private residences designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries. See how these historic structures live on as individual homes.
Vintage Store Day: April brought us Record Store Day and Independent Bookstore Day. Now we get the inaugural Vintage Store Day, co-founded by two Chicago shops — Lost Girls and Rare Form. More than 100 stores across Illinois will join with 700 or so across the country to encourage vintage shopping. Reduce, recycle, reuse — right?
Swing Into Summer: The forecast is looking good to get outside this weekend, so consider heading to Navy Pier to try out some sports. Coaches will be available to help you hone your skills in pickleball, wiffle ball, baseball softball or golf. The Pier Park Mini Golf Course will also host competitions.
The Sugar Hole: Summer must be around the corner, because The Sugar Hole opens this weekend. Now in its second season, the Color Club's ice cream stand is one of the city's most delightful experiences. Puppets — Puddles, Moolissa or Jeremiah Carburetor — take your order. Thanks to an expanded menu, that order could now include strawberry soft serve, adult drinks or Bang Bang Pie & Biscuit hand pies. This year's opening day, May 17, will feature a parade, yoga, a puppet show and crafts.

Beyoncé Is Officially Halfway to EGOT Status
Beyoncé now has an Emmy award, on top of her 35 Grammy awards, placing her halfway to EGOT status. Named for four of the entertainment world's biggest awards, an 'EGOT' winner is an individual who has achieved the extremely rare honor of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award in competitive categories. Now, Beyoncé is en route to an EGOT after she won an Emmy for 'Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming' for the costumes on the Netflix special Beyoncé Bowl, which aired during the halftime of the NFL Christmas game between the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans. She shares the win with Shiona Turini, Erica Rice and Molly Peters, Chelsea Staebell, and Timothy White. Per NBC News, 'The award was among a handful of so-called juried Emmys announced Tuesday that are determined outside the regular voting process and given out by committees, with no official nominees. They are usually highly technical — several involve individual elements of the animation process — and rarely go to famous names.' Beyoncé is still up for two Emmy awards in the categories of Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and Outstanding Variety Special, which will be announced at the ceremony next month. While Beyoncé has never competed at the Tonys, she has been nominated for an Oscar once before, for Best Original Song for 'Be Alive' from the 2022 film King Richard, but lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas for 'No Time to Die.' The last EGOT winners to join the exclusive list were songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and singer Elton John. Beyoncé vies for artist of the year at MTV VMAs. Will she make history again?
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is in the running for artist of the year at this year's MTV's Video Music Awards, and it's a big deal. The VMAs will broadcast live from New York's UBS Arena on Sept. 7. Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga, who leads the pack with 12 total nominations, are also nominated in the prestigious category. This year is especially significant for Beyoncé, who will face off with Swift for the most ever VMA wins. Both women have a total of 30 wins and are nominated for artist of the year at the 2025 show. Last year, Swift took home seven VMAs, tying Beyoncé as the top winner. Of course, Beyoncé is already the most decorated artist in Grammys history with a total of 35 wins. Ahead of the 2025 award show, she became the leading nominee with a total of 11 nominations. Some of those included nominations in the country and American roots categories for the first time. In total, seven different songs from the album were nominated across four genres. She wound up winning album of the year for the first time for her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter." She also made history as the first Black woman to win best country album for 27-track project. "I'd like to thank all the incredible country artists that accepted this album," Beyoncé said when accepting the award. "I think sometimes genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to do what they are passionate about and to stay persistent." She also won the award for best country duo/group performance for "II Most Wanted" with Miley Cyrus at the award show. Of course, Beyoncé singer closed out her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on July 26. The concert signaled the end of her "Cowboy Carter" era — a 32-stop stadium tour that spanned the U.S. and Europe. The tour became the highest grossing country tour with over $400 million in earnings. The VMAs will air on CBS and Paramount+. Beyoncé wins first Emmy, for ‘Beyoncé Bowl' halftime show
The special Emmy is Beyoncé's first. She has been nominated for 10 others without a victory. And it takes her halfway to an EGOT with her 35 Grammys. She still needs a Tony and an Oscar to complete the quartet. The award was among a handful of so-called juried Emmys announced Tuesday that are determined outside the regular voting process and given out by committees, with no official nominees. They are usually highly technical — several involve individual elements of the animation process — and rarely go to famous names. They are announced in advance and handed out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony next month.
