'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Boldly Ends With Shortened Season 5

Geek Culture13-06-2025
The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to air, but the end is already in sight. In a surprising twist for one of the most successful and popular shows in recent years, Paramount+ confirmed that Season 5 will be its last outing, with production beginning later this year.
Instead of the usual 10 episodes, which is set to continue into the fourth season, the concluding run will be reduced to six episodes. The news comes amid cost-cutting measures at Paramount Global, following an earlier announcement to reduce its U.S.-based headcount by 15 percent. On the flip side, it's worth noting that none of the newer Star Trek entries have gotten past five seasons, which may or may not be related to Captain Kirk's talk of a five-year mission from its earliest days.
'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honour what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. 'We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.'
Taking place in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike led the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took over, the prequel series debuted in 2022 and has since been nominated for multiple awards. The upcoming third season, premiering on 17 July in the U.S., stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane, and special guest star Paul Wesley.
It won't mark the end of Star Trek 's legacy, with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy next in line to launch into space. Hailing from showrunner Noga Landau, it stars Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain who leads the Academy, and is expected to drop either this year or early 2026.
As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , both Season 4 and 5 remain undated.

'Stranger Things 5' Will Not Have Mini-Movie Episodes

Though rumours have been swirling about the length of Stranger Things Season 5's upcoming episodes and how they will have the durations of feature films, co-creator and showrunner Ross Duffer has come out to dispel the speculations. Ross Duffer at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con International for Stranger Things 2 Ross of the Duffer brothers, known for their work on projects as a pair, especially as the creators and directors of the Stranger Things series, expressed through his Instagram stories that it was 'not even close to accurate', with a screengrab of the fake graphic that had been circulating the internet. The original post had been making the rounds on X, formerly Twitter, and made the audacious claim that each episode would run above two hours on average, with the finale supposedly even hitting three hours. The graphic was even designed to look similar to Netflix's posts, thus successfully duping some fans online. Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things Season 4 The graphic's ability to fool the public was also due in part to statements by a couple of cast members who had teased long runtimes to various media outlets. Maya Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley, had stated during a podcast episode with Podcrushed that Season 5 production was like making 'basically eight movies', saying that 'the episodes are very long'. This sentiment was echoed by Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, in an interview with Collider earlier this year, where he stated that 'not every episode is like a full-blown movie, but there are definitely some episodes this year that the runtime is definitely film-length. When all that adds up, I guess they're like little micro-movies.' While details about episode length remain firmly under lock and key, Duffer has been very assertive about Season 5, alleviating concerns of spoilers via his Instagram. 'Don't worry about spoilers,' he shared in his caption accompanying the show's teaser trailer, 'this teaser pulls from every episode except 7, but it's mostly Volume One and just barely scratches the surface.' Until a new trailer drops, fans can only try their best to bide their time like Hopper in the Russian prison, as Volume One of Stranger Things Season 5 will make its Netflix debut on 26 November 2025. Star Trek Comic 'The Last Starship' Resurrects Captain James T. Kirk

Captain Kirk will no longer find himself in the grave, as he's set to return in a new Star Trek comic. The iconic character is back from the dead in Star Trek: The Last Starship , due out this September, with the modern Starfleet future serving as the new setting. Notably, this marks a departure from the usual fare, which places any story, screen, or comic before the character's death in 1994's Star Trek: Generations . Per The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming work is penned by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, who, alongside writing for Marvel, DC and other publishers, notched an Eisner nomination for their previous Star Trek title for IDW. Adrián Bonilla is onboard as illustrator. 'Forget everything you know about Star Trek. The Last Starship is a new crew, a new era, and a completely different tone; our aim is to be literary, intense, innovative, and most of all, accessible,' said Lanzing. 'We're bringing you into the Federation's darkest hour through the brilliant, noir-soaked lens of artist Adrián Bonilla with zero homework required. Longtime Trek fans will have a deep and fascinating reading experience, to be sure – this is a pivotal moment in Trek history that's never been even glimpsed before – but above all, The Last Starship is a dark and complex sci-fi you can hand to anyone,' he added. The series takes place during The Burn, a galaxy-wide disaster that caused the detonation of every active warp core and led to the near-collapse of the United Federation of Planets. Now mysteriously resurrected, Kirk will need to lead a new crew and ship to uphold Starfleet's mission of unity across the cosmos. The debut issue of Star Trek: The Last Starship launches on 24 September, featuring a primary cover by Francesco Francavilla and variants by Skyler Patridge and Michael Cho. 'The Naked Gun' Reboot Trailer Deploys Liam Neeson & Pamela Anderson For Slapstick Comedy Chaos

Paramount's The Naked Gun reboot has received its first full trailer, giving fans a better feel of the film's brand of humour as it approaches its release on 1 August 2025. Helmed by director Akiva Schaffer ( Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping , MacGruber ), the reboot stars Liam Neeson ( Taken franchise) as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. of the elite crime-fighting team Police Squad, the son of Frank Drebin, the protagonist of the franchise's past movies played by the late Leslie Nielsen. Joining him are co-stars Pamela Anderson ( Baywatch ), Paul Walter Hauser ( Cruella ), Kevin Durand ( Legion ), Danny Huston ( The Crow ), Liza Koshy ( Players ), wrestler Cody Runnels and CCH Pounder ( Orphan ). In the new Naked Gun , Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr. must lead the team to save the world while maintaining Police Squad's failing reputation. The trailer teases more slapstick humour that fans of the franchise would be familiar with, including Drebin causing more property destruction while driving, and delivering the franchise's signature deadpan jokes like misinterpreting 'manslaughter' as 'man's laughter' and adding that it 'must have been quite the joke'. The movie will also mark Neeson's first time leading a comedic movie. The star, most well-known for his overly serious roles like Brian Mills in the Taken franchise, is proving his acting chops by exploring a wider range of genres and roles, and seems to fit in comfortably as Drebin, fully committed to the film's various outrageous bits like dressing up in a full Girl Scout uniform while dispatching foes with a lollipop. The Naked Gun reboot's script is written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who previously wrote Schaffer's Emmy-winning Disney+ feature Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers , with Seth MacFarlane ( Family Guy ) and Erica Huggins ( Son of the Mask ) serving as its producers. The film is based on the classic comedy film trilogy by David Zucker( Scary Movie ) and Peter Segal ( My Spy ), beginning with the 1988 original, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! The Naked Gun will hit theatres on 1 August 2025. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 .
