Gordon relishing Motherwell's new philosophy under Berthel Askou
The Dane encourages his goalkeeper and centre-backs to build play from the back and made a marked difference to Motherwell's tactics during their Premier Sports Cup group campaign.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's William Hill Premiership opener against Rangers, central defender Gordon said: 'There's obviously different methods, but I've always backed myself to do that side of the game.
'You sometimes play in formations and under managers that don't want it, so then you obviously just need to look at the other side and do what they want.
'But this manager has obviously come in and expressed himself to us, what he wants from us and how he wants us to do it.
'I think we've got a good squad here that can take that on board and can go and produce on the pitch.
'For me it's obviously a bit different in terms of maybe a bit more possession-based stuff in the build-up and the defending side of things, but that's something that we're all relishing and something that I'm enjoying to be part of and something a wee bit different than what we've been doing recently.'
The arrival of talented ball players such as Elijah Just, Lukas Fadinger and Ibrahim Said has also given Motherwell's build-up play a different dimension in the opposition half.
'You can see some of the passages of play as we've had in the games, especially in the forward areas, it's been really good to watch,' Gordon said.
'It's been great to be a part of seeing that happening in the attacking third. Probably an area that we kind of just fell a bit short last year.
'So obviously having AP (Apostolos Stamatelopoulos) back fit, (Callum) Slattery in the form he's in and JT (Tawanda Maswanhise) as well, and then obviously new guys coming and adding to that, it's been really good.
'It's been really enjoyable but obviously the games are now coming so you need to get the results on the board as well because we all know how that goes, so hopefully it's the best of both worlds.'
Askou's early progress will be tested against a Rangers side who began life under Russell Martin with a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifiers.
Former St Johnstone captain Gordon said: 'It's a good game for us to test ourselves against the best players in the league, that's what you want. It's on the TV, you couldn't ask for much more from a player's point of view.
'But we know what Rangers are going to turn up and we know how good they are. They just came through two legs with Panathinaikos and we all know how good a team they are so it just shows you the task at hand.
'But it's one that we're not going to shy away from, it's one that we're going to step forward and we're going to really look to embrace.'

Shearer is frustrated that another marquee target looks to have passed Newcastle by as they fail to build on one of the club's great seasons. He told Betfair: "It sounds as if Benjamin Sesko had two clubs to choose from in Newcastle and Man United. One that won a trophy last year and is now playing Champions League football this season - and one that didn't win anything, finished 15th and had a dreadful season. "I understand that Man United are a huge football club, not so much a huge football team at this moment in time. I get it. I understand it. It looks as if, by all accounts, he prefers a move to Man United. It's disappointing again from Newcastle, another target it looks like they're going to miss out on and I said it about a week ago, it looks as if it's been a disastrous window for Newcastle." Howe has continued to miss out on key targets which means Newcastle have struggled to strengthen their squad ahead of their second crack at the Champions League. Antony Elanga, signed from Nottingham Forest for £55million, is their only new recruit. They've seen the likes of Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and James Trafford all head for other clubs despite Newcastle's interest being well documented. Martin's changes pay off as Gassama double eases Rangers past Viktoria Plzen
Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers defeated Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie at Ibrox. Martin hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application and the captain, James Tavernier, and the midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as the winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes before the returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored his side's third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. Martin said: 'I really enjoyed it. I'm proud of the guys. We had a really difficult evening on Saturday, just because there was not enough running in behind, aggression, intensity with the ball. We were not just ranting and raving, we showed a lot of clips and we tried to do a lot of learning in the meeting room and on the pitch in the last couple of days and they took it on brilliantly. 'The guys that came in the team were fantastic. We're going to need everyone. You don't get dropped from this team, people come in and out quite a lot because we need to be fresh.' Martin claimed Tavernier was understanding of Martin's decision to leave him on the sidelines. He said: 'Yeah, yeah, he was great – all the guys. I say my piece, if they have a piece to say, then it's really respectful and really honest. But I think the way he played when he came on showed you everything you need to know. So there's been no problem and I don't envisage there being any problems moving forward.' Rangers will be heavy favourites to progress to a playoff tie against the Austrian side RB Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium. After pointing the finger at his underperformers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably their best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut with the left-back Jefté, the midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past the goalkeeper Florian Wiegele. After the Rangers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from the visiting captain ,Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jemelka. When a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes the midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right to score his fourth goal in the past three European matches. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done before the home keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. Malmö's home match against their local rivals FC Copenhagen ended in a goalless draw. The teams are separated by the Øresund Bridge which is the fastest route between Sweden and Denmark. Anderson Silva's late goal for Pafos fired them to a 1-0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv. A first-half penalty from Toral Bayramov secured a 1-0 away win for Qarabag at the Macedonian club Shkendija.

Rangers handed Champions League warning as Club Brugge seize initiative to edge towards crunch play-off round
One goal was enough to separate Gers two potential play-off opponents Rangers have been handed a warning by Club Brugge after their potential Champions League opponents took a big step towards the play-off round with an away victory against Red Bull Salzburg. Gers have one foot in the final qualifcation hurdle after thrashing Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen 3-0 at Ibrox in the first leg of their third round qualifier showdown on Tuesday night. Summer signing Djeidi Gassama continued his fine start to life at Rangers by bagging a brace while fellow new boy Oliver Antman capping off his debut with a superb assist. Should Russell Martin 's men finish the job in Plzen next week, then they will face the winner of the tie between Brugge and Salzburg for a place amongst Europe's elite in the money-spinning league phase. And it's the Belgian side who will be favourites to set up a showdown with the Light Blues after claiming a shut-out win on away soil, The clash at the Red Bull Arena looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the visitors struck with 16 minutes remaining through Romeo Vermant's goal. Rangers know that reaching the play-off will see them host the first leg at home on August 19/20 against Brugge or Plzen, with the return match taking place on August 26/27. And ahead of the potential showdown, the Ibrox club have taken advantage of the SPFL's new scheme to help Premiership clubs trying to get into Europe. Martin's side are due to face St Mirren in Paisley on August 24 but should they get past Plzen will then have that game postponed to a later date to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. The same goes for Hibs who, if they can make it past Partizan Belgrade in the Conference League, will face Legia Warsaw or AEK Larnaca on August 21 and August 28.
