PTI moves LHC against police raids, harassment

Express Tribune31-07-2025
A senior member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Lahore High Court seeking protection for party workers and supporters allegedly facing harassment and illegal police raids ahead of the party's planned protest on August 5.
The petition, filed by PTI leader Akmal Khan, names the Inspector General of Police Punjab, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore, DIG Operations, and Station House Officers of Shahdara and Ferozwala (District Sheikhupura) as respondents. The petitioner urged the court to restrain the police from conducting raids and harassing individuals participating in or mobilizing for the upcoming protest.
In his plea, Khan argued that the Constitution grants every citizen the right to move freely, reside in any part of the country, and assemble peacefully — subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of public order.
He emphasised that the right to form and be part of a political party is also protected under the Constitution, provided it does not operate in a manner prejudicial to the sovereignty or integrity of Pakistan.
Citing Article 17 of the Constitution, the petitioner noted that any federal declaration regarding the illegality of a political party must be referred to the Supreme Court within fifteen days, and that only the court's decision in such matters is final.
He requested the Lahore High Court to issue directions to police officials to stop harassing PTI workers and refrain from conducting raids at their homes without legal justification.
The petition has been admitted for hearing, and the court is expected to issue a ruling after reviewing the stance of the concerned authorities.

Omar Ayub's bail pleas rejected in Jinnah House, Askari Tower cases

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Saturday dismissed interim bail petitions filed by senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub in three separate cases linked to the May 9 violence, citing his absence from court proceedings. The cases pertain to attacks on key state and military properties during May 9 riots, including the high-profile incidents at Lahore's Jinnah House and Askari Tower. ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul presided over the hearings and noted Ayub's failure to appear before the court as grounds for rejecting his bail pleas. A request for a one-day exemption from appearance was also denied. His non-compliance resulted in the cancellation of his bail. Last month, the Faisalabad ATC sentenced top PTI leaders, including Ayub, to up to 10 years in prison in cases related to the May 9 protests. Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul, MNA Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and former MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq were among the 108 PTI leaders convicted out of 185 individuals implicated in the cases. Ayub was stripped of his position as Leader of the Opposition, Gul lost her role as Parliamentary Leader, and Ahmad Chattha was removed as Deputy Parliamentary Leader. The May 9 protests—triggered by the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan—led to a series of violent clashes across the country, with several PTI leaders and supporters facing charges under anti-terrorism laws. The state has since moved to prosecute those involved in the attacks on military and public infrastructure.

33 terrorists killed as troops foil border breach attempt

The combo of pictures released by the military's media wing show targets hit by security forces along the Pak-Afghan border near Zhob. PHOTO: ISPR Listen to article Security forces thwarted a major infiltration attempt from Afghanistan, killing at least 33 terrorists in the Zhob district of Balochistan, the military said in a statement on Friday, adding that a "sanitisation operation" is ongoing for residual terrorist elements in the area. The movement of a sizeable group of Khwarij belonging to Indian proxy Fitna al Khwarij was detected by security forces in the Sambaza area of Zhob on the night between August 7and 8, the military's media wing, the ISPR, said in a statement. They were trying to infiltrate through the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. "Own troops effectively engaged and thwarted their attempt to infiltrate. As a result of precise, bold and skillful engagement, 33 Indian-sponsored Khwarij were sent to hell," it added. "A large cache of weapons, ammunition and explosives was also recovered." Terrorists from the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the group responsible for much of terrorist violence in the country, have officially been designated as "Fitna al Khwarij" who officials claim receive financial and material support from India's intelligence agency RAW. "A sanitisation operation is being conducted to eliminate any other Khwarij found in the area," the ISPR added. "The security forces of Pakistan remain resolute and unwavering in their commitment to defend the nation's frontiers and to eradicate the menace of Indian-sponsored terrorism from the country." Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces for successfully foiling the infiltration attempt. "The brave personnel of the security forces risked their lives to stop the terrorists and frustrate their nefarious designs," he said in a statement issued by his office. The premier emphasised the nation's support for the security forces, saying that "the entire nation stands with the security forces in their fight against terrorism." He reiterated his commitment to eliminating all forms of terrorism from the country and underscored the government's determination to maintain peace and security. The TTP and its affiliated groups had fled across the border into Afghanistan following their rout in a major military operation, codenamed Zarb-e-Azb, in the erstwhile tribal areas of Pakistan in 2014. There, they found safe havens which they have since used as launch pads for attacks inside Pakistan. In Afghanistan, the TTP developed a symbiotic relationship with other terrorist groups — particularly the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) — to step up attacks in Pakistan. Pakistani officials say they have credible evidence of tactical and strategic coordination between the BLA's lethal Majeed Brigade and the TTP. These claims were reinforced by the latest report of the UN Security Council, which explicitly states that the BLA – including its Majeed Brigade – and the TTP maintain "close coordination" in their terrorist activities. The report cites high-profile, complex attacks claimed by these groups in 2025 to illustrate the level of operational synchronisation between them. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Taliban regime to honour its commitment under the Doha Accord not to allow Afghan soil to be used by any transnational group against other countries in the region and beyond. However, the Taliban regime has been reluctant to take action against these groups, amid reports it seeks to use them as leverage in negotiations with neighbouring states.

Mercenaries' issue to be taken up with Ukraine

Foreign Office spokesperson Ambassador, Shafqat Ali Khan on Friday said Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations. The Foreign Office spokesperson addressed the weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Khan categorically rejected what he called "baseless and unfounded allegations" regarding the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the Ukraine conflict. "No verifiable evidence has been presented, nor has Pakistan been formally approached by Ukrainian authorities," he said, adding that the matter would be taken up with Kyiv to seek clarification.
