Waymo and Uber's Austin robotaxi expansion begins today
Waymo and Uber's robotaxi service is launching today in Austin, exclusively in the Uber app. The companies announced their plan to expand to Austin and Atlanta in September 2024, and Waymo raised a cool $5.6 billion in October to help pay for it.
Unlike the Waymo One service offered to riders in San Francisco and Los Angeles, interested Austin riders will get a chance to ride in a Waymo just by ordering an UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort or Uber Comfort Electric ride, similar to how things are handled in Phoenix. You're not guaranteed to receive a Waymo when you do order one of those rides, but Uber says you can increase your chances of receiving one by changing your "Ride Preferences" in the app. Upfront prices remain the same whether you get a Waymo or not, though if you do end up in a robotaxi, you won't be prompted to tip. You'll use the Uber app to unlock the Waymo, open its trunk and start your ride, too.
Uber says Waymo One will cover 37 square miles in Austin, and in a first for the company, Waymo vehicles themselves will be stored, cleaned and maintained by a third-party partner, Avomo, theoretically making the experience even more taxi-like than before.
Waymo won't be the only major self-driving shop offering rides in Austin. Tesla's robotaxi service is supposed to launch in the Texas capital in June. They're not evenly matched so far, though. In May 2024, Waymo said it makes 50,000 paid trips every week. It remains to be seen how quickly Tesla will reach the same scale. For its part, Uber has expressed interest in offering Tesla rides through its app, too, though so far the EV company is operating on its own.

Tesla Launches Killer Model Y Lease Offer For June
Tesla isn't just tweaking pricing this month-it's launching one of the most aggressive Model Y lease offers we've seen to date. If you've been eyeing Tesla's bestselling electric SUV, June might be the month to make your move. The new deals target the updated Model Y lineup, particularly the more affordable Long Range RWD and the dual-motor AWD trims. With its new lease offers, it's clear Tesla is trying to juice its summer sales (and recover from a self-imposed slump). At the entry point, the 2025 Model Y Long Range RWD now leases for just $399 a month for 36 months with $1,000 down (before taxes and fees) and a 10,000-mile-per-year limit. In states offering EV incentives-like Massachusetts, where buyers get a $3,500 rebate-that monthly payment drops to an incredibly attractive $350 a month. Prefer a shorter lease? The 24-month version is $419/month under the same terms. For those who want all-weather capability, the Long Range AWD trim also gets a price cut. It now leases for $499 a month over 36 months with $1,000 down (plus taxes and fees). A 24-month lease will cost $515 a month. These prices make the Model Y one of the best lease values in the electric SUV segment, undercutting some rivals while offering strong range and the Tesla experience. Tesla's 2025 Model Y, known internally as the "Juniper" refresh, arrives at a crucial moment for the brand. Despite global controversy surrounding the company's CEO, the car itself makes a strong case for why the Model Y continues to be one of the most important electric vehicles on the market. It's more efficient, more comfortable, better equipped, and-thanks to a handful of clever upgrades-better looking, too. The updated Model Y Dual Motor Long Range variant delivers around 370 horsepower and 363 lb-ft of torque, launching from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds. The U.S.-spec version offers an EPA-rated 327 miles of range. It still uses the same 78.1-kWh battery pack as before, but now stretches those electrons further. With features like heated and cooled front seats, a rear entertainment screen, and a thoroughly overhauled suspension tuned for comfort, the new Model Y feels more refined and luxurious, while retaining the quick steering and strong acceleration that made it such a standout to begin with. The Model Y continues to be a dominant player in the EV market, but with growing competition from legacy automakers and new startups (and Elon's antics), Tesla may be feeling pressure to keep inventory moving. The Long Range RWD version, introduced earlier this year as a more affordable alternative, gives Tesla new pricing flexibility, and the June lease deals take full advantage of that. Will Tesla roll out more deals if these expire? Probably. The brand is known for adjusting pricing frequently, and if June's offers don't bring in enough buyers, we could see further sweeteners later this summer. Don't be fooled by Android 16's release — the big changes are still coming
Android fans, it is time. After nearly seven months of developer previews and betas, the official Android 16 update is now available for the Pixel 6 and newer Pixel models. If you head to your Settings app to check for an update, you should have Android 16 waiting for you. Android 16 as a whole is shaping up to be one of the most significant Android updates we've seen in years, thanks to things like Material 3 Expressive, the redesigned quick settings layout, the new lock screen customization options, and more. Unfortunately, you won't find any of that in the official update Google started rolling out yesterday. While this Android 16 update is a critical step in getting closer to those big changes, you're going to be waiting a while longer before you can use them — even after updating to Android 16. Confused? Let me explain. The Android 16 update that's rolling out to Pixels now is that first version. While you'd expect the shift from Android 15 to Android 16 to be a dramatic one, the reality is that it's not. So, what's actually new in this Android 16 update? If so much is being withheld for Android 16 QPR1, is there anything of note in this Android 16 update? That depends on how much you like notifications. Android 16 officially adds support for Live Updates, which are essentially Google's version of Live Activities on iOS. This means apps like Uber, DoorDash, etc. will be able to display live, ongoing updates that regularly update with new info (such as when your ride is on the way, when your food is being picked up, etc.). It'll take time for developers to support the feature, but the functionality is present in Android 16. Google Another notification update is 'force-grouping.' If Android 16 detects that you've received multiple notifications from the same app, they'll automatically be grouped into a single notification card to help reduce clutter. There are some other user-facing changes in Android 16, including simpler microphone controls for people who use hearing aids and Google's new Advanced Protection feature. But that's the way the company has decided to handle things this year, and it's good to be aware of the difference between the two versions and not to go into this latest Android 16 update with the wrong expectations. If it helps, think of Android 16 as Android 15.1 or a pre-Android 16 update. There's not much new to play with or get excited about, but it's laying the groundwork for the hallmark features in Android 16 QPR1, and that's important. If you're tired of waiting and want to try Material 3 Expressive and the other significant changes right now, you can always download the Android 16 QPR1 Beta. It's pre-release software, which means it's still a bit buggy, but if you're eager to get your hands on Android 16's biggest and best updates, that is always an option.
