Germany's Berger 'living best life' after Euros shootout heroics
Berger, a two-time survivor of thyroid cancer, saved Alice Sombath's penalty to decide the shootout 6-5 in Germany's favour after a gruelling match ended 1-1 after extra time.
The 34-year-old also stopped France's first penalty from Amel Majri and kept the scores level in the first half of extra time with an astonishing stop to make sure Janina Minge didn't knock Germany out with an own goal.
"I feel like I'm not a really emotional person, I'm glad I'm here and I'm glad that I have the team I have. Obviously the time here just makes me proud to be here," Berger told reporters.
"Whatever happened in 2022 is in the past and I'm looking forward to it now, to the future. For me, now I live my best life and I'm in the semi-final."
In the last four, Germany will face world champions Spain in Zurich on Wednesday. - AFP

Scheffler leads British Open as McIlroy chases miracle comeback
WORLD number one Scottie Scheffler stands on the brink of British Open glory, carrying a commanding four-shot lead into Sunday's final round. The American star has dominated the tournament so far, leaving Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy needing a historic comeback to snatch victory on home soil. McIlroy, who thrilled crowds with a third-round 66, admitted Scheffler's form makes him the clear favourite. 'Scottie Scheffler is inevitable. Even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he's the complete player,' said the 2014 champion. 'He's just so solid. He doesn't make mistakes.' Scheffler, already a PGA Championship winner this year, has a perfect record when leading after 54 holes, having won his last nine tournaments in such positions. His closest challenger is China's Li Haotong at 10 under par, while England's Matthew Fitzpatrick sits five shots back. Despite his dominance, Scheffler downplayed the significance of his success earlier in the week. 'It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes,' he said. Yet, victory would see him join Tiger Woods as the only world number ones to win the British Open. Fitzpatrick, who played alongside Scheffler on Saturday, compared his consistency to Woods' peak. 'He's an exceptional player. He's world number one, and we're seeing Tiger-like stuff,' he said. McIlroy remains the crowd favourite, with thousands of fans hoping he can produce a Sunday charge. Starting six shots behind, the Northern Irishman faces a tough task against Scheffler's relentless precision. 'Winning major championships is not an easy task, and I've put myself in a good position,' Scheffler said. 'There's not really too much else going on.' - AFP

"Whilst every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think that it's ok to target someone's appearance or race," Carter, who is Black, posted in a lengthy Instagram statement. "I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can. "Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it." The 27-year-old has started all four of England's games at the tournament. England play Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva. "We have made historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be a part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all." FA CEO Mark Bullingham condemned the abuse. "Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs," Bullingham said in a statement. "We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism." Bullingham said the FA has been in contact with UK police, who are in touch with the relevant social media platform. "We are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice," he said. "Regrettably this is not the first time this has happened to an England player, so we had measures in place to allow us to respond quickly and where possible provide information to support any potential police action." Oliver Solberg wins first WRC rally in Estonia
SWEDEN's Oliver Solberg claimed his first-ever World Rally Championship (WRC) victory at the Rally of Estonia, marking a significant milestone in his career. The 23-year-old, son of 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg, dominated the high-speed gravel stages from Friday onwards, finishing 25.2 seconds ahead of local favourite Ott Tanak. Solberg, driving a Toyota in place of the absent eight-time champion Sebastien Ogier, showcased remarkable composure throughout the event. Reigning champion Thierry Neuville of Belgium secured third place, rounding out the podium. 'After everything, so many years trying and trying and trying and dreaming, and me and (co-driver) Elliott (Edmondson) finally made it,' an emotional Solberg said. He credited Toyota for their support, adding, 'I've never had such a good time in my life.' The victory also reshuffled the WRC standings, with Tanak overtaking Elfyn Evans to lead the championship by a single point. Evans finished sixth in Estonia, struggling to match the pace of the frontrunners. - AFP
