Former Florida EDGE Jonathan Greenard cracks NFL's top 50 players ahead of 2025-26 season

USA Today4 hours ago
The start of the 2025-26 NFL campaign is less than a month away, and things are starting to cook ahead of the nation's favorite gridiron game.
While we count down the remaining days before the opening kickoff, NFL.com's Coral Smith has been curating its rankings of the top 100 players as voted by the players themselves heading into the new season. She recently released the cohort for the No. 50 to No. 41 rankings, which saw the first former Florida Gator to be named: edge defender Jonathan Greenard of the Minnesota Vikings, who checks in at No. 48.
"Greenard signed a four-year contract to join the Vikings last offseason, putting big expectations on his shoulders to produce and aid in the pass rush out of the gate," Smith begins.
"And Greenard did just that, establishing himself quickly in the Minnesota defense as a QB-hunting threat and part of the team's turnover-happy unit. Responsible for a quartet of takeaways himself, Greenard was rewarded for his impactful performance with his first Pro Bowl nod and a few points for Defensive Player of the Year voting," she continues.
"Set to stay in Minnesota for the long term, Greenard figures to maintain his new key role in the defense going forward, especially after some significant free agency departures."
NFL Pro Insight for Jonathan Greenard
2024 stats: 17 games | 59 tackles | 18 tfl | 12 sacks | 4 FF | 1 FR
"Greenard was one of just two edge defenders in the NFL (alongside Myles Garrett) to record 50+ pressures, 10+ sacks, 25+ run stops (run tackle for a loss in EPA), and 10+ run stuffs," Smith notes.
What Vikings coaches say about Greenard
"We call him the closer," Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell told ESPN regarding Greenard during training camp. "How many times have we seen him win a one-on-one, or even with help from the back or the tight end, and he just wins and ends the drill?"
"He's worked on his pass rush," adds defensive coordinator Brian Flores. "He's worked on setting the edge in the run game. But also: How do I set somebody up? I think he's that sort of unselfish player."
What Greenard says about his progress
"It takes a lot of humility to just say, 'Hey, I'm ready to learn today,'" Greenard told ESPN. "I'm trying to learn something every single day so I can just build up on my game, so that nobody can stop me. They may know I do a certain move, but I may have added something else to the move that they've never seen before. And at that point, you're balling.
"Last year was my first year getting used to this system, so now I have a better understanding when I can be aggressive and then add on the ways I can set other people up," he notes.
"Each year, I just continue to just learn something," Greenard continued. "You might feel like you know it all every single year — until you have another year and another year under your belt. I always say it's good to be punched in the mouth at times, to make you go back to the drawing board and make you understand why you love this stuff.
"So I feel like I can take this thing as far as God will let me. I have a lot left in the tank."

49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk's Potential Return Date Revealed

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It's been nearly 300 days since San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last played a down of football. The 49ers desperately need the star wideout, who tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, back in the lineup after trading Pro Bowl WR Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders during the offseason. The rest of San Francisco's receiver corps is also banged up with Jauan Jennings battling a calf injury, Jacob Cowing a hamstring injury, and Equanimeous St. Brown placed on season-ending injured reserve with a foot injury. While Aiyuk seems to be on track with his recovery, head coach Kyle Shanahan updates reporters on Monday as to when they can expect to see the All-Pro WR back in the team's lineup. "49ers HC Kyle Shanahan estimated today to reporters that WR Brandon Aiyuk — who is recovering from a significant knee injury — could be back for Week 6," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass to score a touchdown during an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on December 3, 2023 in Philadelphia, had just 25 catches on 47 targets for 374 yards last season (he had only one game with more than five receptions and 100 or more yards), and he was on track for just 60 receptions and 908 yards had he not gotten injured — a steep decrease from his previous two breakout years when he averaged 76 catches, 1,178 yards, and 7.5 touchdowns. Aiyuk is one of many 49ers offensive skill position players including Jennings, Cowing, St. Brown, plus running backs Isaac Guerendo, Ameer Abdullah and Jordan James, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, to find himself on the team' injured list during camp. "He's definitely given himself a chance; I think Russ had a really good offseason," Shanahan said, via 49ers on SI. "We got him last year to put on our practice squad, and you could see him throughout the whole year working to get his legs back and to get back in receiver shape and be able to handle the cuts after his injuries. "I think the way he finished last year was really positive. He put the work in this offseason and I think he's back to being a really good NFL player now and fighting to make this team." Ex-NFL QB Utters Bold Take on Cowboys' Standoff With Micah Parsons

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Over the past two weeks, the biggest storyline in the NFL has been Micah Parsons' standoff with the Dallas Cowboys. In light of the latest developments, one former quarterback gave a shocking observation of the situation. Parsons has been a pillar for the Cowboys on the defensive side of the ball, developing into one of the league's top talents. Now eligible for an extension, the All-Pro linebacker is eager to lock down a new deal. Despite Parsons being such a high-level talent, Dallas has opted to drag things out like they've done in the past with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. This approach has come with some drawbacks, mainly Parsons growing more frustrated with the organization. Things reached a fever pitch earlier this month when Parsons decided to request a trade due to little to no progress being made in contract negotiations. More Photo by/Getty Images Since Parsons told the world of his trade request via a viral social media post, he remains at odds with the Cowboys. Recent reports have stated that he and owner Jerry Jones haven't spoken since he voiced his desire to be moved out of Dallas. With there being no end in sight to this standoff, Dan Orlovsky gave his thoughts on the situation during Monday's episode of ESPN's Get Up. The former NFL quarterback thinks the issues stem down to a personal level, not just business. "I don't think they like him," Orlovsky said of the Cowboys. "I don't think they like each other. I could be dead wrong...A lot of money stuff gets personal. There's something that feels like he doesn't like them, they don't like him. It is a personal dislike that isn't attached to just money. Trade request was 10 days ago and we haven't talked?" The Cowboys have made it clear that they don't want to move on from Parsons. That said, the two sides have a lot of work to do to repair things after a rocky couple of months. Parsons remains with the team, but remains limited due to a back ailment. With the start of the regular season about three weeks away, it remains unclear if the star linebacker will be on the field for Dallas in Week 1. Cam Heyward is "looking to be valued"

Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is among a group of players currently not working to full capacity as they hope to get a new contract. On Monday, Heyward explained the situation to reporters. "Looking for my contract to be addressed," Heyward said. "Honestly, looking to be valued." His current deal pays, on average, $14.5 million per year. He said that puts him at 22nd among defensive tackles, and at 36th among all defensive linemen. Heyward is actually in a three-way tie for 35th as defensive linemen go, via And that does seem light. "I know what I bring to this team, and what I'm capable of — on and off the field," Heyward said. He acknowledges that he signed a new contract last year. But he did so with a caveat. "When I signed that, I told them, you know, when I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back," Heyward said. "I think everybody giggled a little bit, but in my head, I used it as motivation." Heyward was indeed a first-team All-Pro. And he said the effort to address the contract began in late February, at the Scouting Combine. To date, a new deal hasn't been done. The Steelers open the regular season in 27 days.
