Over 50,000 applications received for admission to CM Shri Schools in Delhi

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Delhi government has received more than 50,000 applications for admission to the CM Shri Schools within a few days of its launch, an official statement said. According to the statement, the admission process for these schools began on August 15 and the overwhelming response reflects the growing trust of parents in the initiative. The Education Department data showed that 14,928 applications were received for Class 6, 15,114 for Class 7 and 20,762 for Class 8. Education Minister Ashish Sood said the government will ensure a transparent and smooth admission process. He described the response as 'a strong endorsement" to the government's efforts to provide quality education through modern infrastructure and innovative teaching methods. The government has projected CM Shri Schools as institutions equipped with state-of-the-art facilities aimed at nurturing academic growth and holistic development of students. Sood further said the large number of applications underlines the community's confidence in the government's vision to set new benchmarks in school education. Designated as 'Specified Category" institutions under Section 2 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the CM SHRI schools are aimed at creating model public schools with modern infrastructure and innovative teaching practices aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. CM Shri schools are likely to be inaugurated in September, a Delhi government official said, as preparations to operationalise the institutions gather pace. Announced earlier this year, the initiative, aims to offer high-quality, future-ready education in government schools. The CM Shri schools, modelled after the Centre's PM Shri schools, will follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and implement the National Curriculum Framework 2023. These institutions are being developed with a focus on sustainability, operating as zero-waste and solar-powered campuses, officials informed. Each school will be equipped with AI-enabled libraries, smart classrooms featuring augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) tools, smartboards, biometric attendance systems and robotics laboratories to promote innovation among students. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had allocated Rs 100 crore for the CM Shri schools in her budget speech earlier this year. BJD accuses vote discrepancies in Odisha polls, warns EC of hitting streets

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Amar Patnaik on Tuesday accused the Election Commission (EC) of ignoring serious discrepancies in votes polled and counted during last year's Odisha elections, alleging its approach was 'my way or the highway" and warning that it is ready to take to the streets. Addressing a press conference shortly after meeting EC officials, Patnaik warned that since the poll body continues to brush aside concerns and ask parties to 'go to court", the BJD will not confine itself to legal remedies and is prepared to take to the streets in protest. 'The Commission insists that whatever it is doing is right, and if anything goes wrong, they blame political parties or their booth agents," Patnaik said. 'The Election Commission takes the 'my way or highway' approach, which is unacceptable to us, and we will take to the streets of Odisha if needed," he said. The BJD said it will move the Odisha High Court after its repeated requests since December 2024 failed to yield Form 17C, the statutory record of booth-wise voting. Patnaik said the absence of this data raises questions about 'gross discrepancies" between polled and counted votes, which the Commission has so far not explained with evidence. Citing 'unusual jumps" in turnout, he pointed out that in 50 per cent of Odisha's constituencies, polling percentages rose between 15 and 30 per cent after 5 pm, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's Keonjhar seat recording a 30 per cent spike, and 10 per cent of it after 11.45 pm. Patnaik reiterated demands for a process audit of the electoral system, 100 per cent VVPAT-EVM matching and timely supply of Form 17C. He cautioned that hurried deletions during electoral roll revisions risk disenfranchising genuine voters. 'People of Odisha expect fairness and transparency. If the Election Commission continues with perfunctory replies instead of addressing discrepancies, we will not only pursue legal remedies but also take to the streets," he declared. Wang Yi to visit Pakistan from Aug 20-22 to attend strategic dialogue: China

Beijing, Aug 19 (PTI) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to Islamabad on Wednesday to attend the annual strategic dialogue to review all-weather ties, amid Pakistan's efforts to recalibrate its relationship with Beijing's strategic rival – the US. Wang will visit Pakistan from August 20-22 and hold the Sixth Round of China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue with Ishaq Dar, Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday. In Islamabad, the Foreign Office said that Wang is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Foreign Minister Dar to co-chair the sixth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue on August 21. 'The visit is part of the regular high-level exchanges between Pakistan and China to further deepen their 'All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership', reaffirm support on the issues of respective core interests, enhance economic and trade cooperation, and reaffirm their joint commitment to regional peace, development and stability," the FO said in a statement. This will be Wang's second visit to Pakistan in three years, and the latest high-level exchange between the two countries following recent bilateral meetings and visits, Mao told a media briefing in Beijing. The two sides will have in-depth communication on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest, she said. Answering a question, Mao played down recent efforts by Pakistan to improve ties with the US, especially its Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who was hosted by US President Donald Trump for a rare lunch, saying Beijing-Islamabad ironclad ties will not be affected by any third party. Last month, Munir visited China, where he met Chinese Vice President Han Zeng, Wang and top military brass, but not President Xi Jinping, unlike his predecessor Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. 'The Pakistan-US relationship is a matter between the two countries," Mao said. 'China and Pakistan are ironclad friends and all-weather strategic cooperative partners, and our bilateral relationship is not affected by any third party and does not target any third party," she said. To a question about Wang's visit to Pakistan close on the heels of his trip to India and whether he would discuss India's concerns over the border terrorism issue, Mao said both India and Pakistan are China's important neighbours. 'We are willing to enhance friendly cooperation with both countries, and hope that differences between these two countries can be properly handled," she said. Wang, who arrived in New Delhi on Monday, held talks with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar and attended the 24th round of Special Representatives boundary talks with NSA Ajit Doval on Tuesday. Asked whether it isn't a challenge to China to pursue relationships with both India and Pakistan at the same time, given the troubled history between the two countries and the current state of affairs, Mao said, 'China is willing to conduct friendly cooperation with both countries". 'As for issues between them, we hope they will find proper solutions. China stands ready to play a constructive role in light of their will," she said.
