Norton leads Junior Boks in opening U-20 rugby champs clash vs Pumas
Junior Boks coach Kevin Foote named a team bristling with power among the forwards and pace to burn in the backline for a tough opener against Los Pumitas at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (4.10pm).
In the early game on Thursday, defending champions New Zealand face Australia (kickoff 2pm).
'South Africans pride themselves on their set piece and we have worked hard on that in training,' Norton said at Tuesday''s team announcement.

'Assistant coach Johann Ackermann has come back from Japan and has been helping us in the forwards.
'We back our maul and scrum and we also have great pace in the backs.
'If the ball can get out wide, we have some dangerous players there such as Gino Cupido, who can get around people.'
The Junior Bok starting XV includes Norton, Wandile Mlaba, a member of the 2024 squad, and 2024 SA Schools and SA U-18 captain Sethu Mnebelele among the forwards.
The backs feature exciting players such as Blitzbok Cupido and Cheswill Jooste on the wings and Kyle Smith at flyhalf.
Foote said his team had a good time preparing for the opening clash in Gqeberha.
'The weather is great and our hosts have been fantastic, which has given us a lot of energy in our training,' he said.
'What stands out for me is the intent and joy of the players. The smiles on their faces tell me they are confident, excited and see this opportunity to represent our country as a huge privilege.'
Foote said eagerness and competition among squad members had made selection a tough exercise.
'Our squad selection for this first game was difficult because there are so many talented guys, which speaks volumes about our depth.
'We've decided on a more settled pack. There's only one change in the pack from our last training match against Hamiltons, with our captain Norton coming into the starting line-up after a slight injury.'
Foote said this showed the forwards had momentum and he mentioned the synergy they had shown against Hamiltons would give them a good platform upfront, while the backs also excited the coach.
'Among our backs, we have welcomed back Haashim Pead at scrumhalf with his experience. Like Riley, he also had a niggle, which was why he didn't play in the last training match.
'There's also Gino, who comes into the squad after making his Blitzbok debut recently, and JC Mars is also included.'
The team received a surprise visit from Eastern Cape premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who welcomed them to the region.
'As the Eastern Cape government and all the people of this proud province, we are honoured to host this prestigious Sanzaar event, bringing together the future stars of rugby from across the southern hemisphere to the Home of Legends,' Mabuyane said.
'This tournament is more than just rugby, it is an investment in our youth, a boost to our economy and a powerful symbol of the Eastern Cape's growing reputation as a world-class sporting destination as well as its capability to host world-class events.'

Pead won the Player of the Tournament award after the Junior Boks beat their New Zealand counterparts in the final to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012. The speedy No 9 scored six tries and assisted four during the tournament. He also surpassed France star Antoine Dupont's record for running metres by a scrumhalf at the tournament, racking up 232m from 15 carries during the pool stages. 'When I met him, I really liked how he sees the game and his hunger to evolve as a player and go to bigger heights,' Paige said, during an event hosted by Generation Schools in Cape Town on Wednesday. Pead is currently in camp with the Springboks ahead of their home Rugby Championship matches against Australia. He and fellow Junior Boks, flank Bathobele Hlekani and outside centre Cheswill Jooste, were invited to see first hand how the Boks prepare for a big tournament. Paige, who played 13 Test matches for the Springboks and played in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, says Pead's involvement in the Bok camp is massive for his development, as he will be able to see first-hand what it takes to play for the Springboks. 'I always say you learn a lot through the ears and the eyes. He is going to learn a lot from people like Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach, what they do on a day-to-day basis, what they do post training, their habits and what type of questions they ask in team meetings,' the former Bulls scrumhalf said. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus just week said Pead and other two Junior Boks have fitted in nicely. While he doesn't foresee them playing any Test matches this year, the Bok mentor is hoping that the exposure will give them the desire and hunger to improve their game and push for a senior call-up. 'The coaches will be involved in the team until 2027, so it's important for us to continue developing our depth and ensuring that we have at least three players to pick from in each position,' Erasmus said. 'We don't see the Young Guns playing Test matches this year, but exposing them to this environment and allowing them to participate in all our boardroom and field sessions is great for them to learn. 'They've fitted in well and they appear to be enjoying it, while it's also good for the more experienced players to see the talent that is coming through the ranks.' The Springboks start their Rugby Championship campaign against the Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on August 16. The Boks and Aussies will then travel to Cape Town for their second match a week later on August 23.

Neo Maema to use Bafana's Chan campaign to gain match fitness
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema has explained how he handled the time while he was not playing at the club. Maema, 29, who is part of the Bafana Bafana African Nations Championship (Chan) squad, said he managed to keep himself motivated while he struggled for game time last season. 'I make sure that whenever I get an opportunity, whether it is an international team or my club, there are no issues there.' This is the second time Maema has been called up to Chan squad having played a crucial role in the qualifiers. He said he will use the opportunity of playing in the finals in East Africa to get his match fitness back. 'It's a huge achievement for me to be here; I'm excited and it's an honour to represent the country in arguably the second-biggest tournament in Africa. I'm happy,' he said. 'It's all about trying to get a few [game] minutes and, if the chance comes, to play. Coach Molefi Ntseki allowed me to come; it was my first call-up last time and I was happy to join the team.' The Chan is being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from August 2 to 30. Maema is optimistic South Africa will do well. 'We are professionals, we don't need a lot of time, we just need cohesion between the players because we come from different teams and we just need to make sure we come together. 'Match fitness is always going to be a bit of a problem but I don't think it's something to worry about because we have a week left before our first game and we will push hard to make sure we are ready for the tournament.' Maema might also us the Chan as a last chance to try to impress Downs coach Miguekl Cardoso, with whom he fell out of favour last season. Reports are the midfielder might be on his way out of Chloorkop and a strong campaign in East Africa might sway a change in thinking from the Brazilians.

WATCH: SA U20 stars train with Springboks
In another example of some innovative thinking from Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, it was recently confirmed that three young stars had been called up to train with the senior team after their heroics at the U20 World Championship. Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste and Haashim Pead all earned the opportunity to train with the Springbok group during their two-week conditioning camp in Johannesburg, which began on Sunday 27 July. It's something that has understandably excited the South African rugby community, and a clip recently posted by SuperSport shows the three young talents getting stuck into some gym work. In the recent U20 tournament, Hlekani impressed with his powerful performances at blindside flank, Pead set the tournament alight as the standout scrumhalf, while outside back Cheswill Jooste was a constant attacking threat. Speaking about the young guns invited to train with the squad for the next two weeks, Erasmus said: 'We are tremendously proud of the Junior Springboks for winning the World Rugby U20 Championship and we were thrilled to see the talent coming through the junior ranks, so we opted to invite three of them to join us to expose them to our structures and the standards required at top international level. 'We believe this camp will benefit them significantly, and we are excited to see how they slot in and train with us. 'Unfortunately, we had to limit the size of the squad to ensure maximum outputs and more individual attention at our training sessions, so although more players could have been invited, we could only select three.'
